Derwent Care Home is situated in the Derwent Valley, within the hamlet of Low Westwood immediately to the west of Hamsterley in County Durham. The River Derwent flows at the bottom of the valley, over which the care home benefits from wide-ranging and stunning views.

The care home offers residential care, dementia care and respite care. The modern and spacious home, located over three floors, has forty-four purpose-built and attractively decorated en-suite bedrooms.

Each floor has its own dining area and lounge spaces where residents can choose to relax. Residents and their visitors also benefit from a bright and uplifting conservatory, leading onto a secure balcony, with beautiful views over the valley.

In the local village, there is a regular bus service that commutes to nearby Consett, Newcastle city centre and the local Metro Centre which is one the largest shopping centres in the northeast. The village also has a post office, hairdressers and barbers, church (who the home work very closely with), a community centre and an Italian restaurant.

The GP surgery is situated along the road from the care home and they offer resident’s a weekly ward round as part of their service.

I and my mother were greeted on arrival and put at ease as we had to do lateral flow tests, we were assured that this is to keep the residents safe. We were then sent to the back entrance and told to put PPE on, this was so we didn't have to go through the home. We put PPE on in a little foyer before
being allowed in the home. I think this is a great setup as the residents are put first and aren't put at any undue risk. The visitors' room is right next to the rear entrance. The staff brought my dad down, it was great to see him as I haven't seen him for 9 months. Thank you!

Thank you to the brilliant staff who deserve more recognition for the fab care they provide. During the covid pandemic, it has been heartbreaking as a family not being able to visit my Grandma. However, the biggest comfort to us was knowing that she was being well cared for at Derwent Care Home. Having
visited regularly before the pandemic, we could trust and know that our loved one was receiving person-centred care by the brilliant staff who act in her best interests and go above and beyond, also maintaining a good relationship with my Grandad her husband.

The care home provides for my mother's every need. In what has been a difficult year, the staff have been excellent. I have been able to video call every with, and the activities have managed to keep my mum entertained and mainly alert.

I love that Mum is here. As an ex Age UK CEO I understand how to review care and have nothing but praise for the home, in particular, the staff are lovely, helpful, friendly and kind. The food always looks lovely. Rooms and communal areas clean and warm. Mum's dementia has progressed but feels confident
she is in the best possible place, getting the best possible care.

The care home is excellent in every way. Good care, plenty of activities, excellent staff, friendly home from home atmosphere.
If I have to end up in a care home, this would be top of my list.
I could not fund a care home that provides as much care as this home does.

Visited the home in May as looking for respite. The manager was helpful and supportive which gave me confidence that this was the right facility for my mother. She is now a permanent resident. The staff are welcoming and caring but also very professional in their approach. The home is very clean and
comfortable with excellent facilities to support my mother's care. My mother is safe, has made friends and is well looked after.
Knowing that my mother's needs are being met means that the stress we were under has greatly reduced.
I have no hesitation in recommending Derwent to others.

My mother transferred here from another home because of its closure. She was three months short of her hundredth birthday which was a big move for her and the staff were very kind and made her most comfortable.
She enjoys her time and she is becoming used to her new carers which is a great comfort
to me.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.842)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.842) out of 10 for Derwent Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 57 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 56 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.842 for Derwent Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (597 Excellents x 5) + (59 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (6 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 673 Ratings = 4.842
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Derwent Care Home is based on 56 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 45 registered maximum number of service users is 9, which has been reached with 56 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
