I was truly shocked to see my sister. Her room was very basic to say the least. No sink toilet or shower. Nothing to make the room feel homely. She has no way of moving herself in or around her bed, which didnt look very comfy. She just stays in bed all day and night with nothing to do. I'm in shock. If I could I'd move her to a care home near me in Essex. Not impressed.

There is a lack of care, particularly with giving medication - a cream is supposed to be applied three times a day but is rarely given more than twice. Staples keep running out (tea bags, sugar and sweeteners). When asking for anything the answer is mostly 'not at this minute' or 'you will have to wait'. Staff do not come into the room so that my wife can see them or hear them a lot of the time.

Mum has been looked after well for the last three years. Staff are friendly and do their best to accommodate any requests we may have. The activities team work very hard. Communal areas have been refurbished but some bedrooms still need to be updated. Overall, I am happy with the care Mum is receiving.

Words wouldn't describe what wonderful treatment I've has since I've been here, to be honest, I shall be sorry to leave, but there's no place like home is there. The nurses were great; they didn't mind what they did for me. Thank you all.

My aunty came in for a short stay from the hospital, and the difference the staff have made to her is fantastic.
My aunty had poor mobility and had lost a lot of weight, and now after two months, she has put on weight and is able to walk a little, and this is all down to the wonderful staff.

She now gets her hair done once a week, and is joining in activities and is "living" again, and I could not ask for more.

I am writing this review as I want to say how lovely it is to be able to visit again. The carers help out with making sure we have our test before coming in to make sure that everyone is safe, and even though I am sure this makes their job even harder, they always seem pleased to see us and happy to help!

Unfortunately, my mother was admitted to Wombwell Hall Care Home in January 2020 and the home has, of course, been in almost permanent lockdown since then. Notwithstanding she is 93 this year, contracted covid and is still with us which can only be due to the care and diligence of the excellent staff. Due to the minimum amount of inside visits that I have been able to make over the past 15 months, I feel unable to comment on some areas.

It has taken me a little bit of time to write this after losing our dear Mum-in-law to Covid.
Although this was the most terrible time for us, the staff in the home showed such care and compassion, allowing us to visit to say our goodbyes.
The poor staff have suffered from a terrible time in the last few weeks, as covid took hold, and they have been nothing short of remarkable, always continuing to try and smile despite the pressures they have faced.
I could not have wished for a better group of people to care for her and also for us. They even dressed up on Christmas Eve and went around the outside of the home to try to cheer everyone up, from the maintenance man, activities, housekeeping and managers - all of them made such an effort to try to make the best of a bad situation.

Thank you will never be enough.

I always found this care home extremely helpful, the staff always smiling in difficult situations, they always seem to know what to say and how to handle the residents. It's a hard job and very much undervalued.

My wife has Parkinsons and dementia and is 89 years of age. Since my wife was admitted in June this year, I have visited her every day. From day 1 I have been treated with kindness and friendliness, I feed my wife her dinner always, and the food is excellent and nourishing. There is always a choice of the two to choose from. The staff, from the matron down to the cleaning, are very good and helpful when I am present, to the residents and visitor. The activities staff are enthusiastic, inventive and have varied programmes.

Since the arrival of the manager in Pickwick House at Wombwell Hall, I have noticed a big difference in very little time.
The team appear to be less rushed and there seems to be more of them on duty at any one time.
It is lovely to see more residents in the day room and there is a lot more interaction with the team.
A trip out to the café this afternoon - how wonderful.

Well done team Pickwick.

Richard Lawson
Richard Lawson Job Title: General Manager Joined: 2025

Richard has enjoyed a varied career. After beginning his post college working life in social care, he then focussed on working with teenagers and young people. This in turn led him, (by accident he will tell you) to take to the high seas, and spent a number of years on cruise ships around the globe. Upon returning to dry land, Richard worked in a number of related industries both in the UK and for a short period abroad - hospitality, entertainment and show management, including media and local radio - he even became an award winner whilst managing a seaside pier and theatre!

However, this led to Rich being headhunted back into health and social care management, which is where he has stayed for the past 15 years. He has worked as a Home Manager, General Manager, Operations Director, Regional Manager and Director - and now is delighted to join Belmont Healthcare as the General Manager at Wombwell Hall. A little care village with a big heart and ambitious plans for the future...

Richard's whole career has centred around the same basic core principles and values, from day one. A love, respect and duty of care for people, a passionate commitment to the most outstanding customer service which includes caring - really, really caring. And that is as true today as it ever was - and what you will find at Wombwell Hall.
