This attractive and professionally managed care home rated ‘Outstanding’ in March 2020 by the Care Quality Commission, has been supporting the local communities of Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire and Dacorum for over ten years. Established and purpose-built with an excellent reputation, St Pauls Care Centre offers quality nursing, residential, convalescent and dementia care in an accessible but peaceful location.

An award-winning home manager and deputy manager have been leading the home since the day it opened, and a stable and skilled staff team provide responsive, compassionate, high-quality care to meet the changing and individual needs and expectations of each resident. The home does not use any agency staff and new staff are often recruited through direct referrals. The family ethos and the warm relationships achieved are greatly valued by both residents and visitors, and make St Pauls Care Centre a special place to live. The home is strongly connected to the wider community.

Comfortable bedrooms have their own en-suite shower, toilet and washbasin and are located in smaller unit living areas. There is a wide choice of day rooms including lounges, separate dining areas, a cinema room, hair salon, quiet lounge, and pub.

The charming garden is a favourite with residents, with its spacious areas for them to relax or socialise with friends and relatives.

The facilities have been designed to enhance resident care and quality of life, to optimise cleanliness and help minimise the spread of any infections; this includes wood effect flooring, hand washing facilities in every room and the use of hand gel dispensers throughout the home.

Found the care centre clean, tidy, fresh and friendly. It was nice to see a safe and secure place for my cousin to stay in. Her room was a good size and with a window onto the world outside. Lovely staff, who were keen to help us. Lots of things to do. A cinema! Altogether, very nice indeed. My cousin
had no complaints and seemed happy and settled.

Our mum came to St Paul's in 2022. She was cared for by a fantastic team, and the staff were always letting us know how Mum was on a day-to-day basis. Our visits were always met with cheerful, friendly staff. St Paul's is an amazing care home. We sadly lost Mum on the 4th of September 2023, and the
staff were compassionate and kind right up until the end of her life.
Two members of St Paul's came to represent the home on the day of Mum's funeral; we class them both as family.
Reply from Sarah Williams, Marketing Manager at St Pauls Care CentreFirstly, our condolences for your loss, our thoughts are with you. Thank you for taking the time to leave such a wonderful review; the team at St Pauls treat everyone with the utmost respect and always goes above and beyond to ensure loved ones are treated as family.

Firstly, the staff and cleanliness of St Pauls is exceptional. I am pleased to share my positive experience and would highly recommend this care home for any senior citizen seeking a comfortable and compassionate environment. Well-maintained and impeccably clean and friendly environment for residents.
There is always an extensive schedule of activities during the week.

St. Paul’s has delivered excellent care for my mother over the four months since she arrived. Her dementia symptoms were challenging and her prior care home struggled. The care staff at St. Paul’s showed remarkable patience, resilience and compassion, while the nursing staff liaised carefully and conscientiously
with doctors to find a medical balance to ease her distress. She is now fully engaged with the staff and activities on the unit and is very much more content. This is a wonder and such a relief to family.
This has all taken place in a light and airy, well-appointed and well-managed, purpose-built facility, where the residents are provided with good food options and frequent carer interactions and activity. Even the laundry and maintenance staff will chat and present a cheery demeanour to the residents. Family are welcomed wholeheartedly and communication is excellent, daily in person as well as through notices and regular meetings.
Reply from Laura Davey, Marketing Executive at St Pauls Care CentreWow, thank you so much for this amazing five star review. We really appreciate this kind feedback and are so pleased to hear that Mum is content in our St Pauls Care Centre. Thank you once again, your comments have been passed on to the team.

From first arriving at St Pauls Care Home in August 2023, my 98/99 year old mother has settled well. The staff are all so kind and pop in frequently to check that she has all she needs. Showers and clean clothes every day, means I can be confident of hygiene. The home is purpose-built and kept scrupulously
clean. Even though she doesn't join in, it's good to see other residents engaging in the many social activities laid on. There are no agency staff and the commitment of all from nurses, carers, cleaners, activity and reception staff is clear to see. Everyone is so welcoming. A real home from home.

My dad was discharged from hospital into the care of St Pauls Care Centre, Hemel Hempstead, in April 2023. He was 85 and had lost his mobility due to the spread of cancer into his spine, he also had Parkinson's disease which affected his memory and ability to make decisions. Dad was always treated with
respect and care, the staff at St Pauls are caring and compassionate. We couldn't have wished for any better care for him under difficult circumstances. Dad died peacefully on 2nd October and we are grateful for all that the staff did for him and the support they gave to the family in his final days. St Pauls deserves their CQC ‘Outstanding’ rating.
Reply from Laura Davey, Marketing Executive at St Pauls Care CentreThank you very much for taking the time to leave such a kind review. My mum went discharged from hospital into the care of St Paul’s Care Centre, Hemel Hempstead in May 2022. She was 94 and broke her arm following a fall. She lost her limited mobility and suffered confusion and delirium while in hospital and was very poorly when she got to St Paul’s. Slowly but surely,
with the excellent care she received from the nurses and carers, she regained some strength, but was never able to regain her mobility. I would like to say how grateful I am to St Paul’s for making my mum's last 15 months of her life so comfortable and give me piece of mind that she was being well cared for. She died peacefully last week. Thank you St Paul’s for all you did for her.

My aunt was a resident at St Pauls. We chose St Pauls based on the CQC rating and after a site visit, we immediately felt that my aunt would receive the care she deserved. We were not wrong.
All the staff from the nurses to the front desk receptionists were so friendly, professional and supportive.
The communication with us was first class. We were always informed of even the slightest changes in my aunt's circumstances. All the care staff took time to get to know my aunt, her likes and her dislikes so that they could provide the best possible care for her.
We feel so fortunate to have found St Pauls. We feel we could not have provided a better last home for my Aunt. I would also add that the GP surgery associated with St Pauls is first-rate and works extremely closely with both St Pauls and family members.

My Dad came out of hospital after 4 weeks and was very thin and had pressure sores on one of his feet. He has now been in St Paul's for a few weeks and has put his weight back on. I find the staff caring and attentive and they go out of their way to individualise patient care to get residents back to
their optimal function.

You cannot ask for better staff on the 2nd floor; everyone always says hello to you. Any problems with my mother, I am informed straightaway. The building is very clean, and the activities staff do a good job of entertaining the residents. The food is cooked according to residents' needs. I wouldn't
wish my mother to be in another home.

My dad has been at this home for nearly three years, and in that time, he has had first-class treatment by a wonderful bunch of carers. We have been kept informed about all that has been happening with him. All the staff are very polite and very helpful whenever asked for anything. The staff are very
mindful and spend time with my dad and sit and talk to him. Overall, I couldn't be more happy.

My 93-year-old father was very ill and was rapidly deteriorating. Management at home was becoming difficult for everyone. We made a considered decision in finding him a local nursing home where help was at hand. We chose St Pauls Care Centre. It provided a friendly, warm, safe and clean environment
under an umbrella of well-organised management where he was afforded dignity to the end. He was resigned to dying. He chose his moment to slip away and perhaps did so at St Pauls because he was relaxed. He was well looked after, and we were making regular visits, which will have comforted him and reassured him that everything was in order. Not many of us can hold down a conversation and entertain guests over lunch at the grand old age of 93 in a freshly ironed shirt two days before dying! Thank you so much to everyone at St Pauls.

I have only visited my friend when she was moved into St Pauls Care Centre. Over the last two years, I have visited her twice when she was rushed into hospital and in two other nursing homes. Without a doubt, St Pauls has been the most welcoming for visitors. The kindness that staff show in looking
after their visitors, the positive kindness we receive in the reception with a drink of our choice is like 'manna of heaven'! Most importantly, my friend is just a different person, she is more alert and she is eating well and I cannot thank you enough.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.877)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.877) out of 10 for St Pauls Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 42 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 42 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.877 for St Pauls Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (429 Excellents x 5) + (56 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 487 Ratings = 4.877
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Pauls Care Centre is based on 42 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 88 registered maximum number of service users is 17.6, which has been reached with 42 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
