Derwent Care Home is situated in the Derwent Valley, within the hamlet of Low Westwood immediately to the west of Hamsterley in County Durham. The River Derwent flows at the bottom of the valley, over which the care home benefits from wide-ranging and stunning views.

The care home offers residential care, dementia care and respite care. The modern and spacious home, located over three floors, has forty-four purpose-built and attractively decorated en-suite bedrooms.

Each floor has its own dining area and lounge spaces where residents can choose to relax. Residents and their visitors also benefit from a bright and uplifting conservatory, leading onto a secure balcony, with beautiful views over the valley.

In the local village, there is a regular bus service that commutes to nearby Consett, Newcastle city centre and the local Metro Centre which is one the largest shopping centres in the northeast. The village also has a post office, hairdressers and barbers, church (who the home work very closely with), a community centre and an Italian restaurant.

The GP surgery is situated along the road from the care home and they offer resident’s a weekly ward round as part of their service.

The changes to my grandma since arriving at Derwent Care Home have been outstanding. My grandma is once again living and not just existing. My grandma is involved in daily activities and weekly trips out to the local coffee morning and afternoon bingo. I cannot thank the staff enough no job is too big
or too small. The home is always looking and smells lovely. There is no other place I would wish my grandma to be.

It was my aunt's 100th birthday and I was told everything would be arranged by Derwent. We arrived and decorations had been put up. The table was beautifully decorated with an amazing cake with my aunt's name on it. We had a really delicious Sunday Lunch with her then went into the lounge where a carer
had something special on T.V. for her. The staff went above and beyond all expectations and my aunt and all the family had the most wonderful time.

Since my husband's admission (due a stroke) to Derwent in January 2024 I can honestly say that I feel I couldn't have chosen a better place for him to be cared for. I initially chose a home that was close by for visiting but soon became very aware that there are so many other factors to be considered.
Derwent is an exceptionally clean and tidy home welcoming from the very beginning. The food is good and every care is taken to provide to the patient's personal preferences. This I have found in abundance from all the staff at Derwent from management down to all those you really see for example the kitchen and laundry staff. My husband and I have always been shown respect, love and care they are always helpful, friendly and compassionate and I would recommend this care home to anyone looking for a care home for a loved one.

Derwent Care Home - the name says it all. The staff care very much about their residents. They are all treated with dignity and love in very pleasant surroundings. It is reassuring for relatives and friends to know that their loved ones are in a safe place and will be well looked after. The food is
good and the facilities excellent. They showed great kindness to my husband and I and my family appreciated the care given to him. Our sincere thanks to everyone.

My mam was admitted on May 24. I was not happy with the whole admission process. The day of her admission, she was greeted by staff at the main entrance, then staff directed us to the top floor by telling us to take the lift and gave us the code for the lift and go to top floor, your room is up there.

The four days she spent there she had 08:00 tablets given at 11:15 am and 12 pm my dad questioned why she was getting her tablets at that time, he said shortage and staff sickness?. We took her down to the ground floor where we could sit outside with her but were told by staff she couldn't have her lunch there, she had to go back to the top floor. There was no stimulation for her on the top floor. We asked staff what activities are there for those on the top floor we were told nothing really, they just wander up and down the corridor. My dad went in and saw the DM giving her morning tablets again at 11:55 pm. Not surprisingly he took my mam out of the home that day, no one challenged him.

Mum has been a resident at Derwent for 4 years and has been cared for with a great deal of care, respect, and compassion. Knowing that she is in a safe environment is invaluable to the family. The staff do a fantastic job, in what can be very challenging circumstances at times. The new Manager has implemented
lots of changes since coming into the post, all of which are improvements to the care home environment, both internally and externally. Currently the ‘home’ is undergoing major transformations to make it even more ‘dementia friendly’, for all residents/carers/visitors, which is a huge bonus.

My friend is happy and well cared for by friendly and experienced staff. Her meals are of good quality and are well presented. Her room is clean and her laundry is always returned appropriately. The building itself is clean and is always heated well.

Staff always appear caring, polite and welcoming occasionally appear to be short-staffed but do make time to meet resident's needs. The menu at times is repetitive with limited choices. I feel at times staff are not kept updated on residents on going medical problems.

Recently we had the opportunity to attend a session with a singer in Derwent Care Home. She was fantastic with the residents and families, smiling and encouraging all to join in. She also had a really good voice with great choice of songs for us all to sing along to. I want to tell you and whoever organised
it how much we appreciate having the opportunity to make special memories today and remember the old ways we used to enjoy our time together. Looking around I think we were not the only ones. I also wanted to say how brilliant the staff were and how they enthusiastically encouraged and supported people to come and join in, they too joined in with so much compassion and care with dancing and singing, pride and emotion! Let's have more of this, it is invaluable therapy and the normalisation of the strange, frightening world our loved ones live in. What an event! What a staff team. Thank you from a very tearful but happy and lucky daughter.

I am very happy my grandmother is at Drewent. She has the best view and a comfortable room. The facilities are lovely and the activities if she wanted to join in are varied. The staff are amazing and friendly and dedicated to their jobs. I don't know where we would be without them.

As a nurse and an ex home manager, I can not express the outstanding care delivered on a day-to-day basis to our Mam. The staff act on any concerns they may have with health and well-being, seeking medical advice in an efficient timely manner. Our Mam has been there since November and they already know
her very well, they are a kind and very caring team providing a high standard of person-centred care. The atmosphere is warm, friendly and homely and Mam says she's happy there and feels safe.

My aunt has been cared for in this home since October 2021. During that time she has been more than happy with the care, love and attention she has received. All the staff have treated her with kindness and dignity for which we will always be grateful. The cleanliness has been second to none. Her food

Visited following a closure due to the pandemic. The staff are excellent, kind, caring and very helpful. The communication since the start of the pandemic has been excellent. We are updated via social media and a newsletter on events that my mother-in-law has taken part in. She is very happy in the
environment she lives in which means her son and I are settled and not worried.
