Someone living with our definition of "mild dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Memory problems such as misplacing items and not be able to recall recent events (however, in some forms of dementia a person's memory may be unchanged)
- Difficulties thinking through problems and planning, making decisions
- Language and communication issues such as finding it difficult to recall the appropriate word in a conversation or following a conversation
- Poor orientation, getting lost in areas previously familiar to them
- Difficulty judging distances (more falls than usual)
- Changes in their normal mood including anxiety and depression
- In certain types of dementia, personality and behaviour changes may be present alongside or instead of issues with memory or concentration.
Moderate Dementia
Someone living with our definition of "moderate dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Worsened memory problems. Not always recognising own family members and friends. Repeating the same questions over and over again
- Worsened language and communication issues, forgetting what they are saying mid-sentence. Not being able to understand what someone else is saying
- More frequent confusion, e.g. about the time of day or where they are, including their own home
- Apathy, depression and anxiety
- Believing things that aren't true (paranoia)
- Frequent hallucinations
- Lack of emotional control, quick to anger, fearfulness, sadness
- Loss of inhibition
- Difficulties sleeping or waking during the night and behaving as though it is daytime - loss of circadian rhythm.
Advanced Dementia
Someone living with our definition of "severe dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Severe memory problems. Not recognising family members and friends. Not being able to recall their own name
- Severe language and communication issues, not being able to understand what someone else is saying
- Severe confusion, e.g. about the time of day or where they are, including their own home
- Apathy, depression and anxiety
- Believing things that aren't true (paranoia)
- Frequent hallucinations
- Lack of emotional control, quick to anger, fearfulness, sadness
- Loss of inhibition
- Difficulties sleeping or waking during the night and behaving as though it is daytime - loss of circadian rhythm.
Verbally or physically aggressive behaviour
If your loved one displays this type of behaviour you may need a care home that has specially trained staff. Verbal/physical aggression is often defined:
- Consistent shouting and screaming
- Verbal abuse
- Physical abuse

Overall Experience
The resident has been at Cherry Garden Nursing Home since 11th July 19, he is always well shaven and seems well looked after. When I visit him, I do not tell him I am visiting. Sometimes his trousers have food on that he has dropped when eating but otherwise I have no problems. All staff are helpful and are doing a very difficult job, very well.

Overall Experience
I visited a friend who was in for respite care and was really impressed with the cleanliness of the home and staff were amazing. My friend was really content and settled and said how lovely the staff were.
I stayed over lunch and the patients that sat at tables for their lunches had menus on the tables with a little vase of flowers on tables, a lovely touch! Felt like being in a restaurant.
Really impressed and could certainly recommend from what I saw and felt about the home.

Overall Experience
Cherry Gardens is a well-situated care home in a nice setting near Maidenhead. My elderly mother has been a resident in the home for around 4 years.
During this time she has been treated well and the staff have managed any health issues in a competent and caring manner. The food is of good quality and close family members are offered a dinner when they visit their relative.
There are lots of events throughout the year, with special events for Christmas and other celebrations. Cherry Gardens staff are always ensuring that the residents are happy and have things to do.
In the event of a medical issue, a local doctor will attend to a patient in Cherry Gardens and if required they could be transferred to a hospital. Communication from the staff to families is very good.I only have one small criticism in that it might be a good idea for the care home owner to get to know the key members of the family as this would help build more confidence with the high-level management and the patient's families.
