Abbotsleigh Mews is a purpose-built care home, welcoming those in need of nursing, residential and dementia care.
Short stay, convalescence and palliative care also available.

The home is arranged into different houses for different types of care and is surrounded by beautiful landscaped grounds. Residents also have a choice of lounge and dining areas, a sensory room and activities rooms.

Registered nurses and well-trained care assistants know that it's important to create a friendly atmosphere at the home, giving all residents as much independence as possible, while also making sure that they have all the care and help they require.

Residents are served nutritious meals that are tailored to individual diet plans. Afternoon tea and fresh fruit platters are popular, as are homemade cakes.

A versatile activities programme aims to help residents maintain their independence as long as possible. Residents can enjoy a wide range of hobbies, coffee mornings, outings, music and other games, arts and crafts as well as weekly visits from the neighbouring nursery and part of an ongoing initiative to help bring old and young people together.

Staff pleasant, helpful, considerate - all as usual. Just a minor problem, also found sometimes before, is that my friend does not always have the daily paper she pays for, but the one from the day before and when I ask staff for help they cannot find the correct issue - this is always late afternoon
when I visit. Granted she only holds the paper without really reading it as far as we can tell nowadays, but this visitor would appreciate it for myself and to show that my friend is not being disregarded.

My Mum has Alzheimer's and we have been using Abbotsleigh Mews Care Home, Sidcup for her respite care since April 2018, using both Smythe House and more recently Calvin House. From the beginning, we have been impressed by the friendly and helpful staff in Admin and each House. Following Mum's assessment,
she spent two periods at Smythe (conventional residential) and the last one in Calvin (dementia residential). We cannot praise ALL the staff enough for the care they have given Mum, providing her with a safe and comfortable environment and us with peace of mind knowing she is being well cared for. Thank you Abbotsleigh Mews.

On behalf of my father and I, we would like to take the opportunity to express how very grateful I am for the care given to my mother. Her accommodation and the care home decor is very satisfactory.


The catering at Calvin House is of quite a high standard and the portions are always plentiful which

is reassuring.


I am very pleased to say the decoration on the unit is always well maintained and the work on the room out to the garden by the garden team is really lovely and aesthetically pleasing for residents, families and staff.

The gardens at the Centre are well maintained as is the garden at Calvin House. In the summer months mum enjoys walking through the garden looking at the various plants and flowers which she has always enjoyed throughout her life.


The staff team have always acted in a caring, sensitive and professional way and we would like them to know they are very much appreciated by all the family.

My mother moved into Abbotsleigh Mews three weeks ago. I was very impressed from the first day that I viewed the home, it is spotless, bright. The rooms are immaculate and the staff are lovely.

When it became obvious that my father was going to pass away, the home took him back from hospital and allowed him to spend his last few weeks at the home, in comfort and with dignity. My mother was thankfully moved into Abbotsleigh Mews in December 2014. From the start, we as a family knew that she was in the right place for her. She has dementia and was wheelchair bound. She has always loved people around her and the Abbotsleigh Mews staff proved to be wonderful to her. From the
general manager to the cleaning ladies she was always treated so kindly. When sadly she passed away the nurses and carers couldn't have been more supportive to myself and my husband. Doctors said that she probably not make it through the night so we started to sort out a hotel nearby, to be near, just in case. The ladies of Abbotsleigh Mews wouldn't hear of it and proceeded to give us a room for the night and fed us as well.
We couldn't praise Abbotsleigh Mews high enough. It was a terrible time for myself and my family but the generosity and care provided by the home helped us enormously. Thank you.

The staff at Abbotsleigh Mews Care Home looked after my brother. During his stay, they were all incredibly professional and made my brothers final weeks so peaceful.


Excellent care is not enough, they should be very proud of their work.

My aunt was recovering from an infection that had adversely affected her Alzheimers. The care from the staff was excellent and greatly appreciated by my aunt. She said the food was great.
The patience shown by the staff did a lot to reassure my aunt when her dementia/confusion was at it's worst.

Both my parents were in Abbotsleigh Mews (my mother still lives in the Dementia Nursing Unit). My father moved into one of their Residential Units last June and was very happy there. Unfortunately, he became ill and was admitted to hospital in February. When the doctors told us there was nothing they
could do for him, we moved him back into a nursing bed at the home. Sadly my father passed away recently but the care he received during his last few weeks was wonderful.

The staff were very supportive of both him and us family members (hugs were offered when needed) and we could not have asked for better. In the end, we were with him and the staff on duty were amazing - they supported us with information and welcome cups of tea and allowed him to have a dignified end to his 97 and a half years of good life.

This is a very well run care home. All the staff were extremely friendly and offered their time to look after the residents and their family. Everyone involved with my mother who visited this care home remarked that this was a very good care home. The accessibility being able to visit my mother at any
time except meal times was great and put me at ease. There was a high level of cleanliness. The staff are not doing an easy job and with long hours - 12-hour shifts - their approach to the job is excellent, always pleased to interact with a smile. Keep up the good work!

Carers very attentive when fully staffed. However, frequently understaffed. However, frequently understaffed!


Records last year in 2017 were not always up-to-date. However, this improved at the latter part of the year when new folders were introduced with a lot more info recorded in them.

I have occasion to visit Abbotsleigh Mews Care Home two or three times weekly in order to visit an elderly relative (Nan) 93 years of age. She has been at Smythe House for two years, during which time her general health has improved and her mental health has remained stable due to the great care and
attention she receives from the management and staff at Smythe House. She is so comfortable there, and her favourite saying is "I'm very well fed, very well watered and so very well looked after here, it's my home and I couldn't be happier". On a personal note, I have found Smythe House to be a very happy place where the residents are treated with care and dignity at all times; it's so refreshingly clean and it's a pleasure to visit this house where the visitors are treated respectfully and made welcome, it's just like one big happy family. Thank you, Abbotsleigh Mews, and thank you Smythe House for looking after and caring for our Nan so very well.

Dad has been a resident of Calvin House for the past four years. The continuity of staff has played a major part in the excellent care that he has received. Dad is always treated, with dignity and respect, as the person that he is, rather than the condition that he has. The range of activities organised,
provides regular stimulation of body and mind. Any incident, or concern for his health and wellbeing, is immediately shared and discussed with me. This gives me great peace of mind. I am always made to feel welcome when I drop by - a real home-from-home environment. Efforts are continuously made by the team to improve this homely feel; e.g. making the resident's bedroom doors look like street doors (each with an individual look). From manager to gardener, senior supervisor to cleaner - they all work as a team to maintain excellent care for the residents.

My grandmother has been resident at Abbotsleigh Mews for the past 2 years. She is happy and settled. Staff are kind, caring and treat her with dignity and respect. She is encouraged to participate in activities and staff are aware of her likes and dislikes. They are always welcoming to relatives and
involve us in decisions concerning my grandmother's care. I can relax knowing that she is in good hands.

My mother receives the most wonderful care. Staff always have time for my mother (and the other residents too!) whether it is to help her with personal care, her comfort, eating, drinking or simply a cuddle and reassurance. My mother is able to retain her independence albeit she does not have a lot
left and can choose what she does and when. The staff keep me informed of any changes in her health or well-being, and treat us like family when we visit. Cannot praise the staff highly enough.

When my uncle first came to this care home he could not feed himself, walk or make any conversation but within a few weeks, the transformation was amazing. He could drink from a cup himself, his eyes sparked again, with the help of a frame he could do small steps. The staff are all very caring and attentive
and the proof was there for us all to see.

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 120 registered maximum number of service users is 24, which has been reached with 29 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
