Wonderful home could maybe do with more staff but the staff who are there are brilliant very friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble for them. Mum is very happy there and is well looked after. Plenty of activities for those who want to join in, and any concerns are dealt with, with care and
compassion, staff always keep us relatives up to date with what’s going on. We couldn’t be happier with Mum's progress since arriving at the home.

On 06.02.2023, my brother pressed the button to get the attention of the staff because he wanted to do a number two. My brother is bed bound so he can't get to the toilet, it was 45 minutes before anybody came. When a person came, my brother told them he want to do a number two, this person went off
to tell someone else and it was 20 minutes before someone came to him. To me, this is not good enough but I do appreciate that the staff are very busy. Also, my brother is on oxygen, what if there had been something wrong with the oxygen?
Reply from Julie Caygill, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Carr Gate Care Home

We are very sorry your brother had this experience. This is not the experience we would expect our residents to have and this has been addressed with the team on duty and the wider team to ensure this does not happen again.

The resident is being looked after very well, both for his nursing care needs and for his care home needs. The staff are friendly, always attentive to his needs and inform me of any issues that may arise. The rooms are clean and tidy and the care home is to a good standard.

Mum was fast-tracked to Carr Gate from hospital after a massive stroke. She spent seven weeks there being very well looked after by all staff from cleaners to head nurse. I even had a meeting with the head chef, as he wanted to make sure he was doing all he could too! Any issues were quickly resolved,
anything that we needed for Mum was there within five minutes! Mum was unable to speak, but she still managed to get across what she needed and staff always on hand to help. The only thing thing I think could be improved, is changing carpets to hard flooring for ease of cleaning. We'd like to thank all the staff for their hard work, during a very stressful time for us.
Reply from Julie Caygill, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Carr Gate Care Home

Thank you for your generous feedback. Our staff team are pleased they have been able to support you and your loved one to such a high standard. Your feedback around the type of flooring has been listened to and we do change flooring where this is required for people's needs, however, some people still prefer carpet. We will continue to work with residents to meet their needs and preferences. Thank you for taking the time to pass on your thanks and appreciation.

Mum came here for a short stay while care providers were put in place after six weeks in hospital.
Every single person we met in Carr Gate Care Home showed no end of their support, kindness and caring ways. Nothing was too much for them and didn't have to ask twice for anything.
Huge thanks and gratification

Super management team at Carr Gate with highly experienced and qualified nursing team who have an excellent understanding of my mum's nursing needs. The care staff are considerate, cheerful and most importantly kind - which is the most important attribute of all. As with all care homes, it would be
wonderful if funding would allow for carers to spend an hour or two sitting and chatting with residents in their rooms every day, but this is just not possible under the UK’s health and social care system. Mum is happy at Carr Gate and has told me numerous times that she never wants to leave. I have no hesitation in commending the entire team.

Can only comment on limited visiting due to Covid 19. We have been happy with the service received to date. Mum is settled and happy in the care at Carr Gate. Mum expresses concern at lack of staff on weekends compared to weekdays.
Reply from Julie Caygill, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Carr Gate Care Home

Thank you for your feedback, and we are delighted to hear that your Mother has settled into Carr Gate well. I would like to offer my assurances that the staffing numbers deployed at the weekend match those of during the week, as we recognise that our Resident’s needs are the same, whatever day of the week it is. Your Mother may notice that the home is less ‘busy’ on the weekends, as GPs, Physiotherapists and other Allied Health Professionals do not routinely visit on a weekend, further to this, some of our Ancillary Staff, such as the Home Administrator and Maintenance Operative do not routinely work during the weekend period. If you would like to discuss your concerns further, please don’t hesitate to contact the Home Manager on 01924 828105.

Our mum lived at the home from August 2019. The home provided a family atmosphere with a high level of care and dignity from all staff. Facilities included a good mix of activities and entertainment. Rooms of a good standard. The home also offered a good line of communication to the family during challenging
times (COVID-19). Would definitely recommend it. From the family of a late resident living in the residential dementia unit.

My mother spent 2 months at Carr Gate, in which time she developed severe pressure ulcers on her heels which were not documented, treated or cared for by the staff at Carr Gate.
During her last few days at Carr Gate, mum deteriorated rapidly and was bed-ridden.
It's my belief that staff did not turn/change
mum's position over the 48 hours of her being bed-ridden as no turning charts were completed by staff.
Reply from Diane Kerwin, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Carr Gate Care Home

In your letter of complaint, you advised that you did not believe that pressure ulcers can form to the severity that your Mother has experienced in a 48 hour period. The safeguarding officer who was investigating liaised with the District Nursing team and they confirmed that this tissue damage was not evident when they last assessed your Mother two days before she became acutely unwell. Your Mother developed pressure damage to her heels when her health deteriorated rapidly which compromised her skin integrity, this was exacerbated when she became bed-bound and was unable to manage her own positional changes. You advised us that you do not believe that staff undertook positional changes. I do not substantiate that your Mother did not have any positional changes carried out over a 48 hour period as the pressure damage would have been extensively worse to all bony prominence on her body if the staff had not managed her positional changes.
As part of learning lessons from any concerns raised, we strive to make improvements, as part of my investigation, I discovered that the staff did not record positional changes on a supplementary document, despite undertaking these care interventions. These findings will be shared with the team in team meetings so that care provided can be evidenced moving forward.
I hope this provides further clarity but of course, should you wish to gain an alternative opinion, you may choose to seek advice from the tissue viability nurses if you need to further ascertain the mechanism of injury of pressure damage.

Current Review Score: 7.9 (7.870)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 7.9 (7.870) out of 10 for Carr Gate Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 3 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.5 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.389 for Carr Gate Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (14 Excellents x 5) + (22 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 36 Ratings = 4.389
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.481 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Carr Gate Care Home is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 65 registered maximum number of service users is 13. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 13 = 0.231
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
