Mum has been made to feel very welcome since arriving very poorly from hospital. With constant care and monitoring Mum is now much more stable.

My review does not relate to Feb 23 but is an ongoing review and observations since my mum arrived here Nov 22. Every single one of you has worked so hard to make what has been a terrible tragedy in our life, so much better. Your positivity, can-do approach, warmth and welcome is just spot on. You take
pride in your surroundings and always have smiles on your faces. I recognise that this must be really hard at times, with the challenging work you are faced with. But you need to know what impact this has, not just on the residents but also the wider community and families. We chose Austin Rose for a reason; you should all be so proud. There are suggestions we have made, but communication is excellent and everything we could possibly want or ask for is not deemed a problem. I feel you work with us and listen well. We are the voice of my mum and I'm so glad that we are heard. We are treated as individuals and not part of the system, which is incredibly stuck at times. Thank you.

I feel that mom is looked after with great care and dignity. The staff are welcoming and friendly. I am always kept well-informed regarding mom's well-being. Mom is kept well entertained with the activities arranged. The live entertainment is fabulous. I feel that the selection of meals could be more
varied and tailored towards the requests of the residents and family members for their loved ones. I do see a lot of waste as not always suitable for some residents.

Lovely home, very clean, lovely staff. My mother is well looked after, she's clean, well fed, and always got different clothes on each day.

From the moment that my Dad arrived, he has been treated with kindness, care and compassion by all members of staff. He arrived in a very distressed and agitated state following an extended stay in hospital. Very quickly, he was put at ease and got to know familiar faces who have gone above and beyond
to ensure that they know and understand Dad, inside out. Dad regularly talks about how wonderful the staff are, how happy he is and he now feels at peace. The rooms are incredibly comfortable, quiet, clean and tidy, as are the communal areas. I have nothing but praise for Austin Rose and hope that my Dad is able to have his wish granted of spending his final weeks and days in a place that he feels safe.

On my father's admission, I was greeted by all staff in a polite and friendly manner. I am so far very impressed by the care my father is receiving. Staff respond to his requests really quickly and when he uses his call bell, staff attend immediately. They take care of all my dad's personal needs and
nothing seems too much trouble. The surroundings and rooms are all beautifully presented. My dad is very precious to me and I am happy to go home after my visit knowing he is looked after. Thank you Austin Rose!

Amazing, wonderful home staff from reception to management. All went the extra mile to ensure the final months of life were met with dignity, care and compassion. I have had dealings with other care homes in the past, and this one is head and shoulders above any I have come across. I would highly recommend.

My Mum was looked after at Austin Rose Care Home for nearly 10 weeks in an EAB. The Clinical Lead and her team did the most amazing job of caring for her during this time. It was the first time that Mum had managed to stay out of hospital for more than 2-3 weeks in the past year. This achievement was
due to the first-class care that was given to my Mum and also due to the fact that Austin Rose was prepared to take on full responsibility for her (when other settings would have 'passed the buck' and sent her straight to A&E). My mum became increasingly difficult to manage over this period of time, but the staff always rose to the challenge, were friendly and supportive towards her, met all of her needs and were excellent at communicating with me. I would have been more than happy for mum to have stayed here as a permanent resident, but in the end her care needs were too great. I cannot thank the Clinical Lead and her team, and the Manager of the Home enough.

My relative was very poorly and upset after moving through several hospitals when she arrived at Austin Rose Care Home. Everyone was so kind and helpful that she has gradually settled and she is so much better than she was, all thanks to their care and support. I am so grateful that she is being so

I would just like to thank the staff for the wonderful care you gave to my mother in her final days. Although she was only in your home for a few days I felt the staff were always attentive and in her final hours, they gave me and my family the comfort and space to watch her pass away with dignity.
I would strongly recommend Austin Rose to anyone who is looking for a care home.

Austin Rose Care Home is set in an idyllic location within the conurbation of the City of Birmingham, having easy access for ambulances, taxis for wheelchairs, GP services, chiropody, and other health professionals services. The home itself provides a comfortable environment for residents and visitors.
It is run with a good management team ensuring residents' care needs are diverse and delivered to a good quality level. Care plans are reviewed in consultations with relatives where appropriate. Staff undergo ongoing training. For safety and security, the home is protected by CCTV cameras.

My mom only stayed there for three days and by the third, she was at end of life. They did not read the care plan that the hospital had put in place for her which they admitted to. My mom drank the smallest amount of fluids in the three days instead of the amount the hospital stated in the care plan.
They knew mom was prone to UTI's and had had many. They did not check on my mom every half hour as they said they did with every resident. I know this because on the day they called 999 my mom's sat's and blood pressure was extremely low. Her stats on the second day was 73% and they did not send her back to the hospital (red flag). My mom was bed-bound and had dementia. She was in good health until she arrived there. They did not document notes for her so we never found out what happened on that fateful Sunday afternoon. Had a meeting with them and no answers to our findings.  Reported to CQC. After mom died we had a meeting and the manager couldn't be bothered to attend.

Marvellously friendly and helpful staff. Generally, a very happy stay only let down by the main meals - the chef seemed to be emptying the whole spice rack into the food and the meat was usually dried out and difficult to swallow. That, however, is my sole criticism.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.834)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.834) out of 10 for Austin Rose Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 40 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 39 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.834 for Austin Rose Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (404 Excellents x 5) + (48 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (3 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 463 Ratings = 4.834
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Austin Rose Care Home is based on 39 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 80 registered maximum number of service users is 16, which has been reached with 39 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
