This attractive and professionally managed care home rated Outstanding in ‘Well Led’ by the Care Quality Commission in January 2020, has been supporting the local community of Ware for over fifteen years. Established and purpose-built with a positive reputation, Westgate House Care Centre offers quality nursing, residential, rehabilitation and dementia care in a peaceful but central location.

The long-standing home manager, who has been in post for over five years, leads an effective and stable staff group. This, and exceptional in-house training, ensures a skilled and responsive care team to meet the changing individual needs and expectations of every resident. With a caring and compassionate team, where nothing is too much trouble to help residents settle into their new home, the family ethos and the warm relationships the staff achieve are greatly valued by both residents and visitors.

Westgate House has some highly attractive and charming themed day areas in which to relax or socialise; these include the Garden Café – a firm favourite for those who like to enjoy a coffee and chat with the morning paper, the Cinema room, a Reminiscence room, and Café Pierre. Comfortable bedrooms have their own ensuite toilets and washbasins and the home’s showers and bathrooms are newly refurbished.

There are a number of outdoor spaces including a sensory courtyard for residents to benefit from and a separate garden for spending time with friends and relatives.

The facilities have been designed to enhance resident care and quality of life, to optimise cleanliness and help minimise the spread of any infections; this includes a natural ventilation system, wood effect flooring, hand washing facilities in every room and the use of hand gel dispensers throughout the home.

My overall impression of Westgate was a good home where I was happy to see my mother staying. The accommodation was clean, pleasant, light and airy, and the overall standard of care was good.


There are just a couple of things that I wasn't wholly happy about:


1. The level of care at the weekends

was noticeably less good - fewer staff were available


2. At times, lack of information/communication with relatives about care/medication/treatment being given


3. Insufficient attention to kitchen hygiene: sometimes mugs and cutlery didn't appear to have been washed properly, and surfaces hadn't been wiped

My experience was very good. The staff are understanding and helpful. The treatment was discussed with the appropriate staff and a plan drawn up to get me back on my feet.


The staff were happy which shows a positive workplace and makes for a pleasant and good experience for the user.

I must admit, I was a little dubious about spending time in a care home not having any experience as to what care homes are all about. And I must admit any fears were washed away once I was here. The room, the staff, the food was definitely up to standard and the staff are a credit to Westgate House

If you are looking for a care home, look no further, as I can fully recommend Westgate House. From the very first day, they have been nothing but helpful, obliging and understanding in difficult times. The facilities are superb compared to other Care Centres visited.

My husband was treated with kindness and consideration throughout his stay. Nothing was too much trouble and the food was very good, a good selection and well cooked.
For myself, as his wife, all my questions were dealt with in a kind manner and again nothing was too much trouble.
We were both well
pleased with the physio he had and again all questions were dealt with kindly and the aim towards his recovery well explained.

My stay here has been very pleasant as I am a stranger to the area. Staff are pleasant conscientious and extremely busy. I would point out the necessity of patients who need a toilet before, after and during meal breaks and change over staff AM and PM.
It is a basic human right to be able to be toileted.
My rehabilitation has been slow and I thank everyone for their efforts.

Nancy has been the manager of Westgate House since 2014. Having worked in the Health and Social Care field for 30 years in a variety of roles and environments, Nancy has had the platform to develop Westgate House in to a home that has a CQC ‘Good’ rating along with a fantastic staff team who support each other in making Westgate House an enjoyable place to live and work.
