My mum has been in Ferndown Manor for one year.
Sadly, she passed away peacefully.
I cannot praise the staff for the care, kindness and support given to Mum and the care and support shown to her family enough.
All the staff are fantastic, friendly team - management, carers, activity staff, housekeeping,
kitchen staff, maintenance.
I would recommend this home (and it was my mum's home) to anyone, especially for residents with dementia.

Overall, I was very satisfied with the care my mother received at Ferndown Manor. The staff and carers were all very friendly and caring and treated my mother with respect and dignity - they appeared to be very fond of her. A special mention must go to the "activities team", who worked so hard, with
what appears to be unlimited enthusiasm, to engage and include every resident in the wide range of activities provided each day.

Sadly, my father passed away at the care home recently.
His care prior to and leading up to this event has always been excellent despite his sometimes challenging behaviour.
All of the staff are lovely, and I have always felt that Dad was in safe hands.
I would definitely recommend Ferndown Manor,
and in fact, it was recommended to me by a friend.

I can’t say thank you enough to the whole team at Ferndown Manor.
Mum’s journey into care hasn’t been easy and every day has brought about new challenges as Mum and everyone supporting her has had to adjust to her needs.
Having a caring outlook but more importantly flexible approach has made things
so much easier.
Needing care impacts everyone not just the person in need of care and I have found everyone very supportive, no question is too daft, no request for information is withheld and Mum has at all times received the very best of care again thank you.
The facilities are excellent and the rooms clean and modern in all aspects and the welcome is always warm and friendly.
Mum has always been social and enjoyed her food and making new friends and she continues to do so at Ferndown Manor.
Communication outwardly is excellent and it reassures the wider family that she is being loved and cared for.
You are an amazing team.
Reply from Robin Hill, Reviews Team at Ferndown ManorThank you.

My aunt was a resident at Ferndown Manor for almost three years.
None of our small family live locally but Dorset was where she wanted to stay, so we have had to rely on the care of the excellent staff to look after and support her when we were too far away to visit regularly.
My aunt was very contented
in the time she was there and spoke highly of the staff and their kindness.
We were always kept well informed about her welfare which was much appreciated.
The home is exceptionally clean, light and airy, with nice fittings and decor. There was always a friendly reception and a welcoming environment.
The weekly activities are amazing! Plentiful and varied, I was very impressed the number of outings that took place too, almost weekly! Animal visits were always enjoyed too, she loved those.
Her clothing was very well-laundered and cared for.
All the staff I have ever spoken to or met were extremely kind, respectful and patient.
Highly recommended.

I stayed at the care home in Ferndown for two weeks of respite from 16th-31st August 2023. This was the third time I had chosen to stay at this particular care home. There is such a welcoming and friendly atmosphere that you are put at ease straight away. The staff are very approachable and would deal
with any request, however difficult, straight away. Meals were interesting and varied with plenty of choice. For those who wished there were various activities and trips out provided.
I enjoyed my stay as I was able to rest and catch up with some reading. My family were able to come and visit whenever they wanted, it was pleasant and peaceful.
Thank you, it was just what I needed. Thank you to all the excellent staff.

Every aspect of my initial discussion about my husband's respite was very caring and professional. All the staff in Ferdown Manor were kind, and caring and did an excellent job throughout his two weeks respite. I enjoyed visiting him and was welcomed by everyone. I will have no hesitation in asking

My mum came into Ferndown Manor for respite after being in hospital. It was not her first time and the staff welcomed her back like an old friend and got her settled with minimum fuss. In the two weeks that she stayed it was clear that the care she received improved her mental and physical health and
enabled her to return home and manage on her own. I cannot fault the lovely, friendly team and I know that, when she needs help again, Mum will not want to look anywhere else.

My husband arrived at Ferndown Manor for nursing care until we had everything in place at our house. It became clear after one week that he was deteriorating. He was cared for very well, and I and the family shared nights with him from then on. All staff were very helpful in helping me to still get
him home if possible. Recommended private caring companies etc, while continuing excellent end-of-life care. All very good. Helped us to get him home.

My 84-year-old father went to Ferndown Manor a year ago this week.
He has gone from needing round-the-clock care for several months to the point where we started taking him out of his room for the first time in months.
Slowly his round-the-clock care was removed, and the home dealt with hiccups and
issues with patience and compassion.
Every time I visit, I am met by caring, compassionate and happy staff who take a genuine interest in all the residents; it is very clean and kept to a high standard.
Recently, I was told that my father has improved so much he has moved to a more independent area.
I am certain their quality of care has played a huge part in his achievement.
I am not an expert on standards or types of care homes, but from what I have learnt about Ferndown Manor is that I can honestly recommend them to anyone in a similar position to what we were.

Visited three days each week. Found all staff very helpful in every way. I realise, in a perfect world, we would have one member of staff per each client and that is not economical. I particularly liked the idea of one way in and out. On the whole, well handled and well done! Have not answered the section

Ferndown Manor has exceeded my expectations. The staff are not only sympathetic and caring, they are enthusiastic and fun! All the staff (and many other residents and their families) have become friends and every visit is enjoyable. My dad's medical needs are specific and required additional staff training,
which the management team were willing to endorse and provide. Now my dad is in the best health he has been in since his accident and I am so grateful to everyone at Ferndown Manor for taking care of my dad and supporting my family. We can now look forward and smile again!

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.741)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.741) out of 10 for Ferndown Manor is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 35 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 35 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.741 for Ferndown Manor is calculated as follows: ( (316 Excellents x 5) + (87 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 413 Ratings = 4.741
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ferndown Manor is based on 35 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 75 registered maximum number of service users is 15, which has been reached with 35 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

I joined Ferndown Manor in 2021. Before I joined Care UK I worked as a Home Manager for several care homes, and before that, I worked as a District Nurse Manager for 20 years.

I decided to join Care UK as the company was highly recommended and its values reflect how care should be delivered and how I would want to be cared for.

In my role as Home Manager, I want to ensure the home remains a happy, safe place where residents thrive, and the team is proud to work. I want to ensure the highest standards of care are maintained. To succeed in this role, you need to be a good listener, be empathetic, have strong leadership skills, and be a good role model.

Walking around the home first thing in the morning is my favourite part of my job as it gives me an opportunity to greet every member of staff and residents. I also love to see the atmosphere when residents are enjoying positive participation in fulfilling activities.

My biggest professional challenge so far has been taking a home from an Inadequate CQC rating to Good.
