Prince Alfred care home provides residential and respite care, with a team devoted to enriching residents’ lives every day. The gardens, overlooking beautiful Mystery Park, are a standout feature - designed by staff and residents after winning an internal Sanctuary Care competition. Raised beds allow residents to grow fruit, vegetables and flowers, which are used for cooking and flower arranging. Recently, residents enjoyed carrot cake baked with home-grown carrots, giving a real sense of achievement.

Activities include barbecues with family and friends, cocktail hours, and pampering in the hair salon. Residents play an active role in home life, with one running a book club and another leading residents’ meetings as ambassador. Community connections are strong, with visits such as Liverpool Museum’s House of Memories project, sparking conversations about local history.

Dining is a highlight, with two chefs preparing everything from roast dinners to authentic curries, plus home-baked cakes and biscuits for afternoon tea. One chef recently competed in Sanctuary Care’s Masterchef contest. Families are welcome anytime and can stay connected through a private Facebook page.

Proud to be veteran-friendly

Prince Alfred has achieved Veteran Friendly Framework (VFF) status, supporting the practical, emotional and social needs of the armed forces community. The VFF is a collaboration between Royal Star & Garter, Royal British Legion and NHS Veterans’ Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA).

Mum was diagnosed with dementia in 2013. She was able to stay in her own home, for a while, but residential care became a necessity at the end of 2018.
Mum was a resident at Prince Alfred between March 2019 and June 2022, when she sadly passed away.
Although the progression of dementia was always
there in the background, moving into Prince Alfred brought Mum back to life again. She seemed to enjoy life again, and the family are convinced it was the standard of care given, in a supportive environment that was responsible for this reawakening.
Whilst they aren't the lowest cost provider, the care given and interaction with the residents is excellent.
The measures put in place throughout Covid (and to the present day) have been exemplary and proactive, ensuring the residents are protected above all else.
I wholeheartedly recommend this home if your loved one needs residential care.

Mum has been at Prince Alfred Care Home since March. This was supposed to be a short respite but due to unforeseen circumstances, she is still there.
I could not be happier with the care she is recieving.
Prince Alfred has a real family feel.
Mum has had so much support and the team could not have
been more supportive to her and myself as this was a big change for us all.
I could not recommend the home enough and that is down to the whole team and how amazing they all are always a smile and nothing is too much.
Mum always tells me how amazing the food is, they have activities and trips and she loves having her nails painted.
So thank you the team Prince Alfred for all your care and support.

We as a family are greatly disappointed in Prince Alfred. They excluded our Mother from her home without notice because she had fallen twice in two months. Our Mum is in her 90s and was left homeless by this terrible action. She was forced to spend a whole month in a hospital ward with no home to return
to. This was not an ideal situation to put a frail 90 yr old into. A little more care and thought from the care home would have saved our Mum so much distress. After all, why call it a care home if care is refused.

Disappointed. Following a fall, my grandmother was refused to be allowed to come back to her home. The manager refused the help and support from social workers, doctors, and nurses who all felt that she could go back if a low profile bed and crash mats were in place (all provided by the hospital). This
was refused.
This led to her being trapped in hospital causing a severe deterioration of her dementia over the last 5 weeks.
This was supposed to be her home. We placed our trust in management to be there for her.
She is safe now in a new home that was more than happy to provide the new bed and mats as offered by her care team.
Truly shocked and disappointed that this can happen. The management wants no one here who has any needs, anyone who might require more effort. More interested in pushing family to give her home top reviews. Well, I hope she takes this into account next time she decides to throw out a 97-year-old lady from her home for falling out of an inappropriate bed.
Reply from Fae Doherty, Senior Marketing Officer at Prince Alfred Residential Care HomeThank you for taking the time to review our home, at Sanctuary Care and Prince Alfred Residential Care Home we take your feedback very seriously and know that a formal complaint has been raised by yourselves.
Unfortunately, there are times when a home must make the difficult decision that they can no longer maintain a placement for a resident due to the nature of their care needs or these needs changing. These decisions are not taken lightly, and the safety and wellbeing of the residents are at the heart of any decisions made.
I know our team are in contact with you to resolve this. Best wishes, Fae.

When I visit my mother, I book a slot and visit in a ‘pod’ in the garden. In truth, it is a lovely conservatory in the garden. It is a lovely environment in which to be able to chat with my mother and she enjoys looking out at the flowers and wildlife. I get little opportunity to see members of the
team now with not being able to go into the main building. I want to express my grateful thanks to them all for all that they have done, in very difficult circumstances, to look after not only my Mum but the other residents. Without the manager and her team showing such care and compassion and keeping routines running smoothly, lives for the residents would not have the contentment that they enjoy due to their kindness and hard work. I travel a long way to visit my mother and the team always do their best to accommodate my requests to visit. I count my blessings that my mother lives at Prince Alfred.
Reply from Fae Doherty, Senior Marketing Officer at Prince Alfred Residential Care HomeThank you so much for your kind words about our home and team, it is wonderful to hear how pleased you are with their care and kindness. Our visiting pods really have been a blessing during this time - and we are so glad you feel it's comfy and homely.

When we visited the home before Mum moved in, my daughter and I were very impressed with the home. Our Mum has recently moved into Prince Alfred. Mum is still a little unsettled with the move, however, the staff and management are doing everything they can to help with the transition, not only for Mum
but for us, the family.

I have been a resident at Prince Alfred since April 2021 and wish to submit a review of my personal experience of staying at Prince Alfred for respite care and can report my satisfaction is very high. Visitors to their family members do not get to see the inner working of the care home and how well
all members of staff treat and look after the residents. I reiterate how satisfied I am with the care I am receiving at Prince Alfred.

My mum has been living at Prince Alfred Care Home now for over 2-years, and I am delighted with the standards of care she receives. All the carers are totally committed to doing their best and you can see this is more than just a job to them, they really do connect emotionally with the residents. I
know my mum is happy there, which makes me happy. I have peace of mind knowing my mum is being looked after really well.

This care home is the most welcoming, caring, thoughtful care home out there. They take care of everyone to their fullest potential with their kindest hearts. They are always making sure everyone is comfortable and happy. There is not a single bad word you could say about this home. It is so homely
and friendly you could trust them with anything. They make sure the people who live there and visit are as satisfied as they can be. They treat everyone with kindness and respect. Could not fault them.

I absolutely love the staff at Prince Alfred. Both my mum and dad were in their care and they were looked after as if they were family. Nothing was too much for the whole team. Always welcomed with a smile and an update on what’s been happening in the care home. The rooms were spotless as were all the
facilities. The cinema room was so good and it felt like you were actually in the movies.

My nan is receiving such a high standard of care tailored to her needs. My nan is always telling me about the activities she has joined in. My nan has settled in well and has made friends. Whenever I visit or phone my nan she is always cheerful, telling me about the tea party she had just attended with
matching teapots and cups. The lunch club, she looks forward to and is always joining in new activities daily organised by the activities lady and staff. The manager and staff go over and beyond. The home is always immaculately clean and my nan loves her room which overlooks the park. I could not have choosen a better home for my nan. She has put weight on and is always saying how lovely the food is. It gives me reassurance to know my nan is having such a lovely time while receiving excellent care. Always a party or something to look forward to. Thank you to the manager and all the staff for looking after my nan in a lovely safe friendly and caring environment.

When I and my brother were told by doctors in 2019 to find a care home for mum, we had no clue about what to do or expect. After spending a few days visiting care homes in Liverpool we were pretty frazzled by everything. Some of the places we visited were truly awful. For the family, this is an ordeal
too. And then we found Prince Alfred. Sitting in the reception area we heard the sound of laughter and singing. An afternoon singalong was on for the residents. That was it. I looked at my brother and we both knew we'd found the right place for mum. She moved in in March 2019 and she hasn't been happier since she fell ill with dementia. The care from the nurses and staff is superb. The place itself feels homely. It is clean and bright. Mum feels safe and is surrounded by people her own age that she shares the day with. For me, she is a different person from the mum we grew up with but she is alive again - which I cannot thank Prince Alfred enough for.

So impressed with the service and dedication of the team here, they have ensured that my aunt's welfare has been at the forefront throughout the pandemic. They have continued to keep spirits high and ensured she has not felt alone or unwanted. Throughout the lockdowns, they have kept family members
informed and they have never been anything but polite and helpful when dealing with our constant calls for updates. Thank you so much.

My Aunt has been in the care of the Prince Alfred team for several years. I have witnessed a very heartfelt and caring approach towards my Aunt and other residents when I have visited. They have a very appropriate tactile approach to my aunt, making sure the 'little things' are met, brushing her hair
to the style she has always preferred, thought is always put into her outfit every day, they even ensure she has her earrings in! The staff always give a good handover to myself and my family of what has occurred in-between visits. They manage her medication, her moods, her wants and needs effectively and thoughtfully. We visited many homes before we made our choice, on entering Prince Alfred and the first impressions we viewed we thought this was the right place for her. Years later we absolutely know we made the right choice.

My Nan was incredibly reluctant to move into a residential home, however, as soon as she entered Prince Alfred's she hasn’t looked back since! She is so much happier. She loves her room and looking over the park, she’s eating better than ever- she couldn’t want for anything. The staff have been amazing
throughout the pandemic and have ensured her safety and well-being when family haven’t been able to visit. We’re always able to contact her, never a problem. They always go above and beyond for her and have been so considerate to my family throughout. As well as all the essential care she receives, they take time to do her hair, even paint her nails, they’re always organising celebrations and parties and activities to keep her and other residents busy. They’re very attentive and spend a lot of time talking to her and sharing laughter which has been essential to her happiness. I couldn’t recommend somewhere more highly! You can put your trust in Prince Alfred's staff, they’re exceptional.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.853)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.853) out of 10 for Prince Alfred Residential Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.878 for Prince Alfred Residential Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (197 Excellents x 5) + (23 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 222 Ratings = 4.878
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Prince Alfred Residential Care Home is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 50 registered maximum number of service users is 10, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
