Reviews

9 Beechcroft Care Home has a Review Score of 9 (8.997)

The Review Score of 9 (maximum of 10) for Beechcroft Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 24 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Beechcroft Care Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 11 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.176 for Beechcroft Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (123 Excellents x 5) + (92 Goods x 4) + (54 Satisfactorys x 3) + (10 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 279 Ratings = 4.176

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.821 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Beechcroft Care Home is based on 11 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 13.4 positive Reviews (67 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 11 Reviews ÷ 13.4 Target = 0.821

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

I would just like to congratulate the kitchen staff on Christmas Day. The dinner was 1st class and nothing was too much trouble. Well done, you're a credit to the home.

My dad has been here for three years - he is doing OK. He is well-liked and looked after.
The only problem is staffing levels, everybody is always very busy.

Clare Sheehan, Care Advisor at Beechcroft Care Home responded to this review on 13 Dec 2017:

Thank you for your review, we value all feedback received as this helps us improve our service where required. We are delighted you remain happy with the care your father receives and that you would recommend our service; our staff team works very hard to deliver good, kind care. We are currently reviewing our staffing to ensure that not only are the physical needs of our residents met, but also their emotional and recreational needs too.
Our staff work as a team and the dynamics of their skill mix and knowledge help them to support our residents. Staffing ratios are based on resident dependency which is regularly reviewed to ensure the appropriate number of staff in the home. The Home Manager operates an open door policy and would be happy to discuss any concerns you may have.

New management (manager) seems to be the most professional that has been at the home since Mum has been here and hopefully, she will make the changes that are needed, i.e. not enough staff on the floor that are needed.
All rooms need to be modernised.
A better variation on meals choice.
More stimulation is needed for residents.

A nice, clean home. Friendly and Dad seems to have settled in quickly.
Staff always pop in and say hello when they see me visiting and keep me up to date with things Dad needs.

Overall the care is good and dad is treated with dignity. Dad enjoys the food and enjoys going out when he can. He seems happy most of the time. Two points which staff and management know about are;
1, Dad walked out of the care home and staff were alerted by another resident.
2, Antibiotics that are very important for dad have still not been delivered, the prescription of these was sent to the wrong pharmacy, which tried to deliver them to dads home address. (A mix up since dad has been in respite care since end of July).

Thank you for your review, we really appreciate all feedback as it helps us to improve our service where required. We are delighted your Father is happy with the care he receives and enjoys the food. Our home is a community and we are very grateful to the Resident who alerted the care team that your Father had left the home, we will seek to ensure this does not occur again. To support this, we have reviewed our practices and would like to reassure you that access to the home is strictly monitored via a video link and all external doors have confidential key codes. The security and safety of all our Residents is of paramount importance. We have a specialist pharmacy provider who serves the Company to a high standard however unfortunately on this occasion, because your Father was undertaking a respite stay, he did not have the benefit of this overarching service. Following consultation with the GP surgery, we are confident that such an error is less likely to occur in the future. We recognise the importance of timely administration of antibiotics and as a team we value the lessons learnt from this.

This care home is trying hard to do what it is supposed to do. However, certain things let it down. Staff need to be chosen better. More experienced, mature staff would be more suitable.

Thank you for your review, we really appreciate all feedback as it helps us to improve our service where required. We agree that our staff team work hard to deliver the kindest care to all our Residents. We have a large team at Beechcroft which includes team members of all ages and backgrounds with a wide range of life and work experience. As an organisation we have policies and procedures in place regarding staff selection using job descriptions with clear competencies, interviews and competency based exercises for all roles within the home. We also plan to engage with our Residents on the interview and selection process as we believe this will ensure that they are able to make a valid contribution to the selection of the staff who will support them in the future.

I bring my neighbour to see her husband as she has no transport of her own. The staff are helpful, offer her a meal when she comes and I can help myself to tea. Her husband can be awkward at times, but the staff just take it in their stride.

Overall we have found this home to be a good care home. There are a few areas that could be improved on e.g. A drink of tea and coffee being given to the residents in the afternoon more frequently.
I have ticked satisfactory for care/support because over the two years my mum has been in the home she has had a few knocks on her legs and one at present has two large pads on and an elasticated bandage.
It is dressed frequently but I wonder if the carers need to be more careful when taking residents in and out of the wheelchair as I think this is where these wounds are from.

Katie Price, Careline Advisor at Beechcroft Care Home responded to this review on 11 Oct 2017:

Thank you for your review, we really appreciate all feedback provided as it helps us improve our service where required. A daily afternoon tea trolley offers hot and cold beverages and freshly baked goods to all bedrooms and lounges, and drinks are available on request throughout the day and night. I can confirm that all our staff have had manual handling training. Unfortunately, some prescribed medications can contribute to overall tissue fragility and may cause skin to bruise and wound easily. The home manager operates an open door policy and also holds a home surgery the first Wednesday of every month; she would welcome a meeting with you should you wish to discuss your concerns more fully.

After several issues, review meetings took place and issues are improving. The care plan has been updated. Work in progress is being monitored regularly.

Staff are kind, caring, work hard and for the most dedicated however rushed to provide support because of insufficient staffing numbers at crucial times of the day. Management is unreceptive and doesn't appear to allocate sufficient resources to meet increasing demands, leaving staff spread too thinly to carry out all tasks. Levels of care needs should be reassessed to see if all residents are suitably placed as there appears to be several with EMI needs - it is not an EMI home. Home is tired, needs rooms upgrading, carpets need replacing. Frequently smells. Facilities for residents and families - not sure how to answer as not sure what that means. Activity coordinator excellent - highly thought of by residents, very interactive with them. Have put satisfactory because there are not enough resources, including activity staffing hours to fulfil needs. Overall staff work tirelessly and are dedicated, treating residents with dignity. Care staff, domestics and kitchen staff alike under very difficult circumstances at times. My family member is happy in the home, loves the staff, is supportive of them. I see a deterioration, especially over the last six months.

HC-One, Careline Team at Beechcroft Care Home responded to this review on 21 Aug 2017:

Thank you for taking the time to complete a review. We really value the feedback provided by those who use our services.
At Beechcroft Care Home, as with all HC-One homes, the management team ensures the home is staffed in line with national guidance using a dependency tool which takes into account the number of the residents in the home and their care needs. Beechcroft is staffed in line with those guidelines.
We do appreciate that there are times when it is busier than others such as in the morning when people are getting up and the evening when people are going to bed so we continually monitor our staffing levels throughout the day and night so that when necessary we can adapt rotas in line with resident care needs. The safety and wellbeing of all our residents is paramount to us and we regularly monitor all our residents to ensure their care category is appropriate, residents are often reviewed by social workers and best interest meetings held to see if care settings are still appropriate, often nursing needs outweigh dementia needs, particularly in the early stages.
We are currently working to a programme to refurbish or repaint the bedrooms in the home which we hope will be completed within the next 6 months.
We recognise that the home had some issues earlier this year but we are confident that major improvements that have, and continue to be made, by our current management are having a positive impact on both the staff and residents within the home ensuring that we continue to deliver the kind care all our Residents deserve.

I am so pleased with the care and attention my aunt has received, the staff are so pleasant it is refreshing to go into Beechcroft you are always greeted with a smile. The care has been excellent treating people with respect and dignity, the improvement in my aunt has been amazing.

My aunt had been in hospital for about a year and her condition had deteriorated significantly. She was reluctant to eat, drink or take medication and was uncooperative with the nurses. It was clear that she was both unsettled and unhappy and lost interest in radio, TV and reading. She received little stimulation or encouragement. Within a few days of arriving at Beechcroft Care Home all of this started to change for the better! The caring and involved staff encouraged her relentlessly and absolutely nothing was too much trouble. Every situation was handled calmly and with the active participation of the staff she has now regained an amazing amount of ground. We are so happy to see the aunt we know now return to us!

My husband is currently being looked after on the nursing side of the home he's been in there since October 2015.

All the staff are all very friendly and helpful from the nurses, carers, catering, domestic and co-ordinator.

I feel I can always approach the nurses and carers if I have any problems or concerns. The carers always show a lot of care and dignity when assisting my husband. The nurses are always there if I need to talk or I am feeling upset when my husband is not having a good day.

I was placed in Beechcroft Care Home in September 2015 after having had a triple by-pass. I found the care I received excellent, I was in a pretty sore and emotional state after major surgery and welcomed the care and kindness I was shown. I was transferred to the residential part in October 2015. Once again I was very happy to be placed there temporary as I couldn't return to my own property. Awaiting a place in a nearby sheltered accommodation, I moved in, in January and can honestly say I was a bit reluctant to move as I had received such care and kindness. However I need to gain my "independence" but would gladly go back if I had to.

My mum has been in three respite homes, and has never settled, neither have I as mums carer. Mum has been here nearly five weeks and the change in her is amazing. The staff in the home are absolutely wonderful, they are kind, cheerful, sensitive and they give 100% to their job. The home in itself is spotless, and the atmosphere is friendly and there is always something going on for the residents. Beechcroft nursing home has given their all to make my mum feel at home.

On 17th November 2014 and received excellent care from all the staff for the last days off his life, my family and I are grateful for all the care they gave. He finally left us on 6th December. Thanks to all the staff he went peacefully with all his family around and his pet bobby by his side. Thank you to you all .
