Derwent Care Home is situated in the Derwent Valley, within the hamlet of Low Westwood immediately to the west of Hamsterley in County Durham. The River Derwent flows at the bottom of the valley, over which the care home benefits from wide-ranging and stunning views.

The care home offers residential care, dementia care and respite care. The modern and spacious home, located over three floors, has forty-four purpose-built and attractively decorated en-suite bedrooms.

Each floor has its own dining area and lounge spaces where residents can choose to relax. Residents and their visitors also benefit from a bright and uplifting conservatory, leading onto a secure balcony, with beautiful views over the valley.

In the local village, there is a regular bus service that commutes to nearby Consett, Newcastle city centre and the local Metro Centre which is one the largest shopping centres in the northeast. The village also has a post office, hairdressers and barbers, church (who the home work very closely with), a community centre and an Italian restaurant.

The GP surgery is situated along the road from the care home and they offer resident’s a weekly ward round as part of their service.

I would like to thank all the staff for the care and kindness that they have provided for my dad during a recent illness. They have looked after him so well, and have encouraged him to eat and given him multiple food choices to tempt him when he had no appetite.
They have also tried to keep his spirits
up, and have been very sympathetic as well, and have kept me well informed about his progress.

My nana has been a resident in this care home for a few months now and she's has had best care I could ever ask for, every member of the staff are fantastic and very helpful.
My nana is now thriving in her new environment and I feel very comfortable in the knowledge that she is safe and well.

My father has been in Derwent for over a year now and I cannot praise the home enough, as a family we were apprehensive about putting him in care but he has thrived. The staff are wonderful the home is well presented, clean and there is always something going on, he loves it. There is always support

My grandma has been in Derwent Care Home for a year now & has settled in really well. She has a great relationship with all members of staff who are all very caring, sympathetic, happy & professional in their roles. Meals at Derwent are excellent with great choices to chose from. My grandma loves joining
in with activities within the home, which are amazing, going out for walks, bingo, games, arts & crafts, having herself a dance when singers come into the home. The home is very clean & tidy, Can't thank all the staff enough for the care my grandma receives would highly recommend Derwent Care Home to anyone.

Mam had a fall at Derwent, badly cutting her head and elbow. As the fall happened during the night, I wasn't on hand to take responsibility, but the care she received was wonderful. A staff member accompanied mam to the hospital and stayed with her during the night until her discharge. Staff have also
been so kind to mam regarding the follow on care, arranging district nurses and paramedics when required. Each member of staff I have had contact with has been informative and respectful, especially the member of staff who has made temporary arrangements for mam to receive support from the appropriate GP practice.

I have known my friend my whole life, and since coming into Derwent, she is now thriving. She is involved in daily activities and loves going to house hairdresser's. All the staff are lovely and welcoming. The home is always spotlessly clean and tidy. I cannot fault the care she receives would recommend

This is my first involvement with Derwent Care Home, and my first impressions are all positive, despite my mother-in-law's initial reluctance; she seems to be settling in well. The staff have all been friendly and caring and always at home. She has a comfortable, airy room, good news all round.

This was the first time I sourced Respite care for my mother. I chose Derwent Care Home as it had good reviews, and a good CQC score. I also visited it prior to making my decision. The home is a good size, well maintained, and very clean. The staff are well presented, friendly and professional. I
was very nervous at first, but after visiting, and speaking with the staff and residents, I knew mum would be well taken care of, and she was.

My mum has been in Derwent Care Home for about 4 years. Since an unsettle period last year with staff and management changes things have greatly improved. The moral in the staff team appears to have picked up and there is a brilliant care team, and the atmosphere in the home and relationships with residents,
staff and family are lovely. The staff know my mam really well support my dad and me so much. I am kept informed and my requests are always dealt with effectively and timely. The home environment is always clean and safe.The activities have been brilliant especially the singers brought in. Hopefully this will continue and other Activity Coordinator will be appointed soon.

I find Derwent Care Home a very pleasant and friendly place for my mam. The staff showed genuine care and interactions with my mam and other residents. The home is always very clean and tidy. Totally satisfied and confident that my mam receives the best care at Derwent. Thanks to all concerned.

I visit the home nearly everyday to see my mother in law. I cannot tell you how happy and content she is, she absolutely loves it. The staff are wonderful, and she is often in awe of the care and attention she gets. I never worry when I leave her as I know she is safe and happy. The home is always very
clean and tidy as are the staff. They make her any food she wants as she is a very fussy eater, however, it is sometimes not hot enough for her. She would go mad if she knew I was writing this. She is no bother and never complains. Thank you all.

Mam moved into the home in September last year. We still have a few ups and downs with her but overall she is happy to be here. The staff look after mum really well and we as a family feel much better knowing mum is safe and cared for.

The carer and attention my dad has received over the last few months in particular from the warm friendly staff at Derwent Care Home has literally brought him back to life. After a time in hospital we thought he only had a matter of weeks but thankfully that has not been the case, and whilst his dementia
is worsening he is brighter and seems content that I can only be down to the care he has received. Thank you.

I think the entertainment lady is so lovely, she takes my sister to Bingo etc and always has the time to talk to us and explain what my sister has been doing. The floor staff are also very nice and helpful. I cannot comment on the manager because I have never met her and friend and I come in every week.

Called in unexpectedly on our way back to Birmingham from Edinburgh. Our friend was in the dining room having dinner. We were offered a cup of tea in the conservatory while waiting. The staff are very friendly and there is a lovely atmosphere in the care home. The home is very clean and bright. Our
friend is quite settled now and enjoys being there. She gets her hair done once a week and likes the singing activity.

My mam has been in Derwent Care now for over 12 months and I feel very happy that she is being cared for here. Staff are friendly and helpful, and her room and the whole place in general are kept very clean and smelling good. Quality meals are provided as well as numerous activities for residents to
take part in.
