This attractive and professionally managed care home rated Outstanding in ‘Well Led’ by the Care Quality Commission in January 2020, has been supporting the local community of Ware for over fifteen years. Established and purpose-built with a positive reputation, Westgate House Care Centre offers quality nursing, residential, rehabilitation and dementia care in a peaceful but central location.

The long-standing home manager, who has been in post for over five years, leads an effective and stable staff group. This, and exceptional in-house training, ensures a skilled and responsive care team to meet the changing individual needs and expectations of every resident. With a caring and compassionate team, where nothing is too much trouble to help residents settle into their new home, the family ethos and the warm relationships the staff achieve are greatly valued by both residents and visitors.

Westgate House has some highly attractive and charming themed day areas in which to relax or socialise; these include the Garden Café – a firm favourite for those who like to enjoy a coffee and chat with the morning paper, the Cinema room, a Reminiscence room, and Café Pierre. Comfortable bedrooms have their own ensuite toilets and washbasins and the home’s showers and bathrooms are newly refurbished.

There are a number of outdoor spaces including a sensory courtyard for residents to benefit from and a separate garden for spending time with friends and relatives.

The facilities have been designed to enhance resident care and quality of life, to optimise cleanliness and help minimise the spread of any infections; this includes a natural ventilation system, wood effect flooring, hand washing facilities in every room and the use of hand gel dispensers throughout the home.

From the time I was dropped off here in a wheelchair after a month in hospital who saved me, sepsis plus misunderstandings, the driver was so good-humoured and joking. On arrival here, I was met with a vision by reception who picked up on our musical conversation but from the word go everyone was so
friendly, helpful and caring. My stay here has been wonderful, extended only by my idiot landlord delaying bringing me my laptop, without which he doesn't get owed rent. He's more than a wally but the staff here are terrific even when short-staffed, it happens, if anything they overdo it. The completely disabled in here are well cared for, relatives do call at times. Who was with the old dear across the way while we had dinner in a large room? Her daughter, who looked nice, closed the door wanting privacy and too right. So I've got nothing but praise, they are cleaning all the time, discarding wrappers.

I have just returned home from this care home and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. My three-week stay was very comfortable, with an abundance of very enjoyable meals. The staff were very pleasant and caring and an outstanding physiotherapy department was readily available.

My mother was treated with great care and respect in what turned out to be the last few weeks of her life. The staff went out of their way to provide a happy and cheerful environment for her despite the covid-19 restrictions.

We could not have wished for any better care for our mum whilst in the care of Westgate care home in Ware. She was looked after by everyone from the reception staff to all the wonderful carers. I was upset on arrival, as due to Government guidelines, I would have to isolate for 14-days. Soon realised this did not mean the door shut all the time! A beautiful room looking down on the treetops. All the staff are very friendly and helpful, treating each person as an individual, remembering likes
and dislikes. Always calling you by name - as if a part of a family. Very patient with people with varying disabilities. Excellent selection of food and drink served attractively and with attention to detail. Physiotherapy is excellent. Encouragement in a positive way with explanations and heartfelt given, very helpful indeed and sorted several personal problem and special shoes. Truly excellent.

Westgate House have been excellent right through reception to care staff. I cannot fault anything. They looked after my mum with compassion and dignity. We didn't have any worries with our mum due to the excellent staff at Westgate House.

I was transferred to Westgate House Care Centre from hospital for rehab after spending almost five weeks in the hospital. I found the home very clean and welcoming. All the staff were very professional and extremely friendly, nothing was too much trouble.

I came to Westgate from the hospital - on one occasion to recover from a broken arm. Then subsequently to recover from an operation - on both occasions, I found all the staff extremely kind and caring. They were thoughtful of my situation and treated me with dignity and respect. I would have no hesitation

My husband was discharged from hospital to the home, under health/social care Covid regulations and so I did not have a choice of the care home he was placed in. This, plus the inability to enter the home, to view the facilities and to meet staff and to only be able to visit him occasionally outside,
was concerning and stressful. Over time, however, it became apparent that he was well cared for and that staff had worked hard to understand his needs - as he was unable to communicate these due to his dementia - and to address them. When it became clear that my husband was nearing the end of his life, the staff made every effort to keep me updated and to facilitate extra visits. The unit manager, in particular, could not have been more supportive. I am thankful for the professional, respectful and dignified care the staff provided.

My stepmum was a resident from the beginning of COVID lockdown 2020. Such a difficult time for residents, families and staff. They have been so kind to everyone. My stepmum said they helped her with everything - nothing too much trouble, and with dignity at all times. She was comfortable being there.
The staff were extremely helpful at all times. When it came near to her passing, they encouraged us to call whenever we felt the need to. They weren't just caring for my stepmum, but for us too. They were genuinely upset too when she did pass. A great team! Thank you so much.

I went there for rehabilitation after surgery on my leg, although the home is primarily for the elderly and I am only 45. The staff and management on the first floor where I was staying, I have to say, were excellent and didn't make it feel like I was staying in an old people's home.

My Dad was transferred from hospital to Westgate for rehabilitation after breaking his hip just before Christmas. Unfortunately, he had other health problems which required more end of life care, rather than rehabilitation. All the staff were fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble. Communication between
staff and myself was excellent, despite these unprecedented times and the fact they had a big problem with their telephone system, staff resorted to using their personal phones. Took great comfort in knowing he received the best possible end of life care. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts.

Sent to Westgate House Care Centre for mobilisation rehab. Physio was very good but there were not enough sessions to make a difference/improvement. Went home less mobile. Presumably because of Covid there was very little socialising so spent too much time sat in the chair all day. Needed to be mobilised
which did not happen.

Nancy has been the manager of Westgate House since 2014. Having worked in the Health and Social Care field for 30 years in a variety of roles and environments, Nancy has had the platform to develop Westgate House in to a home that has a CQC ‘Good’ rating along with a fantastic staff team who support each other in making Westgate House an enjoyable place to live and work.
