This attractive and professionally managed care home rated Outstanding in ‘Well Led’ by the Care Quality Commission in January 2020, has been supporting the local community of Ware for over fifteen years. Established and purpose-built with a positive reputation, Westgate House Care Centre offers quality nursing, residential, rehabilitation and dementia care in a peaceful but central location.

The long-standing home manager, who has been in post for over five years, leads an effective and stable staff group. This, and exceptional in-house training, ensures a skilled and responsive care team to meet the changing individual needs and expectations of every resident. With a caring and compassionate team, where nothing is too much trouble to help residents settle into their new home, the family ethos and the warm relationships the staff achieve are greatly valued by both residents and visitors.

Westgate House has some highly attractive and charming themed day areas in which to relax or socialise; these include the Garden Café – a firm favourite for those who like to enjoy a coffee and chat with the morning paper, the Cinema room, a Reminiscence room, and Café Pierre. Comfortable bedrooms have their own ensuite toilets and washbasins and the home’s showers and bathrooms are newly refurbished.

There are a number of outdoor spaces including a sensory courtyard for residents to benefit from and a separate garden for spending time with friends and relatives.

The facilities have been designed to enhance resident care and quality of life, to optimise cleanliness and help minimise the spread of any infections; this includes a natural ventilation system, wood effect flooring, hand washing facilities in every room and the use of hand gel dispensers throughout the home.

Fantastic, caring and loving staff. My mum spent the last week of her life in here and the staff couldn't have been more helpful, considerate and there when you needed them.

My mum has been a resident now for nearly three years due to a mobility problem and continues to be very happy and well looked after. When you enter Westgate there is always a very warm welcome which is so important. I have found the staff on the floor to be so kind and helpful to mum and she is very
fond of them. If you have a concern they will do their best to resolve the problem. I visit mum regularly and although I miss her living with us when I leave her I know she is happy and confident with the care and kindness given. I cannot thank everyone enough.

I enjoyed my stay at Westgate House Care Centre but it was very sad for me as my husband died in hospital while I was there. I was treated very kindly by the staff.

My father was admitted to Westgate after breaking his hip. The staff went above and beyond. I cannot thank the team enough. He was well cared for, staff took the time to talk to him daily, prepare his needs and give him regular physio. Fantastic centre.

From personal experience, the Westgate House team looked after both my mother-in-law and father-in-law with great care during the time they were both there. All of the team involved in looking after them over the last two years worked very hard to keep them safe and happy through the challenges of the
pandemic and their individual health issues until they both passed away peacefully. As all of our family live a considerable distance away up North, it was always very reassuring to know that they were in good hands and we were always kept well informed of any issues in a professional and timely manner. We had great support in arranging face-to-face contact visits and FaceTime sessions when visiting was restricted during Covid. I would not hesitate in recommending Westgate House Care Centre for its committed care and professionalism.

In the circumstances, the meals provided were very good indeed. The carers were always helpful but were pressed to respond promptly when residents called for attention at the same time. The provision of medication (pills) was excellent. The room was comfortable and warm. A special mention to the physio
is deserved, she made every effort to make the exercise sessions a happy and stretching time.

We visit our friend each week and we have noticed how much healthier he is looking since being in your care home. We find him clean and tidy. From coming into reception we are made very welcome, a very clean and happy home.

The premises and staff were all great. Maybe a bit more fruit and veg in diet and a bit more simple choices, but ok. Physio definitely got me moving, thank you. Did not expect to graduate to trying just a stick, but still working on that. Group lunches are a very good idea - pity only on weekdays though.

All staff are caring, efficient, exercise regime thorough and helpful. Large room with big window and TV. Frequent cleaning and a bell for calling attention or help. A variety of tasty meals. Generally, a nice, happy place to be with kind and friendly staff.

Mum was only in the care home for 13 days but was treated very kindly. I live 400 miles away, and the ability to FaceTime my mother was appreciated. We were allowed to stay with my mother overnight at the end of her life, and the nursing staff were very discreet and compassionate throughout. Thank you.

Since I've been here, I have improved greatly with my mobility, thanks to the physio team. I will carry on with my exercises and build my muscles to make me stronger. I arrived here July 8th in great pain, hardly able to stand and had not walked for 8 days after a right hip revision replacement. I was scared I was never going to walk again. The wonderful physio team soon motivated me and gave me the confidence to become mobile again. The nursing staff, carer and
all other staff were always kind, helpful and respectful of my feelings. My experience here has been excellent.

The rooms were pleasant with TV but the bed was very uncomfortable. My mother could not sleep. Staff were not unpleasant, but few smiled or acknowledged her presence. She does not suffer from dementia and, for a 97-year-old, her brain is sharp, active and thirsty for new experiences; Westgate did not
seem prepared for this type of patient.
My mother was there for rehabilitation and the physiotherapists were very good. But apart from that, my mother was 'confined' to her room by staff who told her not to leave it. Where are the wonderful facilities boasted about on the website? Where was the full activities programme, bars, cinemas or even the dining room? My mother had to spend all day and night in virtual isolation. As a result within two days she became tearful and very depressed. On the third day I rescued her and thankfully brought her home where she is now far happier. Never again!

I attended Westgate House for four weeks of rehabilitation after a fall at home. My overall experience was very positive with respect to the staff, the facilities and the treatment received. I am unable to identify any negative issues for Westgate.
