Alexandra House is situated in lovely grounds and next to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow. This spacious home provides care for older people, older people with dementia and nursing care. All the bedrooms and lounges are beautifully furnished with wall-mounted flat screen televisions. The en-suites are fitted with light sensors to turn on the lights to aid those cared for and also contribute towards a greener environment.

The home has an area specifically designed for relaxation with soft fibre optic lights, oils to promote a sense of well being and peaceful pictures. A dedicated area for dementia care is designed to enable those cared for to maintain independence in a safe environment.

Generally good, but at weekends I find that the staff covering don't appear to be as well trained at dealing with the elderly. This results in me feeling like an object as opposed to a person.

Job Title: Home Manager

I began my career in the care sector in 2008, and over the past 17 years, I’ve had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, including hospitals. I started as a care assistant and gradually progressed through roles as a senior carer, deputy manager, and now, home manager.


I’ve been part of the Alexandra House family for the past five years, initially joining as a Night CTL before becoming Deputy Manager. Many of you may already know me from the Strawberry Unit or from seeing me around the home.


What truly sets Alexandra House apart for me is the strong sense of family among our team and the unwavering commitment to putting our residents first. Our staff go above and beyond every day, and I’m proud to be part of such a dedicated group.


My door is always open, and I look forward to meeting you, whether it’s during a visit with your loved one or at one of our monthly relatives' meetings.

I have been in the role for almost 10 years; February 2025 will mark my tenth year with Runwood Homes. I really have enjoyed my time to date with Alexandra House. We have a great team here, and it’s a pleasure to work with them; also, the management team is very supportive. I like pretty much all aspects of the role; it is a very demanding and rewarding role.


In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my partner and children. I also enjoy sports, mainly football and tennis; I am a bit of a Tottenham Hotspur supporter.

Martin Mares

Job Title: Head Chef Joined: 2020

My name is Martin. I grew up in Slovakia and spent 4 years studying to be a chef before moving to the UK. I came to the UK for a holiday and decided I liked it here and wasn’t going home! I took a role in retail to gain confidence in the English language before joining a renowned care provider as a kitchen assistant. Within 3 months I had advanced to chef and then very quickly to Head Chef.  It was a whole new experience learning about English cuisine and our quirky likes and dislikes; baking was a completely new experience, as I had not experienced this at home. My passion for my chosen career kept me in this role for 6 years, working across three different sites. I took the opportunity to progress to Regional Chef which involved menu planning, audits, recruitment, training, and writing policies, a role I continued in for 4 years.


I happened to see an advert for Head Chef at Alexandra House, which is very local to me and decided it was time to go for a change. I joined Alexandra House 4 months ago and have seen joining Runwood as a great career move. I love the friendliness of the team and the great management of Alexandra House, where I feel a highly valued member of the team.


I feel passionately that food is of the utmost importance to our residents and should be a high-quality, enriching experience at every mealtime for all. I aim to accommodate individual tastes, and if there is a particular food that a resident favours that is not on the menu, I will ensure we make it available for them. It is important for me to meet new residents when they arrive to discuss their preferences and any allergies alongside any needs for a modified diet.


“My plan for the summer is to hold international food days; Italian is my favourite to cook! Tasting days for the residents are something I am extremely excited about; let their tastes help steer the direction of our menus.”

Hello, my name is Judith, and I am the Deputy Manager here at Alexandra House. I bring over 12 years of experience in caring for elderly people, including those living with dementia. I began my journey at Alexandra House as a care assistant in 2012 and have worked my way up through various roles to become Deputy Manager.


I truly enjoy collaborating with our team to deliver the highest quality, person-centred care to all our residents. Every aspect of my role brings me joy, as it allows me to make a meaningful difference in their lives.


In my spare time, I am an active member of my church, where I also sing in the choir.
