Abbotsleigh Mews is a purpose-built care home, welcoming those in need of nursing, residential and dementia care.
Short stay, convalescence and palliative care also available.

The home is arranged into different houses for different types of care and is surrounded by beautiful landscaped grounds. Residents also have a choice of lounge and dining areas, a sensory room and activities rooms.

Registered nurses and well-trained care assistants know that it's important to create a friendly atmosphere at the home, giving all residents as much independence as possible, while also making sure that they have all the care and help they require.

Residents are served nutritious meals that are tailored to individual diet plans. Afternoon tea and fresh fruit platters are popular, as are homemade cakes.

A versatile activities programme aims to help residents maintain their independence as long as possible. Residents can enjoy a wide range of hobbies, coffee mornings, outings, music and other games, arts and crafts as well as weekly visits from the neighbouring nursery and part of an ongoing initiative to help bring old and young people together.

I leave this review on behalf of all of my mother-in-law's family. My mother-in-law was transferred to the MacMillan Unit at Abbotsleigh Mews Care Home for end-of-life care, sadly she was only there 2 days before she passed. But in that time she received more compassion, dignity and care than she had
from the hospital she was transferred from. Our only regret is that we could not of gotten her transferred sooner so she could have witnessed for herself and appreciated the outstanding care of the staff involved in looking after her. They constantly ensured she was clean, comfortable and without pain. As a family, we could ask no more. Thank you.
Reply from Rebecca Kellegher, Customer Service Adviser at Abbotsleigh Mews Care HomeThank you you taking the time to leave us your comments and we are saddened to hear about your loss. We are glad to have helped you and your family through such a difficult time and we hope you will go away from this feeling like your mother-in-law received the best possible care.

My dad has only been in this care home for just over a week. The dedication, care and love that he has received from the floor staff are second to none. It has made Dad's transition from hospital to care home very smooth. A huge smile has returned to my dad's face, which is something that I thought
had disappeared.
Dad, being hard of hearing and only having a peripheral vision, has obviously come with its difficulties with communication. This does not stop the team from getting down to his level of having a chat, rubbing his hand and making him feel included.
I cannot rate the management section as I have not had the opportunity to meet with them. This is something that may happen in the future as it is still early days.
Reply from David Mclean, Customer Service Adviser at Abbotsleigh Mews Care HomeThank you for your lovely review. We hope Abbotsleigh Mews Care Home did everything possible to make the transition as easy as possible. It is always nice to hear words like “the dedication, love and care that he has received from the floor staff are second to none”, being used to describe our care. We hope to continue providing your loved one with the best possible care and please let us know if there is anything we can do to make his stay as comfortable as possible.

All staff (including managers) on the Macmillan unit are friendly, enthusiastic and positive. They have an excellent understanding of each resident's individual needs and are prepared to go the extra mile to meet these. The staff provide residents with a wide range of activities and are very approachable
and readily available to answer and address any concerns and queries. I would like to see more of the managers at the care home as a whole more often around the home.

My mother was a resident for 8 months with Dementia. Her care was above and beyond all we could expect from looking after her. She was happy with her new family and always looked very smart and clean. We thank all the staff at Calvin House and will miss seeing them all, always with a warm welcome when
we arrived.

The staff are dedicated, kind and caring and have made a difficult circumstance much more bearable. I feel confident in leaving my mother in their good care which takes away some of the pressure from me. I feel that the staff have made an effort to get to know my mother as a person, not just an older

The care and respect my mum received was second to none. She was so loved by all of the staff and was happy. My mum sadly died of Alzheimer's and as a family, we could not of wished for a better home for her to stay in. Staff have a real compassion and are working at Abbotsleigh Mews Care Home because
they love their jobs. Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff. Mum was so cared for. Thank you to all the staff.

My cousin was moved from a spell in hospital to Abbotsleigh Mews when her residential care home refused to take her back. I was concerned because she had settled in her previous home after returning from Spain. She has not been in the new home for one week and is much happier, the staff are so kind.
The atmosphere is very welcoming and it feels just like being with friends and family. Wish I had chosen this home before!

Like all care homes, I feel it is understaffed and residents need more conversation, stimulation and attention. Having said that, all the staff are beyond compare and are really caring and do their very best, they are all extremely hard working. However, I've noticed that there appears to be fewer staff
and the place can seem very empty, especially in the afternoons, with no-one around to speak to. Recent times have been very hard for all of us, I don't mean this as a criticism of the staff in any way, it's more about staff to resident ratio. I'm also finding that the phone is now answered more, when it hasn't been over this past year, which is a relief when I have concerns. I feel that something could have been done to help ensure that there would be someone around to answer the phone. I have concerns about the electric gates on entering the home, it seems to take an inordinately long time to get them mended when they go wrong, which raises safety and security issues.
Reply from Alison Horridge, Customer Advisor on behalf of the team at Abbotsleigh Mews Care HomeThank you for taking the time to leave us your comments and we’re sorry to hear that you have had a few issues. We are currently recruiting additional activities staff to ensure our residents have access to a variety of inclusive activities that are enjoyable and stimulating, according to their preferences and mobility. There are also plans to introduce hosting staff, to ensure there is someone on hand to support residents’ families and loved ones with any questions. We are also installing CCTV to help prevent any future gate problems. Hopefully these improvements will help alleviate your concerns but if there is anything else we can do, please let us know.

All staff I have had contact with especially during the covid lockdown have been caring and compassionate. Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.665)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.665) out of 10 for Abbotsleigh Mews Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 32 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 32 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.665 for Abbotsleigh Mews Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (270 Excellents x 5) + (86 Goods x 4) + (20 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 376 Ratings = 4.665
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Abbotsleigh Mews Care Home is based on 32 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 120 registered maximum number of service users is 24, which has been reached with 32 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
