Revolving doors of carers on the dementia floor so no empathy apart from a few focused carers. Shocking Management and communication.

Caring experience for my mother with dementia promised so much but delivered little, especially over the Covid period. My Mum was a resident for 14 months.

Reply from Samantha Debenham, Personal Assistant at Mountbatten GrangeWe were very saddened to read this review as we feel it is in no way reflective of the high standards of care, communication, and management at Mountbatten Grange, as evidenced by our Good CQC report and testimonials from other residents in the home and their loved ones. In regards to the care team, we understand how important having familiar faces and building ongoing relationships with colleagues is for all residents, particularly those living with dementia – this is why, both throughout the pandemic and during normal times, we make sure we have a permanent team working with those residents and we do not use agency staff. We would be very happy to answer any questions prospective residents and their families have about the quality of care and the lifestyle at Mountbatten Grange and are able to offer show rounds and one-to-one chats for anyone that would like to see for themselves why we’re one of the top-rated care homes in the area.

Very well run care home with excellent staff.
My wife has received excellent care and likes the carers that look after her.
Her room is comfortable and well equipped for safety and with an ensuite facility.
There is a good programme of activities for the residents.
The meals are excellent. Good
nursing care is provided.

My 98-year old mother spent four weeks in respite at Mountbatten Grange having suffered both mentally and physically whilst living independently during lockdown. The care and attention she received during her stay were exemplary with attentive, committed staff in well-designed and attractive facilities.
This included close monitoring of my mother's welfare at all times, prompt attention in the event of any problems, excellent management of her medication and regular efforts to involve her in the activities of the home. I was kept fully informed of my mother's progress throughout her stay and the marked improvement in both her physical and mental state when she left the home is testimony to the efforts of the team.

I spent 12 days at this care home in respite care. Due to the virus, I could not join in activities but was isolated in my room. The service I received was very good, I think full residency would be really worth it.

Our first experience in respite care and we've clearly started with a winner! From my initial contact all the staff have been warm, kind, knowledgeable and smiley. I had no hesitation leaving Mum in their care, she settled in very happily and very quickly. We're both looking forward to her next stay
there. Exceptional!

Both my mother and father are at Mountbatten Grange. The quality of the home and care received is very good, although expensive. Whilst I am overall very pleased with the home I have two issues:
1. I think the home is slightly understaffed. This is based on comments from my father, who says at times
he is left unattended.
2. Both my parents receive nursing care. I would expect a monthly update on their condition, especially my mother who has Parkinson's disease and has been debilitated by a stroke. The local doctor makes weekly visits but we do not get any feedback unless we ask. She recently had a change of medication but we were not informed.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, PA to Marketing Director at Mountbatten GrangeThank you for your review, we’re pleased to hear that you’re very happy with the care and quality of the home and to see your good scores, particularly for the team, dignity and support the home provides. I would like to reassure you that we are not understaffed in any way – when you visit the home you will, of course, see lots of the care team, as well as other colleagues, interacting with residents, but there are also lots of other team members that you may not see as they are assisting or working with residents on a one-to-one basis in their rooms or other areas of the home delivering care. We always ensure every resident is safe and well cared for, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. At Mountbatten Grange, we also offer monthly review meetings which the family are welcome to attend – if this is scheduled for a day or time that is unsuitable, we will, of course, do our best to reschedule for you. We respect the resident's wishes where they are happy to involve family we will give regular feedback. Families are also welcome to visit and chat with the GP during their weekly visit.

Mum wanted to be at home, of course she did, but if you cannot look after yourself at home what a lovely place to call home. Staff were friendly, loving and caring. The place was clean, welcoming and smelt nice, her room was lovely and a good size. We tried with mum in a different home at first but
it didn't feel right. Once she was in Mountbatten Grange we all felt much happier. You have to choose the right home for your family and we know we did. Thank you.

Mountbatten Grange is a very friendly and supportive care home. My Mum has settled in as well as can be expected given her dementia, and we enjoy visiting her there much more than we used to when she was living alone. This is primarily because we now know she is safe where she is, and well looked after.
The staff at the home are helpful and dedicated, and responsive when we have any questions about Mum. The only recent disappointment has been not being able to eat in the dining room with Mum, but as this is due to a request from residents to be just residents at meal times this has to be respected.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, PA to Marketing Director at Mountbatten GrangeThank for you taking the time to write your review – we are incredibly pleased to see your good and excellent scores, and hear how well your mum has settled into Mountbatten Grange. Thank you for your understanding regarding mealtimes – as you know it is the resident’s home, and as we had overwhelming feedback that they wanted main mealtimes in the dining room to be just for them, we, of course, respected their wishes. However, if you would like to join your mum for a meal, please just let us know if advance – we would be happy to arrange for this to be served to you both in your mum’s room, and (especially for larger events such as birthdays), don’t forget we also have a private dining space that can be booked for gatherings of family and friends to enjoy time with loved ones. We also offer tea, coffee, and delicious cakes and snacks in the home’s café which you are also welcome to enjoy with your mum at any time.

Christmas day lunch with Mum was the best we have had for years. She ate all three courses and chatted away happily. This may seem normal, but for the last year, all she has eaten are sandwiches, so to see her enjoy a balanced, healthy meal and enjoy it was something that will stay with me for a long
time. Thank you to all the staff at Mountbatten Grange for making this happen.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.896)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.896) out of 10 for Mountbatten Grange is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 38 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 38 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.896 for Mountbatten Grange is calculated as follows: ( (391 Excellents x 5) + (41 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 434 Ratings = 4.896
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Mountbatten Grange is based on 38 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 72 registered maximum number of service users is 14.4, which has been reached with 38 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

I started my career in care in 2001 and joined the Care UK team in 2006. What really stands out for me about Mountbatten Grange is its homely atmosphere. Family members can visit whenever they want and are always guaranteed a lovely welcome.

My goal at work every day is to make sure every resident is happy and enjoying a stimulating, fulfilling life. I think the only way to achieve this is by making sure that each resident receives truly individualised care from people who’ve invested time in really getting to know them, their needs and their experiences. It’s also important to me that family members are happy with the care that their loved one is receiving. Getting great feedback from relatives is very rewarding for everyone on our team.

Outside of work I enjoy being outdoors, taking walks, going for bike rides and generally spending time in the countryside. Many residents enjoy spending time outdoors too, so we like to get out and about as much as possible, in the local area and also to the coast.
