The first thing that strikes is the bright roomy pleasant entrance hall, and all the rest of the home is clean and comfortable. The carers are willing to do whatever they can but the shortage of staff means that they are often stretched beyond their limit. They are pleasant, caring and will do whatever
they can to help. I was on the first floor and the kitchen facilities there are awful. The worktop space is minute and I don't know how the staff cope with dishing food out. There is no boiler provided for tea making. For a residential home, there are several dementia residents and some in bed needing more attention.

My father, who was 95 when admitted, has been a resident at The Hawthornes since December 2017 and he was very weak weighing only 9st 6lbs, having just come out of hospital after several falls, which to a family was very worrying not being able to leave him for any length of time.
His appearance was
that of a 95 year, old very frail and not looking forward to going in a home.
This month, only 9 months later, I’m glad to say he’s now 10st 7lbs and looking like an 80-year-old.
All this transformation brought about in no small part by the carers at this quite magnificent home.
Although he is chair bound, this doesn’t stop him from going downstairs to see the singers or take part in activities of which there are many.
Also, due to daily baths or bathroom care, he’s a different person enjoying monthly haircuts and visits from the opticians. He now rarely has to see a doctor and is now looking forward to Xmas 2018 and in January he’ll be 97 so to all at The Hawthornes, pat yourself on the back well done.

Always a very welcoming feel when visiting. Very clean, warm and tastefully decorated rooms and other areas. Residents seem happy, well cared for and have many activities during the week to occupy them.
Staff are very approachable, helpful and always seem to be very busy attending to residents needs.
My mother in law seems to be much happier and far better cared for since moving here, compared to her latter years spent living alone with only daily carers popping in for short periods.
Reply from Heather Middleton, Home Manager at The HawthornesMany thanks for taking the time to write a positive review for The Hawthornes, all feedback is much appreciated and I will certainly pass your comments on to the team. I am pleased to read that your mother in law is much happier since moving into her new home, we try and provide the best care possible for all of our residents and help them settle in as best we can.

My mum has been in the home since March 2017, in my opinion, she has been treated very well. The staff always appear to be helpful and treat mum with respect and dignity. I think the staff show great patience in treating the residents in a good manner, not something I am sure I could do it is a vocation
to work in this environment.
Reply from Heather Middleton, Home Manager at The HawthornesMany thanks for your review of The Hawthornes. I am so pleased to hear you feel your Mum has been treated well in the home. Our staff do work hard to maintain a high standard of care and it is lovely to know this has been noted. Kind regards’

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.416)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.416) out of 10 for The Hawthornes is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 29 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 27 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.416 for The Hawthornes is calculated as follows: ( (222 Excellents x 5) + (74 Goods x 4) + (19 Satisfactorys x 3) + (10 Poors x 2) + (14 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 339 Ratings = 4.416
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Hawthornes is based on 27 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8, which has been reached with 27 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2020

I have over 30yrs experience in Social care with the last 17 years as a registered manager.

I achieved the Registered manager's award, NVQ level 2
I have previously held the positions of Deputy manager and Care assistant.

I am continually working to improve standards and aim to achieve a better CQC rating for our home, additionally, I aim to build on our community presence and increase our reputation and recommendations.

I have worked in care since I was 17 years old and have seen so many changes over the years but the only thing that has not changed is to believe to treat people with dignity, respect and compassion. This includes Residents, staff, families and friends, I have an open and transparent relationship with all, and my door is always open. I mentor my staff to listen to our residents so we can engage them and help give them the best.

I love to spend my spare time with my Granddaughter, I like reading, cooking and the odd shopping trip.
