I have been very impressed with the care and attention which the staff have given to my husband.
He has been treated with dignity and encouraged to get moving after as spell of six weeks in bed at hospital.
After two weeks he is able to stand out of the chair and beginning to walk again.

The staff have been very encouraging at all times and this has helped him as well as me.

I visit my husband's auntie here once a week and I can clearly see how hard the staff work. They are extremely patient and eager to give the best possible care to their residents. I am very impressed with the energetic activities team who strive to make each day as fulfilling as possible. Thank you.

The nursing staff are very helpful and accommodating. On my pre-visit was shown all over the residence and I was very impressed. Nothing is too much trouble. Since my mother was admitted it has taken a lot of worry and pressure away from me and I now can relax and concentrate on other matters knowing she is in good hands. The carers are very supportive and very kind, listening to my concerns and putting my mind at rest. I can and will thoroughly recommend Wombwell Hall if asked.

Staff are so helpful and supportive, and go out of their way to assist my mother and keep us informed as to her wellbeing.
She finds it difficult to eat - but has been assisted to find things that suit her.

The room is well decorated and kept clean.

Although I think the staff are dedicated to their jobs, I feel sometimes there seems to be a lack of organisation and urgency to deal with issues.

I appreciate that the staff are under a lot of pressure due to shortage of staff and funding.

My mum was a resdient for over 4 years and in all that time, all the staff have looked after her with dignity and respect. They cared for her as though she was family. We will always be grateful for all their care and help in making mum's last few years as happy as it could be.
Cannot praise the staff enough.

Thank you.

The staff are always welcoming when I visit my husband. They tell me what has been happening with him. They are a lovely bunch and seem more like family than staff.

My husband loves having banter with them.

The home is set in a pleasant, well-kept environment and provides a good variety of meals. On the whole, the staff are very caring but often overworked. The activities team provide a good range of things to do to suit all abilities, supplying help where needed.

My mother has been at Wombwell Hall (Pickwick House) for nearly 3 years. We spent a lot of time investigating all the care homes in the area and found that Wombwell Hall was the best in every respect. The staff are clearly dedicated and caring for all of the residents. It requires a special kind of dedication to care for the elderly and they have it. I would have no hesitation in recommending Wombwell Hall.

My sister spent a little over two weeks in Wombwell Hall Care Home before she sadly passed away. The staff were unfailingly kind, caring, empathetic to both her and our family. They were warm and friendly and went the extra mile for us. A lovely home and one the company should be proud of. My mum also passed away in Wombwell Hall Care Home 10 years ago and received the same excellent care.

Review from A H (Brother of Resident) published on 9 October 2018 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience

My brother spent the last 6 months of his life at Wombwell Hall. He suffered from MND which left him at times very frustrated at his inability to communicate, which in turn made him very demanding at times. We have to commend the staff for their patience over that period of time. However he did often complain about the night staff treating him as a dementia patient, he understood exactly where his life was going.

I found my stay here a very positive one. Everyone makes you feel welcome and explains any care or treatment plans with you. Nursing staff and carers are excellent and make you feel as you are part of a big family. The only problem is that some residents keep shouting and banging on tables at night and during the day - very upsetting for visitors and grandchildren.

Reply from Clare Sheehan, Careline Advisor at Wombwell Hall Care Home

Thank you for your kind comments regarding the staff and the Home during your stay at Wombwell. Some Residents have limited abilities and the shouting and banging of objects is their way of communicating. We apologise if this caused any upset to your family members and visitors but are pleased to hear that your stay overall was a positive one.

Whilst the staff are willing and have the skills for the tasks - they lack management guidance. The staff number of two per night for 30 beds per unit is not sufficient - toilet arrangements are compromising.

The activities could and should be much better organised with more budget staff.

Reply from Clare Sheehan, Careline Advisor at Wombwell Hall Care Home

Thank you for your comments. Sorry that you feel we have 2 staff on at night, we actually have three night staff members per unit which includes a trained nurse who forms part of the team. If more than one resident needs to use the bathroom at the same time, we need two members of the team to...

Review from Norman S (Husband of Resident) published on 21 September 2018 Submitted via Postal Card

In the recent past, there has been a low priority to take people to the toilet. Long waiting times for buzzers to be answered, then turned off and having to wait for a carer to return. Some of the food is inedible, some very good. There is a shortage of day staff and certainly at night. Residents are kept on medication long after needed, painkillers etc. It's up to relatives to see the doctor and get them stopped, overall cleanliness is good, and some staff very good.

Richard Lawson Job Title: General Manager Joined: 2025

Richard has enjoyed a varied career. After beginning his post college working life in social care, he then focussed on working with teenagers and young people. This in turn led him, (by accident he will tell you) to take to the high seas, and spent a number of years on cruise ships around the globe. Upon returning to dry land, Richard worked in a number of related industries both in the UK and for a short period abroad - hospitality, entertainment and show management, including media and local radio - he even became an award winner whilst managing a seaside pier and theatre!

However, this led to Rich being headhunted back into health and social care management, which is where he has stayed for the past 15 years. He has worked as a Home Manager, General Manager, Operations Director, Regional Manager and Director - and now is delighted to join Belmont Healthcare as the General Manager at Wombwell Hall. A little care village with a big heart and ambitious plans for the future...

Richard's whole career has centred around the same basic core principles and values, from day one. A love, respect and duty of care for people, a passionate commitment to the most outstanding customer service which includes caring - really, really caring. And that is as true today as it ever was - and what you will find at Wombwell Hall.
