Moderate Dementia
Someone living with our definition of "moderate dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Worsened memory problems. Not always recognising own family members and friends. Repeating the same questions over and over again
- Worsened language and communication issues, forgetting what they are saying mid-sentence. Not being able to understand what someone else is saying
- More frequent confusion, e.g. about the time of day or where they are, including their own home
- Apathy, depression and anxiety
- Believing things that aren't true (paranoia)
- Frequent hallucinations
- Lack of emotional control, quick to anger, fearfulness, sadness
- Loss of inhibition
- Difficulties sleeping or waking during the night and behaving as though it is daytime - loss of circadian rhythm.
Advanced Dementia
Someone living with our definition of "severe dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Severe memory problems. Not recognising family members and friends. Not being able to recall their own name
- Severe language and communication issues, not being able to understand what someone else is saying
- Severe confusion, e.g. about the time of day or where they are, including their own home
- Apathy, depression and anxiety
- Believing things that aren't true (paranoia)
- Frequent hallucinations
- Lack of emotional control, quick to anger, fearfulness, sadness
- Loss of inhibition
- Difficulties sleeping or waking during the night and behaving as though it is daytime - loss of circadian rhythm.
Verbally or physically aggressive behaviour
If your loved one displays this type of behaviour you may need a care home that has specially trained staff. Verbal/physical aggression is often defined:
- Consistent shouting and screaming
- Verbal abuse
- Physical abuse

Attended the home to visit my grandma for her 100th birthday celebrations. The food and celebrations put on were fantastic. The singer came and sang to grandma. All the staff were attentive and caring throughout.

My 74 years old wife has been at Langdale House for several years and suffers from Frontal Lobe Dementia which has changed her from being a caring and quiet SRN to an often angry and rude resident who can also be nasty too. Despite this, the dedicated and caring staff team at Langdale House care for her and most importantly keep her safe for us which I can't manage at home because of my own disability! All of our family are so grateful for the perseverance of the team who often manage to achieve the impossible with regard to persuading her to eat, drink, keep clean etc., even when she point blank refuses to do any of those things! Over the last year, they have managed to keep her fully vaccinated against Covid including doing her boosters when needed! They have recently managed to persuade her to agree to have her hair washed, cut and blow-dried by the visiting hairdresser even after she had originally angrily said no. They then kindly sent me a photo of her with the result!

Overall Experience
I moved my elderly mum into Langdale House in March and have to say I am very happy with the whole experience. Although she suffers from dementia and is unable to give me her views, she always appears content and well looked after. The home is always friendly and the staff very happy to stop and have a chat.

I have nothing but praise for this care home. The home itself is always clean, warm and inviting and all the staff are amazing. They all take great care of my mum who is in the late stages of dementia.

Friendly caring and professional. My dad went there on discharge from LRI for end of life care. The staff got to know him very quickly and he seemed to settle in well. I cannot fault the care given and wish to express my deep thanks.

Overall Experience
Due to covid, we have up until recently had restricted access to visiting inside the home. On our recent visits, we have been really pleased with the care and attention that our stepmother has had. She is very content and happy whenever we visit. The activity organiser has been really supportive in giving us updates and organising activities that she can engage in and benefit from.

Everyone always very friendly, chatty and cheerful. Mum always looks clean and doesn't smell. Her hair is always clean and styled. Due to COVID, we have not been inside or seen her room so cannot provide all ratings.

My father has complex needs and is very limited on communication. Langdale House go over and beyond in ensuring his quality of life is maximised. He is treated with dignity and respect at all times. I highly recommend Langdale House.

Overall Experience
During this difficult year, the only thing that has kept my family's peace of mind is that Dad is being very well cared for. For me, this is the longest time of not being to see or talk to Dad in my life. The staff are absolutely brilliant and take time to reassure me about Dad and knowing all his needs are well looked after is very reassuring. I cannot praise Langdale House enough and I have recommended them on several occasions.

Overall Experience
My husband is happy and comfortable at Langdale House. I am pleased and relieved that he ended up there after a long journey. The staff are excellent and I know he is being well cared for and given good food. The activities co-ordinator is particularly good. Before Covid, I noticed how she gave every resident time and appropriate input and during the pandemic, she has helped me to communicate with and informed me about how my husband with photos and video calls.

Langdale House has been such an excellent choice for me to look after my mum. She has spent the last 10 months of her life in the home and the level of care has been outstanding.
All the staff I dealt with have been so professional and caring. It has been so nice to see all the activities you guys have been doing with Mum all the time you were looking after her. My heartfelt thanks to you all.
