  • St Pauls Care Centre, Hemel Hempstead
This attractive and professionally managed care home rated ‘Outstanding’ in March 2020 by the Care Quality Commission, has been supporting the local communities of Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire and Dacorum for over ten years. Established and purpose-built with an excellent reputation, St Pauls Care Centre offers quality nursing, residential, convalescent and dementia care in an accessible but peaceful location.

An award-winning home manager and deputy manager have been leading the home since the day it opened, and a stable and skilled staff team provide responsive, compassionate, high-quality care to meet the changing and individual needs and expectations of each resident. The home does not use any agency staff and new staff are often recruited through direct referrals. The family ethos and the warm relationships achieved are greatly valued by both residents and visitors, and make St Pauls Care Centre a special place to live. The home is strongly connected to the wider community.

Comfortable bedrooms have their own en-suite shower, toilet and washbasin and are located in smaller unit living areas. There is a wide choice of day rooms including lounges, separate dining areas, a cinema room, hair salon, quiet lounge, and pub.

The charming garden is a favourite with residents, with its spacious areas for them to relax or socialise with friends and relatives.

The facilities have been designed to enhance resident care and quality of life, to optimise cleanliness and help minimise the spread of any infections; this includes wood effect flooring, hand washing facilities in every room and the use of hand gel dispensers throughout the home.

My experience is, I have always been happy to come here to visit my partner. He was always happy and content and treated very, very nicely. We used to join in all the activities because he just loved to sing. All the staff were lovely and friendly.

The nursing care given is outstanding, particularly by one member of the team and her presence is missed if she is not on duty. Cleanliness is very good at all times of the day and night. Members of staff, from laundry, cleaning, reception, management, maintenance to care assistants are polite, friendly,
helpful and respectful. This, in turn, creates a wonderful atmosphere.
I have recommended this nursing home to numerous people, I am very happy with the care my mother receives.

My father has lived in this home for 18months now and has received excellent care. I visit every week and have observed the staff interacting positively with residents on every visit. Staff are caring and attentive, even when residents exhibit difficult signs of their dementia.
It is not easy to remain
calm in the face of such behaviour, yet the staff are unfailingly cheerful and patient. What I like most is the way the nursing staff model good practice so that excellent care is part of the culture of the home.

I can and do visit at random times and always find my dad in good condition and very well tended.
This is a hard-working, happy place. All residents have an identity, even if they have little response.

I always feel that my husband is well cared for and is treated with compassion and dignity.
He has always been given the option to join in with activities (of which there seem to be plenty) though he chooses not to.
The staff are all friendly and helpful and kind to my husband and me.

The home was very good, staff very friendly and caring. It's a difficult job they do but they were great in caring for my wife.

The 2nd and 3rd floors are too hot, there too little ventilation in the rooms and corridors, all rooms need a fan, we had to buy one!

June and the beginning of July my lovely partner was singing. He was so very happy. Now to me he looks more poorly. I mentioned it to the nurse. She said 'Do not worry, everything is OK, temperature, blood pressure etc'. But he keeps his eyes shut all the time and that worried me.
So I asked for a
doctor to just have a look at him. Without hesitation, the doctor came. So very nice of everyone, to just put my mind at rest, because it is his dementia, nothing else.

This home is excellent. My family member spent 7 1/2 years here. It has a strong marketing orientation where the customer's satisfaction is always at the centre of its goal. This is driven by an excellent caring management team. The "hands-on" care is kind, caring and delivered with dignity at all times.
I would highly recommend this home. It is first class.

My husband has Parkinson's Disease and related dementia. His needs are complex as is his medication. The care he receives at St Pauls Care Centre is outstanding. The staff are kind, patient and always respectful. They provide a warm and welcoming environment in which I know my husband is safe and well
looked after. Thank you, St Pauls Care Centre's manager and staff.

My Mother lived at St Paul's for the last year of her life and received the best care we could have hoped for. The atmosphere was always cheerful and the staff were kind and caring. Despite having very limited ability to participate my mother was always included in the many social activities. As her
health deteriorated, the standard of nursing care she received was exemplary.
We were always kept fully informed of her needs and reasons for any treatment provided.

This is a very clean care home and the staff are very hard working and extremely polite. This is maybe one of the best care homes in the vicinity.
Everyone makes you feel comfortable and at home so to say.

My stepmother spent her last 18 months in St Pauls. She had complex medical needs and advanced dementia but the staff always did their best to keep her comfortable, safe and well.
She could be difficult but the staff displayed patience and kindness.
Her room was always clean and tidy, her pureed food
varied and good and generally the staff were thoughtful and caring.
I would recommend St Pauls to anyone looking for long term care.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.895)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.895) out of 10 for St Pauls Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 44 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 44 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.895 for St Pauls Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (461 Excellents x 5) + (50 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 513 Ratings = 4.895
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Pauls Care Centre is based on 44 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 88 registered maximum number of service users is 17.6, which has been reached with 44 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
