Calway House has a strong community reputation for residential care and, since opening, has been rebuilt as a larger, modern home in order to support more people.

Care workers support an active lifestyle and clients are welcome to personalise their surroundings. Residential rooms are arranged in groups of 15, with each group having access to its own living and dining areas.

Staff keep up-to-date with each individual's care needs and are trained in dementia care, for which there is a dedicated 'Petals' dementia care suite. The home has also achieved Platinum status under the Gold Standard Framework for palliative care (2017).

I am an occasional visitor to Calway House over a short period since my neighbour/friend has been admitted. Hence my limited knowledge of some of the ratings are not relevant (i.e. Value for Money) Overall I have been impressed with the standard of care provided from very pleasant, helpful staff who
are genuinely caring for patients. Standard of cleanliness appears high and it seems to me to be a very happy place.

I am exceptionally pleased with the care and compassion all the staff at Calway House have shown in helping my Mum settle in. The staff are friendly, caring & patient. As my Mum has dementia it is such a relief to know she is safe, well fed and cared for. The activities provided every day are a real
bonus and have played a massive part in settling my Mum in. Calway House is spotlessly clean every time I visit. All the staff are most welcoming and available to chat to no matter what time of day you arrive. I have no hesitation in recommending Calway House.
Reply from Calway House, Somerset Care at Calway HouseDear Lindsey, thank you for taking the time to share your wonderful feedback for Calway House in Taunton. We understand that moving into a new environment can be unsettling, especially for those living with dementia. We are glad to be able to support your Mum to feel safe and comfortable, and to enable her to take part in stimulating and meaningful activities. Thank you for trusting her into our care.

My Mum has been in Calway House since October, so I knew Christmas was going to be rather different.
The staff have been amazing and very attentive. They organised Christmas Lunch for Mum and I in one of their lounges. It was lovely.
The staff had organised gifts for all of the residents, and lots
of thought had gone into it. Mum received a new pair of comfortable shoes which was a hit.

My wife was admitted in March 2024 for end of life care and although she was bedbound all staff were very kind and supportive both to her and myself. It helped us get through a very traumatic time.
A friend of mine is also currently at Calway House and is always happy, well cared for and settled.
All staff seem genuinely fond of her and spend time with her. I always find the atmosphere calm and caring.
Reply from Calway House, Somerset Care at Calway HouseThank you so much for your kind review for Calway House. My stepmum went into Calway House, Spruce, in January 2023 as she could no longer care for herself, she had beginnings of dementia and her mobility was poor. The staff were very caring and mum made lots of friends, everyone seems to know her. Earlier this month, due to her extremely poor mobility
and progressing dementia, she had a fall and fractured her knee ending up in a plaster cast. She spent 5 days in hospital which accelerated her dementia/confusion however she had a lovely welcome back to Calway House by all the staff, although she is now in Nursing Care. She has a lovely room overlooking the garden, and although it is taking her time to get used to a different room, the care has been wonderful. We know she is safe and well looked after in their care. Rooms and premises are always clean and tidy. We are kept up to date if any problems arise or changes in medication or her care.
Reply from Calway House, Somerset Care at Calway HouseThank you for your kind words about the care your Stepmum receives at Calway House in Taunton. It is a privilege to care for her, and we are touched by your feedback. We understand that the progression of dementia affects not only the individual, but their loved ones as well, so we do all we can to support the whole family - we are pleased to hear that your experience reflects this. Very happy with the care mum is receiving at Calway House. Mum has settled in well. The staff are very caring towards mum, always kind and patient. We are welcomed when we visit and staff happy to answer any questions or discuss any issues. The home is always clean and well maintained. The outdoor space
is a real bonus and mum loves sitting in the garden. They are very receptive to suggestions. I recently commented to the manager that the main door was difficult to navigate with mum in her wheelchair due to a slightly raised threshold. The manager came to look at it with me and said she would request an opinion from their maintenance team. Within about 4 weeks, the threshold now has a small ramp on it which makes wheeling the wheel chair over so much easier and more comfortable for mum. Thank you for listening and taking action.

My first experience of Calway House was for my father in 2020. He was elderly and admitted after a hospital stay. He recovered so well at Calway that he was able to transfer to residential. He died in 2020 - only of old age. His care at Calway was outstanding. Currently, my Aunt is in Calway House.
She was very ill upon arrival and was only expected to live for two months. Her recovery has been dramatic. This is due to the care and kindness of all the staff. We as a family cannot thank everyone enough.

Perceptive & supportive response from very first enquiry for 2 older people for whom managing daily life at home, one caring for the other, had become too challenging. Refreshing 'want to help' attitude in a broader overstretched social care environment. More than once have felt relief that what I
thought might present a hurdle has felt so easy. Thorough assessment, efficient admission processes, clear communication throughout. Felt able to trust the obvious skill of nursing, and activities staff from day one. Warm and welcoming ethos seen from staff in all roles. More commendable in light of how demanding this work is, and the challenges presented during settling in period. Thoughtfulness demonstrated in so many ways. Thank you

My mother has been a resident at Calway House since November 2022 and as a family we have been extremely happy with the care she receives. All staff really do an impeccable job of looking after her; understanding her complex needs, advocating for her, looking after her, keeping her safe and happy. We
always feel welcome when we visit and included in her care. It was not an easy decision to accept that mum needed to move into full time care but we genuinely could not have asked for a better care home for her, and on top of that knowing that my dad can still feel such an integral part of her life despite not living with her.
We are incredibly grateful for the support we have received and every staff member is brilliant. I would also mention that the care home manager clearly cares a great deal about her residents.
Reply from Calway House, Somerset Care at Calway Housemany thanks for your kind words and 5-star review for Calway House. My mother has been staying at Calway House having respite care after a stay in hospital. She had heard good reports from friends in her church about Calway House and so we chose this setting.
On her release from hospital, she was really quite unwell and had lost a considerable amount of weight. She
was assessed comprehensively by the care home in the hospital so her care could be tailored to her needs on arrival.
I have visited her 2-3 times a week during her time at Calway and have always been impressed by the welcome from all staff members and the care of residents I have seen. All staff seem to do a variety of jobs and just work together to make sure things are done, this includes admin and management who interact and mix with residents. The food is a good standard and always presented well, with residents being encouraged to eat together as a shared experience. Twelve weeks after leaving the hospital my mum is now well enough to try moving home.

December 2023 both my parents came into your care as they could no longer live independently! Dad was transferred to the dementia unit in April 2024, whick was more catering for him. Mum and dad met up most meal times which was lovely. All care staff friendly and helpful. Mum passed away in July 2024
and dad January 2025. My brother and I have been very happy with the care given. Regular updates monthly and call if any problems, e.g falls, changes of medication. Rooms always clean and tidy and so were the premises.

I helped settled my dad into Calway House and then returned to my home in Australia. It has been lovely to return this Christmas and see how settled he is. Even though his dementia continues to advance and he can no longer communicate clearly, it is obvious that he is happy, content and settled in Calway.
The carers and staff are all positive, helpful and very supportive of both him and my mum, who visits everyday. Everything is clean, he is well looked after and above all safe and his smile is still as lovely as ever! My thanks to everyone involved in his care.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.756)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.756) out of 10 for Calway House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.781 for Calway House is calculated as follows: ( (174 Excellents x 5) + (42 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 219 Ratings = 4.781
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Calway House is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 92 registered maximum number of service users is 18.4, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Registered Manager

I like to think of Calway House as being like a little village community. Every resident is a valued member of our community and every resident milestone is a collective cause for celebration. Whether it’s a 99th birthday, Mother’s Day or Christmas, we mark every special occasion together.

I absolutely love working in care – and I’ve often said that I will never retire from this job, I will just move in to Calway House as a resident!

This role has given me the opportunity to make a real difference – I can ensure that all of our residents have a brilliant quality of life, and support and motivate the staff to create a really happy home for those in our care. Old certainly doesn’t mean past it, and pandemic or no pandemic, I get to help Calway House residents live their lives to the full.
