Calway House has a strong community reputation for residential care and, since opening, has been rebuilt as a larger, modern home in order to support more people.

Care workers support an active lifestyle and clients are welcome to personalise their surroundings. Residential rooms are arranged in groups of 15, with each group having access to its own living and dining areas.

Staff keep up-to-date with each individual's care needs and are trained in dementia care, for which there is a dedicated 'Petals' dementia care suite. The home has also achieved Platinum status under the Gold Standard Framework for palliative care (2017).

If I ever need to go into a care home, I hope my children will choose Calway House. The care given to my father has always been good, and they have always kept me informed of any issues. There always seems to be some activity going on during the week, and the gardens are well maintained and accessible
during the good weather.

My husband has been a resident since September last year. Since then he has appeared to have settled well although, as he is monosyllabic, he is unable to express himself. I have to assume that he is happy. I have been pleased with the level of care he receives apart from occasions when he has not been
dressed appropriately, not showered and teeth dirty when agency staff have been involved. The regular staff are very kind and caring for my husband. They treat him with dignity and respect and try to involve him in activities. It would be nice if there was more continuity with the staff. The management is good too.

I stayed for 2 weeks as a convalescent period after open-heart surgery (rather than go home)
I wanted personal security against any unexpected health incidents but did not require anything more than minimal nursing care and access to district nurses and a GP for post discharge tests.
This worked our
excellently. Very good room (lovely en-suite wet room) quiet, peaceful. Appearance and atmosphere of Calway House is very good. Staff really kind and accommodating, some shifts a bit less organised and attentive than others but overall an excellent experience. I made a good choice.

I came to visit my nana today, I’ve worked in a few care homes and nursing homes over the years and at times it’s a thankless task. I was so impressed today, the staff were great and obviously cared about the work they do, everywhere was so clean yet homely, and accommodating to all. I had my young
children with me who were apprehensive about coming, they both thought it was great and could see their nana was being so well cared for. It’s been a difficult time for my mum, aunty and grandad worrying about nana since she developed dementia and living away it’s been hard to see the strain it’s had on them and not being able to do much to help. Knowing she’s safe and being cared for by such a great team has really helped. I just wanted to say Thank you and keep up the excellent work. Best wishes.

My mum has been a resident at Calway House for the past two and a half months. All the main areas are bright and light and Mum has a good size room on the ground floor with access to the gardens. She finds the food very good ( she is a retired cook herself) and the staff very kind and friendly. She
very much enjoys taking part in activities. I have noticed a huge reduction in her anxiety levels as the weeks have gone on, and indeed my own as I believe she is being very well cared for. The staff are relaxed but diligent and when Mum had a minor problem they dealt with it sympathetically and professionally. Very highly recommended.

The care home is one of the best in Taunton for providing care and compassion to all its residents. The staff work very hard to maintain a warm and friendly atmosphere, and carrying out the required care for its most vulnerable residents.

My mother has been a resident now for the past two months.
She is well cared for in a very clean and pleasant environment.
Her room is large with lots of light and direct access to the garden area.

My sister was in Calway House just short of three and a half years. She received loving care and attention right up to her passing when she had a nurse/carer on either side of her bed.


While reception area, lounges, dining rooms have all been redecorated, attention should be focussed on re-decorating

of residents room as and when they become vacant.

The surroundings are lovely, a nice communal garden, pleasant private bedrooms with great facilities and a team of carers and nurses delivering excellent person-centred care.

Job Title: Registered Manager

I like to think of Calway House as being like a little village community. Every resident is a valued member of our community and every resident milestone is a collective cause for celebration. Whether it’s a 99th birthday, Mother’s Day or Christmas, we mark every special occasion together.


I absolutely love working in care – and I’ve often said that I will never retire from this job, I will just move in to Calway House as a resident!


This role has given me the opportunity to make a real difference – I can ensure that all of our residents have a brilliant quality of life, and support and motivate the staff to create a really happy home for those in our care. Old certainly doesn’t mean past it, and pandemic or no pandemic, I get to help Calway House residents live their lives to the full.
