Overall Experience

My father spent just over three months at Westcombe Park. It was a happy stay for him. The staff were always very cheerful and caring and always had time to have a few words for him in addition to their normal duties. They went to a lot of trouble to make sure he got the food he liked and actually put on some weight! All in all, I would recommend the home to anyone and would be happy to live there myself.

Westcombe Park looked after my mother for her last 18 months. The staff made efforts to help her settle, get to know her and respond to her needs. I would particularly commend the key individual staff. The home is welcoming and comfortable, with a good atmosphere. My mother was safe and cared for with respect and understanding, and our family was supported. Thank you.

My mother, who has been a resident since March, passed in October. Her death was unexpected, the staff were very caring and compassionate, giving my husband I all the support we needed. I cannot praise the home and it's staff enough for the way they have looked after my Mum this year. Thank you.

Generally good. Sometimes when my Mum buzzes to use the commode, she can be waiting for quite a while. I understand there may be an emergency but sometimes it is unacceptable. She may have had a fall. There are no more outings, seaside, park. Last time I got a day off work to help only for the trip to be cancelled - shame!

Staff are caring and attentive. However, the number of carers i.e. staffing levels are not high enough to meet the service user's needs fully.

My sister came here for end of life care. She has actually improved and is no longer end of life. She is likely to move back into community. The support, nursing care she has received here has been exceptional. They have supported her emotional and physical health exceptionally well. As for her sister, they have also supported me in every way through this difficult time.

Caring staff are generally great. Night staff are not as good as day staff.

Activities are good, sometimes could be a bit more stimulating and interesting. The main organiser is fantastic.

Management is frustratingly poor. Getting information is very difficult, as is getting things done. Helpful staff seem to be battling poor systems, and things agreed to be done are not done.

Always short staffed especially at night time.
Language barrier with some staff.
Staff spend all their time in meeting and updating files rather than caring for resident's needs.

I am advised by doctors to have 2 carers to assist movement from the wheelchair - always only one carer putting more strain on my body.

Almost all of the staff are friendly and amenable.
My mum has been here for a few years so she knows most of the staff.
The food is not very good, but the warmth and caring nature of the staff more than makes up for it.

Whenever she has had to stay in the hospital, the staff always seem very happy to have her back.

Westcombe Park Care Home has provided excellent support for my mother in respect of daily care, standard of facilities and provision of food.
The atmosphere is caring and friendly, encouraging residents to mix and socialise.

Good home mostly. Food not always good, menu done sometimes and not others, residents request some items on menu but sometimes not given.
Happy with treatment from staff, not always fully staffed which is a problem if one resident needs more support.
Afternoon tea/coffee, cake/biscuits not always provided and sometimes too near supper time.

Too many carers left in the last few months.

My husband seems to have settled into his life here quite well, though I don't know if he realises, whereabouts he is.
The staff all seem to be well trained, capable and friendly.

His room is "so-so", carpet could do with either changing or given a deep clean.

The Bupa care home building is of a good standard and welcoming. However, the carpet may need cleaning more frequently due to spills/accidents etc. In places stains/smells from carpet.
Care/support: There needs to be a named person who takes responsibility for residents. Each day all staff on duty need to update and read patient/residents notes.
More physio needed and activities for those who do not go downstairs.

Food: In a diverse age, all residents "food needs" should be met. This needs to be worked on.

Mum has been here for almost a year now. Initially, she was in her room a lot (20 hours out of 24) however, since the new manager arrived he has made lots of positive changes and there's a lot more going on in the lounge for all the residents to participate in. The staff are all very kind and friendly and dedicated to their jobs. Mum is happy and feels safe here.

Very good staff. Not enough carers per floor, therefore, carers are rushed and cannot perform their best. The nurses are also rushed since they often work 2 floors instead of one.
