Since my Aunt and her friend moved into Starr Hills two months ago their overall health and mental outlook have improved greatly. The staff have been really welcoming and friendly as well as extremely efficient in their work. The place is spotless and feels more like a friendly hotel than a care home.
Both ladies say the food is excellent and they are extremely impressed with the laundry and care service. It feels a very happy place where nothing is too much trouble.
My Aunts' friend recently had her 90th birthday and despite the fact she had been there only a few weeks the staff made a tremendous effort, giving her gifts and looking after the many visitors who turned up to see her. The many activities help my Aunt mix with others. In particular, she enjoys the religious service. She has also benefitted from help to use the computer to contact her brother in New Zealand. The residents' committee and newsletter help residents to have a say in how the home is run. Well done Starr Hills.
Reply from Annette Williams, Home Manager at Starr HillsDear Fiona, it is an absolute pleasure to have your Aunt and her friend here as part of the family. When I visited them at home they were both charming young ladies and they have settled into life at Starr Hills so well. Many thanks for your lovely comments I will share these with the staff. Kind regards, Annette.

I have nothing but high praise for every aspect of Starr Hills. All members of staff are warm, welcoming and knowledgeable and nothing is too much trouble. The interior is comfortable, stylish, clean and smells lovely. The aromas from the kitchen are also lovely and the dining room is light and welcoming.
As a visitor now, I am always made to feel welcome and refreshments are always offered. Being able to bring in my friend's little dog too is a lovely touch and is a real tonic for my friend who misses him greatly. It is also really good that apart from my friend's room, there are other places that we can sit in, the coffee bar, beautiful garden or the lounge. I also know that my friend is benefitting from the numerous activities on offer and also the chance for a bit of pampering too.
Reply from Annette Williams, Home Manager at Starr HillsDear Lynn, thank you for your lovely comments, it is a pleasure to be a part of helping your friend gain confidence to once again cope at home. I will share your comments with the staff. Kind regards, Annette.

My mum has been in Starr Hills for almost 3 years and the standard of care has been excellent. It was no surprise they recently received an Outstanding in a CQC inspection. Staff are kind and professional and carry out all necessary care with a good heart. My mum received the best of care and it became
her home from home. Her nursing needs increased and we had to move her which was devastating for me.
Reply from Annette Williams, Home Manager at Starr HillsDear Ellie - it was a pleasure looking after your Mum and although she has had to move we are very glad it is to another MHA home nearer to yourself. Thank you for your kind words we miss you all already. Kind regards Annette

We knew as soon as we visited the home to assess its suitability for our father that it was just perfect. Its bright, airy, clean, roomy, modern but homely at the same time. The staff are fantastic too. Nowhere else in the area (and we visited a few) comes even close.

The decision to move my father from living independently many miles away from Lancashire into a care home was very difficult. We visited many homes but it was not until we saw Starr Hills (recommended by friends), that we knew we had found the perfect home. There was an immediate feeling of warmth and
welcome.
The home has wide corridors and lovely homely decor. Communal areas, including a lovely coffee lounge, are comfortable and spacious.
My father is treated with dignity and respect, as an individual. The range of activities offered is exceptional, as is the involvement of residents in decision making. There are very high expectations from management and an obvious investment in staff training. Senior management is very visible and engaged in the running of the home, including meeting and getting to know all of the residents. After only two months, my father is well settled and happy - he considers Starr Hills to be his home. As relatives, we also feel well informed and welcome.
Reply from Annette Williams, Home Manager at Starr HillsThank you for recommending Starr Hills, it is an absolute pleasure to have your Father living here. He is a true gentleman and is getting involved with choosing the activities he wishes to attend. He has really settled very quickly and he also makes staff aware how happy he is at Starr Hills. Many thanks, Annette

My mother has been living at Starr Hills for four months. Following falls which led to lengthy stays in hospital, she was unable to return home to live with my father. She has blossomed under the caring attention of all the staff at Starr Hills - carers, domestic, kitchen, maintenance staff and management
and the dedicated volunteers who enhance the daily life of the home. My father has peace of mind and no anxieties for her.
Visiting Starr Hills is a pleasure. There is a welcoming atmosphere. The rooms are light and spacious and there are quiet places to sit and chat, including a lovely patio and garden.
Starr Hills sets the standard for residential care.
Reply from Annette Williams, Home Manager at Starr HillsHi, Brenda, this is just a big thank you for taking the time to review Starr Hills on carehome.co.uk. I do agree that your Mum has blossomed and it was great to see her enjoy her birthday so much. In fact, she was talking about it for ages after the event with a big smile. Also lovely to hear you feel welcomed when you visit. We do try our best to make visitors enjoy their time at Starr Hills. Once again many thanks. Annette

Friendly and approachable management when choosing a care home for my aunt. The home has a quiet and relaxed atmosphere with friendly residents. Excellent facilities above the normal i.e cafe/family room, hair salon. Quiet sitting areas, wonderful patio and garden. There are regular mini trips out and
organised activities during the day. The staff are excellent and will go out of their way to help. I am contacted by sms text messaged or phone should I be needed.

Admitting a parent to a care home is one of the hardest decisions a son or daughter will ever have to make. That agonising decision has turned into a very positive experience at Starr Hills MHA. My Dad has been treated with dignity and respect in a beautiful, spotlessly clean environment. All the
staff show commitment and humour as they give their best for the residents in their care. The food is excellent, and every day there are challenging and inspiring activities to take part in. This is also a home which gives dedicated consideration to the spiritual well-being of the residents with a wonderful chaplain and strong volunteer involvement. Over the past two years my Dad has improved physically and mentally - something I never expected to happen. I would enthusiastically recommend Starr Hills to anybody having to consider a caring home for their loved ones.

Our mother has lived at Starr Hills for over eight years. We have always been extremely satisfied with the excellent care facilities and friendliness of all the staff. In the last few month mum's mind and body have started to slow down. The excellent care has increased, the senior nursing staff are
so understanding and all the care staff willing and helpful. I tell everyone who is looking for a home for an elderly relative to look as a Methodist home. Absolutely excellent. Thank you so much.

Excellent care home! Carers are very patient and speak to residents with respect. Great attention paid to medication, flu vaccinations, hydration etc. The activities coordinator organises quizzes, trips to local coffee shop, craft sessions. She also brings in items of interest/cd's/dvd's to stimulate
conversation. Chaplin is a regular visitor and gets involved in bingo as well as providing a weekly service.

My step-gran moved into Starr Hills after the death of my step grandad, the move had been made so much easier for her by the way in which she has been welcomed by the home. She loves her carer and loves the bingo and service on the Thursday. Fantastic place!

This is a fabulous care home. My mother has been a resident for nearly two years. She has settled in very well and it has now become her 'home'. Starr Hills is very much like a 'hotel with care' and I have every confidence in all the staff and the way the home runs. I have recommended the home to many
of my friends who have elderly parents.

My Gran moved into Starrhills just before Christmas, so as you can imagine we were worried about it being too close to Christmas but we shouldn't have. The Manager and her team were brilliant and made it feel as if a weight had been lifted.
The carers have been superb and have really help my Gran
to settle in quickly. My Gran also has very poor sight which the home are managing well.
All staff are very personable and make an effort to remember relatives names which is a nice touch. The social calendar organiser does a brilliant job as my Gran needs lots of encouragement to join even more so because of her sight.

My father, now aged 90, has been at Starr Hills for 4 years and receives excellent care in pleasant surroundings. I feel that he is given as much choice and flexibility as possible, and that the care he receives has changed over time in response to his needs. Management and staff are efficient but also
friendly and caring. They greet residents by name and chat with them. Activities available include musical entertainment, games, gardening and a weekly service organised by the chaplain. Personally, I very much appreciate the fact that visitors are made welcome and are treated as part of the Starr Hills community.

Mum has been a resident at Starr Hills for roughly 18 months. I cannot compliment mums care highly enough! She is frail & deteriorating yet she is spotlessly clean & comfortable.
The home is a busy, lively & comforting place to live with caring, sensitive staff.
The food is well planned & a lovely
choice offered.
Mums room is homely, clean & very comfortable.
There are many voluntary activities on offer all week which are varied & some very original.
Visitors always receive a good welcome & security on entering is good.
Meetings with families & residents are regular & useful.

I am reassured with every visit that my mum could not be in a more caring place.

My mother has been cared for at Starr Hills for around 20 months. During this time she has had the best care possible. Every time we visit there is always something going on for the residents; Christmas fair, BBQ's,visits and talks by various interesting people, classic motor bikes and even owls. The
Chef pops in every morning to each resident to offer a choice of menus for lunch and evening meal, coffee, tea and soft drinks are served all day. Great dining facilities and a lovely tv/common room. All the rooms are clean and bright with TV's and en-suites.

The staff are always caring, kind and helpful, the management top notch and even David the maintenance man calls in to see everyone and report back on how the pet chickens in the garden are doing.

Super place, excellent care.......I can't recommend it enough.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.933)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.933) out of 10 for Starr Hills is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 25 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 25 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.933 for Starr Hills is calculated as follows: ( (278 Excellents x 5) + (20 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 298 Ratings = 4.933
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Starr Hills is based on 25 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 36 registered maximum number of service users is 7.2, which has been reached with 25 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
