This attractive and professionally managed care home rated ‘Outstanding’ in March 2020 by the Care Quality Commission, has been supporting the local communities of Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire and Dacorum for over ten years. Established and purpose-built with an excellent reputation, St Pauls Care Centre offers quality nursing, residential, convalescent and dementia care in an accessible but peaceful location.

An award-winning home manager and deputy manager have been leading the home since the day it opened, and a stable and skilled staff team provide responsive, compassionate, high-quality care to meet the changing and individual needs and expectations of each resident. The home does not use any agency staff and new staff are often recruited through direct referrals. The family ethos and the warm relationships achieved are greatly valued by both residents and visitors, and make St Pauls Care Centre a special place to live. The home is strongly connected to the wider community.

Comfortable bedrooms have their own en-suite shower, toilet and washbasin and are located in smaller unit living areas. There is a wide choice of day rooms including lounges, separate dining areas, a cinema room, hair salon, quiet lounge, and pub.

The charming garden is a favourite with residents, with its spacious areas for them to relax or socialise with friends and relatives.

The facilities have been designed to enhance resident care and quality of life, to optimise cleanliness and help minimise the spread of any infections; this includes wood effect flooring, hand washing facilities in every room and the use of hand gel dispensers throughout the home.

I came here for a rest and to be looked after by the best staff so well. When the hospital told me I cannot go home, I was very upset, but within one hour, I was very happy with St Pauls Care Centre and was looked after very well. I wish them happiness, as they gave me. I love you all and thank you

I visited St Pauls when it was suggested that it would be suitable for my wife's needs and was very impressed by the design of the dementia floor and the Manager and staff who I met. During the 5 months my wife was there until she died, I became even more impressed b the dedication, facilities and the
warmth showed to my wife and myself. We were fortunate to have experienced it.

My mother was given a placement in this care home as an emergency respite. When I took some of her things in, I was first told to just leave them in the foyer with no receipt. I refused, then I was told my own mother was brought there from hospital with nothing of her own. The manager didn't even know
my mother even though I spoken to her about my mother's going there. They lost her nightie, and I had to have a handwritten receipt on copy paper for the items I had taken in.
In the two months Mum has been there I have been able to see her for less than 15 mins, the first visit was taken up with getting her things signed for. The second was cut short because of the weather. I called to talk to the nurse as I needed information. The male nurse was rude as I asked questions and said he was too busy. Each time I have talked to a nurse it went badly. One nurse said with her diagnosis I doubt she even knows where she is, when I asked how she was liking it there I complained and I was fobbed off.

I understand there was a miscommunication about your mother's nightie, and it was later found on the same day - we called you to inform you of this. We often receive high praise for our care and nurse team at St Pauls, many of whom have been there for over 10 years. We will be sure to address the issues you raise with them. In recognition of the positive experience that most of our residents and relatives receive, St Pauls received a rating of Outstanding from the CQC in May this year. As per our complaints policy, our COO has spoken to you directly to address your concerns. We understand how difficult it must be to visit your mum for a short time. In line with Government advice, and working with the local CCG, we have put measures in place to protect our residents, staff, and visitors, and these measures are under regular review.

Our mother has been a resident of St Pauls for the last 2 years until her recent death. She had many challenging conditions, primarily Alzheimer’s, but the staff at St Pauls were able to deal with all of them superbly. The care and love they have shown her has been second to none and we will always
be incredibly grateful for everything they have done for her. They have also offered us as a family, constant support and maintained regular contact with us, even during these difficult times. We could not have asked for more from a care home.

This is my second comment as Dad has now sadly passed away and reviews the two-plus years he was cared for by the staff at St Pauls. Nothing has changed my view of the home and its people! They are all such caring and friendly folk. Dad was well looked after until the end and always treated as an individual;
during his time there I knew that he was safe and being well cared for. It's like a family and we have become very fond of everyone there. Definitely a place to be recommended.

My elderly mother entered St Paul's from hospital soon after Christmas, for end-of-life care. It struck me as an efficient and friendly place. Very positive and forthcoming duty nurses at all stages.
During the COVID19 lockdown, we were told that she might not have long to live. My brother and I visited
her, taking the usual precautions. She was really well looked after by the home team.
When she finally died the staff on duty that evening were more than supportive. The ensuing formalities were all done with great sensitivity.
Nothing but fulsome praise.

She was always cared for with kindness and consideration by all the staff, and although it would not have been her wish to be in a care home, she was unable to look after herself. I went into St Pauls care home to recuperate following a spell in hospital which had left me very weak. The staff were friendly and the nurses very attentive to my needs and although I didn't have an appetite, the chef produced some tempting food.
I had a pleasant ensuite room with a TV to watch if
I didn't wish to join other people in the lounge. I only spent a few days in the home before I felt fit enough to return home but would be quite happy to return there in the future should I need any type of care.

I have a relative resident at this care centre since November 2018.
The building and staff appear very good and fit for purpose. I am a little concerned about the provision of mental and physical stimulus for the residents. I appreciate the problems with limited mental capacity.
There seems to be
a lot of time set looking at the wall.

St Pauls has completely changed the quality of life for my mother. She is smiling, laughing and participating in activities. She loves her carers. Having a diploma in Adult Health Nursing and Midwifery, Yasmin is committed to excellence and passionate about ensuring that St Paul’s delivers the highest standard of care to all residents. Yasmin was promoted to Home Manager in December 2024.
