Calway House has a strong community reputation for residential care and, since opening, has been rebuilt as a larger, modern home in order to support more people.

Care workers support an active lifestyle and clients are welcome to personalise their surroundings. Residential rooms are arranged in groups of 15, with each group having access to its own living and dining areas.

Staff keep up-to-date with each individual's care needs and are trained in dementia care, for which there is a dedicated 'Petals' dementia care suite. The home has also achieved Platinum status under the Gold Standard Framework for palliative care (2017).

Lovely new building. The rest is just being updated. Problems with car parking. Staff are very friendly and approachable. Tension within activities staff.

Calway House is well run by the manager. As with all care homes, more staff would help. It would also be better if staff spent a little more time chatting with residents instead of form filling on the computer. The staff now look very unprofessional not in uniform and hard to recognise for residents.
Car parking is an issue and rooms need repainting, especially as the new block shows them up!

Calway House is a well run, caring nursing home that has been my Mothers home for five years. She has been treated with respect and dignity by the excellent staff and the home is light and airy with good facilities.

My mother has resided at Calway House for 3 1/2 years (residential care). Over Christmas, her health deteriorated quickly and dramatically. The staff were kind and supportive, making the transition to nursing seamless. They looked after the whole family in a kindly, professional manner which was greatly

Most importantly staff are kind and thoughtful. The dignity of residents is considered at all times. Special activities are consistently on offer for dementia patients if appropriate and their interests and abilities are properly taken into account. Food is good, with efforts made to provide favourite
items and drinking is well monitored. Staff try to provide a homely atmosphere and encourage residents to input and offer an opinion.

Very early days but first impressions are good. There is a prompt response when help is called. Staff are attentive and considerate. They come up with their own initiatives to make life easier. There is a positive attitude to any comments or suggestions.

My uncle moved into Calway House in September 2015 and my aunty in January 2016. It was important that they were able to stay together. My aunty has dementia and is in the secure unit but my uncle can visit her whenever he wants to. They are very well cared for and are both happy. They have lovely en-suite
rooms. The food is very good. My uncle joins in the activities that are organised.

My mother entered Calway House nursing wing two and a half years ago. In that time Calway House has nursed her back to being able to live a far better standard of life than before. She requires a sodium drop every other night, its this level of nursing care, that enables her to enjoy her family who
visit regularly. The staff, management, nurses and especially the health car assistants make it as homely as possible also the activity staff arrange numerous things to provide stimulation including trips out. On top of everything the hairdresser (in house ) keeps them looking good.

My mother was at Calway House for 16 and a half years, first in the Residential wing and for the last 20 months in the Nursing wing. Both she and I have had the most wonderful relationship with all the staff, admin, nurses, carers and cleaners alike, and the care, warmth and understanding they have
all showed us throughout has been exemplary. My mother died peacefully on 28th January in the best possible place she could be at the end of her life. I cannot thank the staff enough. I never had a moment's concern over her care and would recommend the home to anyone.

Coming into a care home was not a wanted or expected situation and the idea distressed the whole family, we were very pleasantly surprised at our experience so far. My father has been treated with dignity and care, encouraged to maintain normal life and we have been made very welcome.
We have had one
concern with one weekend but when our concerns were raised the manager addressed it and replied immediately. Virtually all the staff are excellent and those that are not stand out massively.

Job Title: Registered Manager

I like to think of Calway House as being like a little village community. Every resident is a valued member of our community and every resident milestone is a collective cause for celebration. Whether it’s a 99th birthday, Mother’s Day or Christmas, we mark every special occasion together.


I absolutely love working in care – and I’ve often said that I will never retire from this job, I will just move in to Calway House as a resident!


This role has given me the opportunity to make a real difference – I can ensure that all of our residents have a brilliant quality of life, and support and motivate the staff to create a really happy home for those in our care. Old certainly doesn’t mean past it, and pandemic or no pandemic, I get to help Calway House residents live their lives to the full.
