Calway House has a strong community reputation for residential care and, since opening, has been rebuilt as a larger, modern home in order to support more people.

Care workers support an active lifestyle and clients are welcome to personalise their surroundings. Residential rooms are arranged in groups of 15, with each group having access to its own living and dining areas.

Staff keep up-to-date with each individual's care needs and are trained in dementia care, for which there is a dedicated 'Petals' dementia care suite. The home has also achieved Platinum status under the Gold Standard Framework for palliative care (2017).

From the very first meeting and welcoming from the manager, we have been impressed and happy in the knowledge that Dad is safe and well cared for at Calway House. The staff and communication are excellent and the home is always clean. We would have no hesitation in recommending Calway to others.

My father was taken into Calway after a fall on 1st December 2023. Calway have been fantastic, kind, thoughtful, accommodating and extremely helpful. My mum went into Calway and I've had no worries having my dad now live there. I wouldn't want him anywhere else. He's looked after extremely well and
he's very happy there and settled in brilliantly, couldn't have wished for a smoother transition from home to a care home environment.

Was excellent caring for my husband. The building is bright and airy and feels active. The staff are all unfailingly kind, patient and caring. The food is good and there are plenty of activities. I would recommend Calway House to anyone and feel very grateful for their care.

My sister lived at Calway House from 2015 until 2023. All the staff there were very kind to her and in the last years took care of her every need. As the nearest family member, I was welcomed to Calway House at any time. The staff are very professional and they are warm, friendly and engaged with their
work.

There are no words to express our gratitude to all the staff at Calway House for looking after our uncle, so much love and care they gave to him. We will always be grateful to them all and for looking after the family until his passing.

Dad went into Calway House Care Home in December 2021 with a broken pelvis. The colleagues there helped Dad through his injury and over the months enabled his rehabilitation. He lived a really content life and when old age finally came for Dad, the staff in Calway were incredible. Rather than have him
go into a faceless, unpleasant hospital, they nursed him in his own room. The care and love they had for Dad was incredible. We couldn’t have found a better place for Dad for his last eighteen months of life and we honestly can’t find the words to thank the staff for the care and dignity they showed Dad in the days leading to his passing.

My mother has been a resident at Calway House Care Home since December 2022. She is settled, safe and happy. The care staff are amazing, kind, sensitive and caring but also have fun with Mum! The whole team, from management to the housekeeper, are all very supportive to the family and care plans are
updated with the family every month. The care home endorses a homely environment and is very aware of individual needs. I have been able to put Mum's own furniture in her room which makes it very homely and familiar for her. I cannot thank Calway House enough.

Mum has been a resident of Calway House Care Home for four years. She loved her room and when she contracted Covid and had to move from Spruce to Laurel, which has more nursing care, the staff again were so good and kind in helping her with the move and settling in. I cannot praise the whole team at
Calway enough, the staff always encouraged Mum to join in activities and when it came to end-of-life care, not only were they so caring and kind to Mum, they were a huge support to me. I would highly recommend Calway for the care given and the wonderful staff, I will miss them all.

Our mother went into Sycamore wing about a year ago as her dementia advanced and her care needs accelerated. We needed somewhere safe, caring and secure (as she had managed to escape from a previous care home and was found by a member of the public wandering along a busy road).
My experience of Calway
House Care Home was a good one. Mum's room was clean, airy and light and opened onto an enclosed garden. Whenever I visited, usually unannounced, the staff were always welcoming and never intrusive. Mum always appeared well cared for and was obviously happy there, particularly within the care of Sycamore. Unfortunately, two falls after she ended up in hospital. We were however able to get her home for end-of-life care in December. The staff on Maple gave me a room for two nights so that I could join my family as we gathered around Mum's bed as her struggle with dementia ended. Many staff came to say goodbye to Mum, many of whom obviously had a real affection for her. Thank you Calway.

As soon as you walked in the door there was a welcome by the staff. Carers were very caring and approachable. Senior staff kept you informed of any problems. The activities team arranged daily a wide range for everyone to join in. End-of-life care was performed with dignity and by very caring staff
who made mum comfortable and sat with her when no one was visiting. Would recommend Calway for the care given and pleasant staff.

Following the unexpected death of my mother, I had to rapidly find suitable dementia care home for Dad. Calway House staff proved excellent in sensitively assessing Dad's needs and ensuring efficient and swift admission to the home. Dad's dementia means he cannot easily suggest or request what he would
like to do and never has any recall of what he has done. The staff have gently tuned into Dad's interests and abilities and engaged him in a wide range of enrichment activities. He is happy at Calway House, and his entire bearing and demeanour exhibit the high quality of care he is receiving. I am delighted with Calway House.

My partner's Mum was admitted to Calway House from hospital for rehab care. The care staff have been very supportive to both my partner and her Mum ensuring she had all her needs addressed and she remained comfortable in her last few days. In addition, my partner was supported and cared for throughout
her mum's stay (to the end and beyond).
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for the help and support given throughout her stay. It was very much appreciated. Special thanks to all staff in Sycamore.

When I could no longer cope with dads needs I started looking for a care home, luckily I was given the name and number of Calway House by a friend. Calway staff helped dad and me through the last chapter of dads life. Calway staff went above and beyond to help us even at the sad end of dads life the
staff on Maple wing were kind professional and above all personal, they made dads last days feel like he was surrounded by friendship and care and gave dad the dignity everyone of us would like to have at the end of our lives. Thank you, Calway.

My mother and father went into Calway House Care Home in July 2019. They were given two adjacent rooms - a sitting room and a bedroom. My father passed away in May 2020 and Mum remained at Calway House until she passed on 14.06.2022. The staff went above and beyond to ensure their comfort and well-being
at all times. My sister and myself were given access to a room to allow us to be close to Mum for five days prior to her death. Words cannot express how grateful we are for this.

My mother has stayed at several homes over the years as her dementia progressed and Calway House Care Home has without a doubt been the best. It has been a great comfort to know that she was in such good care. I also appreciated the phone calls from Calway House to inform me of any change in her condition
or medical treatments. My brother and I are extremely grateful for the love and care extended to my mother.

My brother-in-law first came to Calway House Care Home spending a day a week in the day centre, which he really enjoyed and gave my sister a break. He then had weekly respite and finally became a permanent resident. It was distressing to see such a clever man's deterioration but he was always treated
with respect and care. He felt secure and was well looked after. The management staff went out of their way to help us. They were so sensitive and never made us feel that we were a trouble. Thank you everyone - we will miss you.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.770)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.770) out of 10 for Calway House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 21 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.770 for Calway House is calculated as follows: ( (188 Excellents x 5) + (47 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 239 Ratings = 4.77
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Calway House is based on 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 92 registered maximum number of service users is 18.4, which has been reached with 21 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Registered Manager

I like to think of Calway House as being like a little village community. Every resident is a valued member of our community and every resident milestone is a collective cause for celebration. Whether it’s a 99th birthday, Mother’s Day or Christmas, we mark every special occasion together.

I absolutely love working in care – and I’ve often said that I will never retire from this job, I will just move in to Calway House as a resident!

This role has given me the opportunity to make a real difference – I can ensure that all of our residents have a brilliant quality of life, and support and motivate the staff to create a really happy home for those in our care. Old certainly doesn’t mean past it, and pandemic or no pandemic, I get to help Calway House residents live their lives to the full.
