Excellent care for Auntie, just as good as it was 7 years ago when Mum was resident there. Wonderful staff, many of whom cared for both Mum and Auntie. Couldn't fault a thing.

My mum has dementia she has been living at Avonleigh Gardens for 18 months. She is always treated with respect, kindness, dignity and good humour. I do believe the staff care, it's not just a job to them. I watch them interact with mum and some of the other residents, they show interest and consideration
of their needs. It speaks volumes that there is low staff turnover.
Mum loves to join in the singing activities, making friends and visits from the memory man. There are many activities for the residents to join in. The meals are plentiful they always look and smell appetising.
The home itself is clean and comfortable with lovely gardens.
I am greatly comforted that mum is being cared for and is safe.
Reply from Natalie Ward, Area Support Manager at Avonleigh GardensThank you so much for the review. I do agree that Avonleigh staff truly do care for the residents in the home. When I visit it's like visiting a real ‘home’ and the staff and residents are like one big family. I often go into the activities which are so much fun and the staff are happy to dance around and make the residents laugh. I have also been lucky enough to sample some of the food on my visits and it really is lovely, proper home cooked food made with love. Once again thank you for spending time to write the review and I will ensure that it is shared with all the staff in the home.

I visit the home weekly for an hour each visit with my PAT dog Erica. On every occasion I have attended, I have found the home to be exceptionally clean and organised. All residents are content and the majority are excited to see Erica. It is a pleasure to attend such an outstanding residential home.
Both myself and my dog are made to feel very welcome and appreciated.
Reply from Natalie Ward, Area Support Manager at Avonleigh GardensI can’t thank you enough for the lovely review you have written about Avonleigh Gardens. So many of the residents in the home used to have animals, most of which were dogs. It's so lovely that we have you and Erica that come into the home and I know it really does make the residents smile. It's also nice to hear that you are made to feel welcome when you come into the home. I will of course share this with the staff in the home. Once again thank you for your time which we value so much.

The staff at Avonleigh are very friendly and caring providing my mum with the very best quality of care. They are very dedicated and have looked after all her needs during the last eight years. I feel that we chose well in placing mum here as the staff have continued to make her comfortable whilst maintaining
her dignity when attending to her increasing needs due to her illness. I would not hesitate in recommending Avonleigh Gardens.

Avonleigh Gardens and all its staff are amazing the care and dignity they show to my mum and the residents go above and beyond everyone is treated like extended family you're greeted by smiling carers and staff who always make you feel welcome. My mum came in having to be hoisted due to limited eyesight
and fear and weeks of not walking, all the staff worked hard and got her back on her feet and walking confidently again which took time and patience in a busy environment. My Mum thoroughly enjoys music therapy and the various activities in the week. The cook makes lovely meals that she really enjoys and the little treats between. Her room is beautiful and always spotless and her clothes always washed/ironed and organised nicely. My mum as her own appointed key worker who is lovely and this stops miscommunication. I visit my Mum regularly and see how hard everybody works to keep this a wonderful care home I leave with peace of mind knowing she is getting the best care surrounded by lovely people. Thank you.

I chose this care home for my mother as my father had been a resident at this care home some years previously. Our experiences had always been positive and it was reassuring to see that a number of staff who had cared for my father were still working at the home and remembered us. My mother is very
happy at the home, she often says how well she is looked after and we all have a very good relationship with the staff who are kind, patient and caring. Visiting is a pleasure.
Staff keep us up to date with what Mum has been up to between visits and the state of her health and well-being. She is always clean and tidy and enjoys her visits to the in-house hair salon. The entertainment programme is fun and varied and much enjoyed by the residents.
Knowing that Mum is a resident at Avonleigh gives me peace of mind. She is happy and I am happy.
Reply from Natalie Ward, Area Support Manager at Avonleigh GardensThank you so much for taking the time to write this review. I know how hard it is when a person needs to come into a care home, so reading that knowing your mum is here gave you peace of mind brought a lump to my throat. We strive to make Avonleigh a care home that really is a ‘home’; where residents can be themselves, have their own space and also have the opportunity to join in activities if they feel like it. I will look forward to sharing this lovely review with all the staff.

I have been regularly visiting my sister in the dementia unit at Avonleigh Gardens for almost a year.
Yes, I have ticked all the boxes with a high score and that's good. However, what makes all the difference to me is the staff - how they interact with each other - I'm impressed by their camaraderie,
their support of each other and have not picked up on any negativity (except maybe the "paperwork" side of their job!) To me, if the staff work well together and respect each other then that will work well for our family members who are in their care.

My Mum has been a resident of Avonleigh for over 3 years and I have always been very happy with the home. During a recent period of illness Mum was admitted to hospital and on her return to Avonleigh the entire staff team, including chefs and domestics, have delivered a first class service demonstrating
excellent care, skills and compassion. The staff team have kept me informed at all times and I would like to offer my thanks and praise for treating Mum, and our family, with love and dignity at this time. Well done to the whole team!

On visiting my father I find all the staff without exception to be caring and helpful both to my father and myself. My Mum was in Avonleigh Gardens for just over two years. The staff could not have been more caring, especially at the end to both my Mum, her family and visitors. The kitchen staff did their best to encourage her to eat and all her needs were met both socially and personally. She was happy and settled
there, which was a great relief to me. We could visit any time and made welcome, given updates by staff even before she was ill.

Avonleigh Gardens was my care home of choice for my mother, having been acquainted with the home for many years while working in NHS Primary Care. The standard of care when Mum was mobile was excellent and even more so now she is bed-ridden. She is cared for very well and everything is done to make
her as comfortable as she can be given her current situation. Skincare is exceptional.
The home now has a new and very experienced manager whom I met at an introductory meeting yesterday. Her long-term vision for the home is to make it the best it can be and I have every confidence she will achieve her goal. I know my mother is in safe, caring hands which is reassuring for me.

Staff are kind and respectful to residents but my mum was often on her own in her bedroom for long hours. She couldn't remember where other rooms were. If I took her to the lounge, there would only be 4/5 people there and no one spoke to her. She did not receive regular bathing as she refused, (it was
too much trouble for her but I think more pressure should be exerted). The day before she died, her fingernails were very long and filthy, so I cut them. My mother was totally blind and I don't think staff were used to dealing with this.
Reply from Natalie Ward, Area Support Manager at Avonleigh GardensI would like to thank you for the review for Avonleigh Gardens but I am so sorry you felt the care was only satisfactory and that it would be unlikely that you would recommend the home.
We have truly lovely memories of your Mum and she is very much missed by the staff in the home.
We are not able to force residents to take baths and showers and have to respect their choice and decision. I can see however that she was supported daily with her personal care. I'm sorry you found your Mother's nails in a terrible state. I know the staff in the home take nail care very seriously and I will be looking at this when I visit the care home.
I am also sorry that very few residents would sit and talk to your Mother. Sadly a lot of the residents have dementia and many of them do struggle to communicate well. I am pleased to see that she did seem to enjoy the church services.
I would like to thank you for the card you sent to the staff in the home in January and your lovely words have been passed to the care staff and kitchen staff.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.932)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.932) out of 10 for Avonleigh Gardens is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 36 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 36 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.932 for Avonleigh Gardens is calculated as follows: ( (402 Excellents x 5) + (23 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 428 Ratings = 4.932
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Avonleigh Gardens is based on 36 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 59 registered maximum number of service users is 11.8, which has been reached with 36 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
