Generally happy with the care dad receives. The staff take time to get to know him and tailor the care accordingly. Minor concerns about the inconsistency of activities on offer, this is due to unavailability of staff, particularly at weekends. Food seems good and plenty of variation. Facilities starting
to show their age although maintenance staff are excellent. Non-care staff (chefs, reception, housekeeping) all show care and compassion to residents. Management often invisible.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Reviews Team at Ferndown ManorFirstly, I would like to start by thanking you for leaving feedback for Ferndown Manor. I am pleased to read you have been generally happy with the care provided to your dad and that you feel the staff take time to get to know him. This feedback will be greatly appreciated by the team. I would to thank you for raising your concerns about the inconsistencies in the activities provided. I would like to reassure we will take this feedback on board and we will review the activities schedule. To us, it's very important and we want to ensure we are providing consistent activities as it's important for the residents. We will also review the facilities of the home in the coming weeks and look to make improvements where needed. I am pleased you mostly feel positive about the home and once again thank you for your lovely feedback and the concerns you have raised. I hope you will soon see the improvements where needed. Best wishes.

Huge thanks to the managment team and all your brilliant staff (including the chefs and catering staff) who took care of my husband whilst he stayed with you for respite during September. He hasn't stopped talking about how wonderful everything and everyone were - so much kindness came his way making
his 'holiday' a real pleasure, he was very reluctant to leave. This all helped our family and myself to cope with my hospitalisation knowing that he was safe, happy and so well cared for in such a beautiful home from home. Please relay our heartful thanks to all.
Reply from Robin Hill, Reviews Team at Ferndown ManorMany thanks for your lovely comments. It was lovely having your husband with us and he certainly did settle in at Ferndown Manor, not at all concerned when his stay was extended to allow you time to get back on your feet. We hope to see you both again soon. The Ferndown Manor team.

A very welcoming rest home, with a lovely atmosphere. The staff are always happy and efficient, everywhere clean and tidy. My mum came out looking better than when she went in. The food was good (including the cakes!) and well received. Her only gripe was being woken up at 22.00 for her medication -
she's used to taking it at 20.00.
Reply from Reviews Team, Reviews Team at Ferndown ManorThank you for taking the time to comment on your Mum's stay at Ferndown Manor, she did say she enjoyed her stay and might return on another occasion for a break, we look forward to welcoming her again! The Ferndown Manor Team.

I have really had a good experience staying at Ferndown Manor Care Home. The level of care has been first-class. Social activities were really enjoyable as I usually do not attend any when I am at home. I shall miss the company and staff and hope to come for respite again.

Absolutely pleased with the package of care received by my father over the past year. Even as he lost physical capacity he was treated so well. The social side of this care home is second to none. All the staff are so kind and friendly. Safe, clean, bright environment with a lovely secluded garden.

From the moment my husband moved into Ferndown Manor I knew I had chosen well. He was always kept neat and clean as was the home. He had clean white sheets and towels and the basin and toilet were spotless. The staff were caring and considerate of the gentleman he was. He enjoyed the food, and on occasion,
we ate together. Nothing was too much trouble. He enjoyed the activities the entertainment staff organised, always coming up with new ideas tailored to him. I couldn't have chosen a better place for him to end his life, surrounded by caring people in his own room overlooking the garden. Not only did they care for him but for me too. They included me in his life and were so compassionate when he passed.

This was a good experience for my partner having not been in respite care before. He was very well cared for in the two weeks he stayed. The nurses were amazing, very reassuring, and kind to him. The only problem with the TV not working properly is this is an item he likes to watch, my 1 suggestion
is that a satellite TV would be a better option as there is more variety of programs.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Reviews Team at Ferndown ManorThank you very much for taking the time to write a review for Ferndown Manor and for your kind comments regarding our nursing team and the high standard of care provided for your partner during his recent respite stay. We apologise for the inconvenience with the TV not working correctly and we are pleased to confirm we are currently in the process of purchasing new smart TVs to replace the existing ones. We hope that this will enhance your partners experience at Ferndown Manor should he stay with us again.

My friend was a resident at Ferndown Manor for only a matter of a few weeks and lately received end-of-life nursing care. She was treated with dignity and kindness. This same level of care and kindness was also extended to me by the staff when she passed away on Sunday afternoon, nothing was too much
trouble for them. Although it was only a short period I would not hesitate to recommend Ferndown Manor. As well as a very caring staff team the home is beautifully decorated and maintained, giving you a feel of home as soon as you walk through the door.

My Aunt came to Ferndown Manor 4 years ago. For the whole time she spent there she was very well cared for with a great deal of respect and patience by all the staff. Sadly she passed away just before Christmas but the care she was given during her last couple of weeks was exceptional - all the carers,
nurses and members of staff were so caring and kind to her and allowed her to pass away peacefully and with dignity. Ferndown Manor has a warm and caring atmosphere which is evident from the moment you step through the door. All the staff I met were always so kind to me and they were wonderful with my Aunt who could, at times, be challenging. She enjoyed the food there and the occasional activities she took part in - particularly trips out on the minibus.
Having lived independently on her own up until she had to move into the care home, it wasn't easy for her to adapt but all the staff gave her the respect and space she needed.
Reply from Robin Hill, Reviews Team at Ferndown ManorHi Vicki, thank you very much for taking the time to leave us feedback about your Aunts and your experience over the years at Ferndown Manor.

When my father entered Ferndown Manor with dementia we were very concerned about him and how frail, withdrawn and disinterested he had become. He could barely walk and had decided to stay in bed all day and his interest in food was non-existent. Due to the wonderful specialist care he has been given
by all the staff on Talbot, and indeed throughout the home, he has amazingly got his old spark back again. Within weeks he had gained strength and due to the tailored nutrition was eating again in small amounts which gave him the strength to get back on his feet.
We are more than delighted with Dad's progress under Ferndown Manor's expert care. From initial talks with managers to the amazing nursing staff on Talbot (every single one of you!) to the wonderful activities staff, housekeeping and the lovely receptionists, Ferndown Manor is truly an 'A team' We would highly recommend it to anyone wanting top-quality care for their loved ones.
Reply from Robin Hill, Reviews Team at Ferndown ManorHi Ashley, It was wonderful to see the improvement in your Dad's condition during his time at Ferndown Manor. As we all said, it was a positive and hopeful time for the staff and your family to see him engaged and enjoying life and experiencing some quality time once more.

My father-in-law has been at Ferndown Manor since December and I cannot praise everyone highly enough for their total professionalism, expertise and friendliness. This isn't just care, it's genuine care. People who love their jobs and it shows in the way they are with the residents treating everyone
with patience, kindness and respect. Dad has regained an interest in taking part in activities, he is gently encouraged with a range of meals and he has flourished under the care of all the Talbot staff. To add to this the support for our family has been amazing, communication is excellent and the standard of the facilities are second to none. Thank you all so much.

My mum has been in Ferndown Manor for one year.
Sadly, she passed away peacefully.
I cannot praise the staff for the care, kindness and support given to Mum and the care and support shown to her family enough.

kitchen staff, maintenance.

Overall, I was very satisfied with the care my mother received at Ferndown Manor. Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.717)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.717) out of 10 for Ferndown Manor is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 33 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 33 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.717 for Ferndown Manor is calculated as follows: ( (291 Excellents x 5) + (86 Goods x 4) + (12 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 389 Ratings = 4.717
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ferndown Manor is based on 33 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 75 registered maximum number of service users is 15, which has been reached with 33 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

I joined Ferndown Manor in 2021. Before I joined Care UK I worked as a Home Manager for several care homes, and before that, I worked as a District Nurse Manager for 20 years.

I decided to join Care UK as the company was highly recommended and its values reflect how care should be delivered and how I would want to be cared for.

In my role as Home Manager, I want to ensure the home remains a happy, safe place where residents thrive, and the team is proud to work. I want to ensure the highest standards of care are maintained. To succeed in this role, you need to be a good listener, be empathetic, have strong leadership skills, and be a good role model.

Walking around the home first thing in the morning is my favourite part of my job as it gives me an opportunity to greet every member of staff and residents. I also love to see the atmosphere when residents are enjoying positive participation in fulfilling activities.

My biggest professional challenge so far has been taking a home from an Inadequate CQC rating to Good.
