First of all, I would like to thank the manager and his staff for helping us through this difficult time.
Mum was placed at St James Park over an hour from where we live, and this has been extremely hard for my father to deal with and caused great distress. The4 manager has been wonderful giving both
me and my father virtual tours of the home. By seeing where Mum was etc, it has helped to reassure Dad. We have been able to have Zoom calls with Mum, and yesterday, we were able to visit for the first time. Dad was given Covid test on site before visiting Mum, and I was able to watch and support them from outside on the patio. This visit meant so much to my dad, and to see my mum smiling was brilliant for us all. We were able to pass on Mother's day gifts, cards and flowers, and we are already booked in again to visit Mum next week. Mum cannot contribute to this review sadly.
Thank you again to the manager - you made an awful situation much easier, and we are very grateful.

My father has been a resident for quite a few years, now and I have always felt that he has been treated with dignity and compassion. I would not hesitate to recommend St James' to anybody else who may be considering residential/nursing care for a relative.

Under the near-impossible demands on all care homes under Covid, St James' Park works closely with families to maintain communication, dignity and comfort. The leadership is great and people-focused, with a compassionate balance between the needs of staff, residents and family. I wish we were experiencing
the home as it would be intended to be experienced outside of the pandemic. It is difficult to rate all areas as access to the premises is not permitted.

When I first visited the home I was very apprehensive but was reassured to find that it was a happy and caring place. Since then my first impressions have been confirmed. The staff are kind compassionate and I know my partner is well cared for. The COVID crisis has been difficult for all but is has
been well handled within the home and it has so far remained infection-free. The food could be improved and a larger lift would be a bonus.
Reply from Julie Caygill, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at St James' Park Care HomeThank you for taking the time to complete a review of St James' Park. We are pleased that you found the home a compassionate and kind environment, the care staff here work incredibly hard to ensure that this is the case. COVID has been trying for us all, staff have worked tirelessly to ensure the highest standards of infection control are maintained. I am very proud of the hard work, dedication and commitment they have shown during this period and this is an extension of their overall commitment to St James' Park and to the residents who live here. I passed your comment regarding the food to our chefs who maintain their best efforts to ensure the food here is both wholesome and nutritionally balanced. If your loved one would like to talk to our head chef regarding a more personalised menu please contact me and I will arrange for this. Again I would like to thank you for your very positive comments and will pass them on to my outstanding dedicated, and hardworking staff team.

My father is a resident with St James and myself and my family have the highest regard for all the staff who look after dad. He is treated with such care, dignity and respect. My dad has recently had a bereavement and the staff have been amazing with dad and us as a family, treating us with dignity
and total respect at such a difficult time. A huge thank you to all.

I was impressed by the beautiful location and wonderful facilities. On meeting the staff of care, medical and housekeeping departments I thought this was the place for my wife. As a daily visitor, I came to know all the staff, wonderful people.
The best decision I ever made.

We have seen some good care homes and some terrible ones. This is a great one. The staff are friendly and easy to get on with. The rooms are nice and clean with nice little touches that make it seem like home, such as little teddy bears in some of the rooms. It's in a quiet location that's out of the
way and relaxing. There always seems to be something going on in the way of activities. We never mind taking our relative here even though there are places that are nearer this is worth the trip.

Mum has been in respite for the last week and seems to have enjoyed it. We've had respite at a few care homes in recent years but this has been the most successful. Mum has been able to join in with the activities when she wanted, or stay in her room if she preferred peace and quiet. The food is good
quality and the menus certainly looked tempting!

All staff are friendly and helpful, with a good ratio of staff to residents, the premises are clean and tidy. Mum's room looks over the surrounding hills with a tv and a friendly bear sat on her chest of drawers. She's stayed in some barren places, lacking the personal touch having not taken time to make sure a respite room is cosy and equipped. It is a refreshing change to see somewhere that has made an effort - even the curtains and duvet matched. The lounge/dining room are very welcoming and sunny with amazing views.

Thank you to you all for making this a success - looking forward to a return visit in the summer if you have a room!

My mother has received excellent care since she moved to St James Park in February 2017. She's nearly blind, very deaf, immobile and quite difficult at times, but the care team are always extremely patient and very kind to her. The home provides a daily schedule of interesting and varied activities,
but because of my mother's physical weaknesses, there are very few activities that she can participate in. However she is always given the opportunity to join in if she wants to.

This month, January 2019, my mother has been very poorly, but thanks to round the clock monitoring and dedicated care from all the wonderful team, she is now very much better. My thanks to everyone.

My father has been here since September 2018. The staff and management went out of their way to make him feel welcome and to ensure he settled in. The standard of care he has received has been exceptional and I feel confident and comfortable leaving him in their care. He is always clean and well dressed
and he tells me how lovely the carers are and how kind and gentle they are. Every one of the staff and management smile when they see you and speak, making visitors feel welcome and the home seems very well managed.

The standard of food is very good, and my father is very pleased with the selection and choice available. Having eaten there myself I can confirm how fresh, tasty and well presented the food is.

There is a wide range of activities offered to the residents which my father enjoys joining in. The only way I could think that the home could improve would be the provision of a minibus which would enable residents to be offered a wider range of activities outside the home.

Reply from Clare Sheehan, Careline Advisor at St James' Park Care HomeThank you for your positive comments, we are glad to hear you are happy with the care we provide to your father. We are hopeful that HC-One will be able to provide us with a minibus in the future as this would enable us to offer a wider range of activities outside the home. At present we can access a wheelchair taxi service but are limited as it can only take 1 Resident at a time.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.827)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.827) out of 10 for St James' Park Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 28 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 28 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.827 for St James' Park Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (278 Excellents x 5) + (56 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 335 Ratings = 4.827
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St James' Park Care Home is based on 28 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 31 registered maximum number of service users is 6.2, which has been reached with 28 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
