My mother has been a resident at Malden House since September 2015. As I live in France my sister had the traumatic experience of overseeing the transfer of our mother from her home where she had lived for two years since being unable to take care of herself in her own flat. I was so happy to hear how well the staff care for her. How they entertain the residents with games activities and garden parties. The residents are encouraged to eat together in a homely cosy dining room and how bedroom can be decorated and personalised. The staff are friendly and helpful, but never over familiar.

My mother was cared for by Malden House from March 2015 until she sadly passed away in July 2015. At all times my mother was treated with great dignity and respect by all the staff. They were very supportive to us a family through this very difficult time. During my visits I observed the staff with other residents during their activities and meal times. The staff would all be smiling and engaging with the residents. Thank you Malden House.

This Care Home creates a warm, welcoming home for the residents and the atmosphere is always happy and contented. Our Mother did not want to be in care but has a level of dementia that demanded it, the staff at the home have treated her with such respect and dignity, she is now settling in well. In my work, I visit many care homes and I have yet to visit one that rivals Malden House in it's care, comfort and support of the residents. Highly recommended.

I visited quite a few care homes and immediately felt Malden House could be the one for my Mother. It isn't like a Hotel, it doesn't have the feel of being an institution for demented residents, it just feels like home. The staff are lovely, they all seem to genuinely love the elderly. Nothing is left to chance, no one seems to be flustered and nothing is too much trouble when I visit. I always get a happy smile from whoever is around to open the door, always offered a cup of tea or coffee and made to feel welcome. My Mother is very happy, she loves her room which is small but with the help of the maintenance staff it was personalised and nothing was too much trouble, whatever I asked for was delivered. The staff seem to work as a team. The garden is lovely and well maintained and my only criticism is that the outside of the house itself could do with a bit of maintenance.

They are also imaginative with the daily activities which now include a garden club.

I feel that Malden House is welcoming and homely and it really does feel like you are entering someone's home rather than an institution. All the staff seem to enjoy their work and are friendly and extremely kind to the residents. My Mother in law who has dementia is very contented with her surroundings and is thriving on living there.

We didn't want mum to have to go into residential care, but once her health deteriorated to the point where it became inevitable, Malden House staff were extremely helpful. They managed to accommodate her at short notice, utilising a room temporarily and speeding up refurbishment work to provide a very comfortable room. Mum was treated with dignity at all times. Even though she was so ill, she formed positive relationships with members of staff, who did everything they could to make her final days as full as possible. They spent hours feeding her and brought her downstairs and even into the garden in fine weather. We were so grateful that mum was able to stay at Malden until she died. The staff couldn't do enough to care for her and support dad and the family at that difficult time.

This home has a happy environment which benefits the residents greatly. The notice board states "our residents do not live in our workplace, we work in their home." I cannot recommend this home and the staff more highly.

I visit my husband every day from his lunchtime onwards - except on the occasional day when I have to visit hospital for treatment. My poor dear husband is declining in health - his legs are getting weaker - some days now I havw to wheel him from his room to the main room in a wheelchair. When it is time for me to leave my husband he clings to me and most often cries and pleads with me to 'take him home'. Breaks my heart.

From the time my wife was admitted to Malden House March 2015 until she passed away, both myself and the family were very comforted that she was in a loving and caring home. We were kept fully informed of care plans, district nurse visits and every aspect of her care. The deterioration in her condition was handled with extreme care and love.

My mum has been at Malden House for several years in which time she has been well looked after. She suffers from dementia, so she seems to know who I am, but sometimes not, but she is always smiling and says she is very happy here.

The manager asked us in for a review of my mother-in-laws care and needs. We've done this several times before, and they have always been very kind and respectful. My husband and I try to visit as often as possible and we are always welcomed very well by whoever is working, even when they don't know us.

I find the individual carer's attitudes to my grandmother and other residents to be at all time professional but also friendly, loving and caring.
Their advice can always be called upon and the extra activities for supporting the family of those being cared for is exemplary, such as the dementia evenings which are a huge help.
The manager Aga is thorough, diligent and caring and she leads a group of staff who seem to be able to smile and work through all situations, who always have time to help, assist and advise.

My nan is very happy at the home and it gives me great comfort to know that she is being looked after by Aga and her team.

Malden House always welcome relatives to visit, whatever the time. All the staff were very patient and caring. They treated mum with dignity and respect allowing her choices of whether to join in activities or keep to herself. As her health deteriorated they kept the relatives well informed and kept updating her care plan. Last week as she neared the end they showed great care and carried out her death wishes! This sensitivity proved very helpful. Malden is a happy home well managed. Mum was very content in her last years.

The resident became very ill both physically and mentally during her 18 month stay but maintained her dignity and comfort due to the exceptional quality of care provided. Residents are treated as people rather than problems. All staff are well versed in a residents individual needs. Communication with relatives and support agencies is swift and effective. Staff are responsive to residents and relatives observations. Excellent written records are kept. Accommodation was always clean and smelled sweet. I have no criticisms to make.

Every visit the resident was clean and smartly dressed, whilst she was still able to join other residents. Once she was bedridden again she was well looked after and she was clean and comfortable. I felt quite happy the best was being done for her. The staff were always welcoming and had time to answer questions.

I have just spent a couple of days visiting a relative who is in "end of life" care at Malden House. I found her comfortable and obviously cared for. She was clean, the room was tidy and she had music playing in the background and the staff regularly tend to her care. The staff, and especially the acting manager are all helpful, caring and responsive. I am very impressed with the high level of care and attention paid to residents and visitors at Malden House. I am very grateful to all of them for the high level of care they have given to my relative. Many thanks.

Suzanne GatrellJob Title:Home ManagerJoined: 2025

Originally from Devon, I returned after spending 25 years living in Canada. A large focus of my career has been in senior operations in luxury hotels and then transitioned and trained into Social care and Retirement living sector. I love mentoring and coaching teams. I find that working with our residents and supporting their lives is very fulfilling. I am proud of each team I work with and bringing all aspects of the home together to create a wonderful home for our residents with exceptional care.

Hartford Care is a progressive company that I wanted to be part of. It holds values that resonate with me personally. I am pleased to lead the team at Maldon House which is a CQC ‘outstanding’ home. When I first came to Malden House I was met with warmth, laughter and a truly vibrant community. There are endless activities and engagement with the team is so prevalent. I have already enjoyed getting to know the residents and team. It is lovely being part of the Sidmouth Community which is very supportive of Malden House.

My name is Gabrielle, but better known as Gabby. I have worked in care since 1992 and can honestly say I have enjoyed many parts of this rewarding profession.

I have performed many roles and each one has brought different things to the table. It has meant that I have had the privilege of meeting and caring for so many people from different walks of life, different characters and different concerns.

I have worked at Malden House for thirteen years. I feel honoured that I have reached the point where I can support as Deputy Manager alongside Tabitha our Manager.

We understand what a difficult transition it is for elderly people, some with dementia to move into a care setting but this extends to the families too. We aim to support all.

I feel privileged to work in such a caring home and I feel honoured to share the experiences and lives of our ladies and gentlemen who have done so much for us and even the country as a whole.
