I cannot say thanks enough to the staff that looked after my grandmother. At first, it was very difficult for her, but with the kindness, help, care and love from the team here, she began to relax and enjoy her time here; the activities, the company and the friendships she made. She had one particular carer that she took to very well. So thank you all for what you did for her and an extra special hugs and thanks to the carer my gran bonded with. On behalf of the family, thank you.

My father was terminally ill with brain cancer and spent his last couple of months being cared for by the superb team at Ferndown Manor. By team, I include everyone from the highly professional nurses to the duty carers to the 1-1 care support assistants who spent entire 12-hour shifts with him to the cleaning teams who kept the premises spotless, to laundry workers and all the people who usually go unmentioned in reviews. The staff showed exceptional kindness, patience and humility at all times despite my father's occasionally challenging behaviour caused by his illness.

I had the opportunity of seeing at close hand exactly what happens during a 24 hour day as I spent many weekends staying in the home. I witnessed at first hand how professional, compassionate and well-managed the staff were, Emergencies were dealt with in a calm but effective manner and my father's needs were supported 24/7 despite the pressures and demands made on hard-working but clearly passionate people.

My dad was admitted to Ferndown Manor in December 2019 to spend his last few weeks. However, such was the care, compassion and love shown by the staff, my dad made a recovery and was able to enjoy another two and a quarter years of life. Apart from the excellent care, during his time at the home, my dad loved the activities that were laid on including dancing with the help of a carer, holding a live owl, taking part in the armistice celebrations and lots more. I regularly took dad out for trips to the shops and rides in the car and he was always welcomed back with open arms by the staff and other residents who always took an interest. My dad also enjoyed spending time sitting by the reception desk, chatting to the receptionists about what was going on, as if he was still in his old office. Most importantly, my dad never lost his dignity at any moment. In summary, I highly recommend Ferndown Manor and would not hesitate to recommend this home.

Both my parents with differing medical conditions have spent the past two weeks in Ferndown Manor on a respite contract, which we will now make permanent due to their care needs. I can highly recommend all aspects of Ferndown Manor but the overwhelming one is the level of care and compassion they receive from the management team and all the lovely staff, and the level of great communication we receive as family members.

My Grandmother came to Ferndown Manor for a respite stay of seven days. She came home on the sixth day.
Superficially Ferndown Manor is excellent. The staff are very friendly to visiting family. The Home is cleaned and maintained to an impeccable standard.
However, my Grandmother did not receive the personal care that was agreed that she required during her pre-admission assessment. She was very anxious not to trouble the carers because they were so busy. Family members repeatedly asked for assistance to be offered to her, but this was not done within a reasonable length of time. As a result, my Grandmother became increasingly distressed and came home early.

I appreciate that Covid-19 has added significant pressure to the healthcare sector. However, as a former Health Care Assistant of over 8 years who worked in a high-end care home, I would not consider Ferndown Manor to be a 'luxury' care home. I agree with the CQC's current assessment that Ferndown Manor "Requires Improvement".

He came to Ferndown Manor just over two weeks ago after a 14-week stay in hospital. His care has been first class. It's a pity Ferndown Manor staff didn't work in the hospital, as his care would have been far superior to that which he received. A big thumbs up to all the staff at Ferndown Manor.

My husband entered Ferndown Manor from the hospital for end of life care in the final steps of Parkinson's Disease. He was treated with gentle, loving care by all the staff and kept spotlessly clean and comfortable. When the family and I visited, we were treated with great kindness and sensitivity. We could not have asked for better treatment for the end of his life.

My mother has benefitted from the excellent facilities and professional, pleasant care staff at Ferndown Manor. I would have no hesitation in recommending attending Ferndown Manor for either respite care or moving in as a permanent resident. The care team have breathed my mother as an individual, tailoring her care to her specific needs.

I feel restored after respite care here and its connection to everyday life and how better to manage it. I am no longer anxious every day about problems and I have developed a strong feeling about how to cope with everyday things. Importantly, I am realistic about what I can do and am more respectful of my age and the limitations it presents.

My 89-year-old mother was in need of urgent respite care after my father was unexpectantly admitted to the hospital. Her mobility had been limited to a wheelchair. The staff at Ferndown Manor responded fantastically and care arrangements were made extremely quickly. We were able to visit the modern, exceptionally clean and comfortable Home at Ferndown Manor and the General, Business and Clinical Managers were very attentive to mum’s needs – planning her care with detail and purpose. Throughout her stay, the staff were kind and focused on mum’s needs and, as we had hoped, rehabilitated her to walking with a frame when she was strong enough to manage. She enjoyed her stay of two months, for which we are very grateful.

My elderly parents moved into Ferndown Manor for a 14 week period following a substantial leak in their bungalow. This was a very upsetting and stressful time for them. From day one, they were welcomed into the home and have been cared for in an excellent manner. They were lucky to be able to stay together in a lovely large twin bedded room with an ensuite and lounge area. During their stay, they have has a few health issues. These were dealt with quickly and efficiently. All the staff are doing a wonderful job.

From our initial contact with Ferndown Manor, we were made to feel very welcome and from then on, the care and communication from all the team was exemplary. Sadly my mother-in-law passed away in their care and at all times to this moment, we were treated with the utmost care. I cannot recommend the care home highly enough and cannot thank them all enough.

Mum was admitted to Ferndown Manor very quickly after being discharged from hospital. Mum was unable to manage at home on her own. I rang Ferndown and they had a room available. I couldn't have found a better care home in my mind. The staff went above and beyond to make Mum's last few days as good as possible (only 2 weeks) before she passed away. Excellent all round. Mum never experienced any activities.

Difficult to say as the home has been closed to visitors for some time due to both lockdown and infection, and my sister and myself are not on a website so cannot do Zoom. Have had one to tone phone talks which have been very helpful, though at times confusing. Feel sister is well looked after, staff are caring and always cheerful, and if there is any change in sisters condition, myself and other members of the family are informed promptly. Feel sister is safe, warm and well card for.

Having spent a great deal of time in the home with my wife, I experienced firsthand all the activities. The nurses and carers are angels without a doubt. The chef must have come from The Savoy. I live in hope that I will find a cobweb somewhere in the home so that I can have something to complain about.

My mother left the hospital in August 2020 and was admitted to Ferndown Manor with many health issues including bad delirium. Within 2-weeks with the constant support and care shown to her by all the wonderful nurses and other staff, her delirium disappeared and I began to see my dear mum return to her normal, happy and friendly self. She began to love living there and constantly told me how happy she was. Unfortunately, she passed away just after Christmas. Her end was extremely peaceful, and my husband and I were at her bedside with two of her wonderful carers and nurses. I'll never forget the quality of care shown to Mum and us at all times, which has helped us so much in coming to terms with losing her. Thank you again, Ferndown Manor.

Sara Muslin
Sara MuslinJob Title:Home Manager

I joined Ferndown Manor in 2021. Before I joined Care UK I worked as a Home Manager for several care homes, and before that, I worked as a District Nurse Manager for 20 years.

I decided to join Care UK as the company was highly recommended and its values reflect how care should be delivered and how I would want to be cared for.

In my role as Home Manager, I want to ensure the home remains a happy, safe place where residents thrive, and the team is proud to work. I want to ensure the highest standards of care are maintained. To succeed in this role, you need to be a good listener, be empathetic, have strong leadership skills, and be a good role model.

Walking around the home first thing in the morning is my favourite part of my job as it gives me an opportunity to greet every member of staff and residents. I also love to see the atmosphere when residents are enjoying positive participation in fulfilling activities.

My biggest professional challenge so far has been taking a home from an Inadequate CQC rating to Good.
