Derwent Care Home is situated in the Derwent Valley, within the hamlet of Low Westwood immediately to the west of Hamsterley in County Durham. The River Derwent flows at the bottom of the valley, over which the care home benefits from wide-ranging and stunning views.

The care home offers residential care, dementia care and respite care. The modern and spacious home, located over three floors, has forty-four purpose-built and attractively decorated en-suite bedrooms.

Each floor has its own dining area and lounge spaces where residents can choose to relax. Residents and their visitors also benefit from a bright and uplifting conservatory, leading onto a secure balcony, with beautiful views over the valley.

In the local village, there is a regular bus service that commutes to nearby Consett, Newcastle city centre and the local Metro Centre which is one the largest shopping centres in the northeast. The village also has a post office, hairdressers and barbers, church (who the home work very closely with), a community centre and an Italian restaurant.

The GP surgery is situated along the road from the care home and they offer resident’s a weekly ward round as part of their service.

Very helpful and welcoming staff who are always on hand to support families and their resident.


Always a great experience and my grandmother always speaks highly of the friends staff and how helpful they are especially with a cup of tea in the afternoons.

I have been a resident at Derwent Care Home for 8 years now, in this time I have gained a lot of confidence in myself and made lovely friends. I enjoy going to weekly bingo with residents, and enjoy the activities. I also enjoy good crack with the staff, they are always approachable when needed with

My mother-in-law has been to Derwent for a period of respite care and loved it. We were impressed by the lovely atmosphere and how much the staff care about what they do, everyone was very welcoming, the management were very helpful and informative. My sister has been living in the home since November 2024. Firstly on a temporary basis and has been made permanent in January 2025. She settled in from the start and has been very happy and content in fact I haven't seen her so happy for a lot of years. I believe this is due to the companionship of
the staff and their attention have contributed immensely to her wellbeing. I myself have found the staff outstanding and any little niggles however small have been sorted straight away. The Manger is very approachable and friendly and is always available to chat to me about my sisters welfare, also her Assistant is very helpful. All the staff are exemplary and are an asset to the company.

I would like to thank all the staff for the care and kindness that they have provided for my dad during a recent illness. They have looked after him so well, and have encouraged him to eat and given him multiple food choices to tempt him when he had no appetite.
They have also tried to keep his spirits
up, and have been very sympathetic as well, and have kept me well informed about his progress.

My father has been in Derwent for over a year now and I cannot praise the home enough, as a family we were apprehensive about putting him in care but he has thrived. My grandma has been in Derwent Care Home for a year now & has settled in really well. She has a great relationship with all members of staff who are all very caring, sympathetic, happy & professional in their roles. Meals at Derwent are excellent with great choices to chose from. My grandma loves joining
in with activities within the home, which are amazing, going out for walks, bingo, games, arts & crafts, having herself a dance when singers come into the home. The home is very clean & tidy, Can't thank all the staff enough for the care my grandma receives would highly recommend Derwent Care Home to anyone.

Mam had a fall at Derwent, badly cutting her head and elbow. As the fall happened during the night, I wasn't on hand to take responsibility, but the care she received was wonderful. A staff member accompanied mam to the hospital and stayed with her during the night until her discharge. Staff have also
been so kind to mam regarding the follow on care, arranging district nurses and paramedics when required. Each member of staff I have had contact with has been informative and respectful, especially the member of staff who has made temporary arrangements for mam to receive support from the appropriate GP practice.
