During my mother's time at Calway before her death, she was always treated with care and dignity by all. The staff were always helpful to us as relatives and always took the time to help us and answer our many questions. Even under pressure and stress both my mother and our family were always treated respectfully by the staff. Thank you Calway staff for being there when we needed you.

A good experience under difficult conditions.
I liked the early settle time of 6 pm.
Most personal attention was good - better than others.
I was not especially affected by the lockdown period so did not worry me really.
I did manage to sleep very well, this was a big plus for me.
Some of the food (mostly lunchtime) was excellent, some very nice. The facilities in the home were very good.

No desk to write at - just as well, I think!

I moved into Calway House on 15/01/2019 - the best that my daughter could find. Found it to be good as it has been mostly all the time. Through the virus problems during April, it has kept given the best service it has been possible to give. The carers do the best they can, and I know they are smiling even if I cannot see them!

Carry on improving!

I came to Calway House after treatment in hospital. I am alone most of the time but I am used to that. The staff is friendly and efficient at what they do. Calls for assistance are sometimes not answered very quickly but I suppose being busy I should expect that. Generally, there is not much room for complaint.

I am so glad I chose Calway House to care for my elderly friend for whom I am appointee and next of kin. The staff are very helpful and caring and treat the residents with dignity and respect. The facilities and activities are excellent and my friend has blossomed since living there as her physical and mental health are greatly improved.

My wife went into Calway House this month and we were only able to see her once before it was closed, due to the present virus problem. She was given a nice room in the dementia wing and we were made most welcome by all the staff. Since the shut down we had messages and photos sent by the staff to keep us informed and she looks very happy there and we could not wish for a better place for her to be.

If I ever need to go into a care home, I hope my children will choose Calway House. The care given to my father has always been good, and they have always kept me informed of any issues. There always seems to be some activity going on during the week, and the gardens are well maintained and accessible during the good weather.

My husband has been a resident since September last year. Since then he has appeared to have settled well although, as he is monosyllabic, he is unable to express himself. I have to assume that he is happy. I have been pleased with the level of care he receives apart from occasions when he has not been dressed appropriately, not showered and teeth dirty when agency staff have been involved. The regular staff are very kind and caring for my husband. They treat him with dignity and respect and try to involve him in activities. It would be nice if there was more continuity with the staff. The management is good too.

I stayed for 2 weeks as a convalescent period after open-heart surgery (rather than go home)
I wanted personal security against any unexpected health incidents but did not require anything more than minimal nursing care and access to district nurses and a GP for post discharge tests.

This worked our excellently. Very good room (lovely en-suite wet room) quiet, peaceful. Appearance and atmosphere of Calway House is very good. Staff really kind and accommodating, some shifts a bit less organised and attentive than others but overall an excellent experience. I made a good choice.

Review from Katie P (Granddaughter of Resident) published on 16 April 2019 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

I came to visit my nana today, I’ve worked in a few care homes and nursing homes over the years and at times it’s a thankless task. I was so impressed today, the staff were great and obviously cared about the work they do, everywhere was so clean yet homely, and accommodating to all. I had my young children with me who were apprehensive about coming, they both thought it was great and could see their nana was being so well cared for. It’s been a difficult time for my mum, aunty and grandad worrying about nana since she developed dementia and living away it’s been hard to see the strain it’s had on them and not being able to do much to help. Knowing she’s safe and being cared for by such a great team has really helped. I just wanted to say Thank you and keep up the excellent work. Best wishes.

In a good way, they have settled my father into the nursing home and filled us with confidence that he is in a good place where he can recover and get him ready to come home from his injuries.

My mum has been a resident at Calway House for the past two and a half months. All the main areas are bright and light and Mum has a good size room on the ground floor with access to the gardens. She finds the food very good ( she is a retired cook herself) and the staff very kind and friendly. She very much enjoys taking part in activities. I have noticed a huge reduction in her anxiety levels as the weeks have gone on, and indeed my own as I believe she is being very well cared for. The staff are relaxed but diligent and when Mum had a minor problem they dealt with it sympathetically and professionally. Very highly recommended.

Sue Harvey
Sue HarveyJob Title:Registered Manager

I like to think of Calway House as being like a little village community. Every resident is a valued member of our community and every resident milestone is a collective cause for celebration. Whether it’s a 99th birthday, Mother’s Day or Christmas, we mark every special occasion together.

I absolutely love working in care – and I’ve often said that I will never retire from this job, I will just move in to Calway House as a resident!

This role has given me the opportunity to make a real difference – I can ensure that all of our residents have a brilliant quality of life, and support and motivate the staff to create a really happy home for those in our care. Old certainly doesn’t mean past it, and pandemic or no pandemic, I get to help Calway House residents live their lives to the full.
