Our parents were welcomed into Harbour Care Centre, a well facilitated home with a caring and friendly atmosphere. They share a double bedroom which allows them to stay together, both recieving the care they require. The area is light, spacious and nicely decorated with a well managed team providing dedicated and experienced care, adjusted to each resident's needs. A robust week of activities, or a chat in the lounge with a cup of tea, good meal selection plus in-house hairdressing. The unit manager strikes the right balance of compassion and professionalism with regular updates when necessary. This provides us, as a family, the reassurance of excellent on-going care!

My mother receives excellent care at Habour Care Centre.

The staff, who are all wonderful treat her as an individual and respect her personal requirements, always happy and professional they are very quick to respond with any health changes. Mum chooses not to participate in activities but a lot is provided and I see a lot of residents enjoying activities and the entertainment the hard working entertainment lady provided.

Reply from Angus Matthew, Head of Marketing at Harbour Care Centre

Room 5/5 very satisfactory, good storage, interesting view. Dining room is good, but the meals are not very similar to the menu picture. Ground floor and entrance not very inviting. Nobody always on reception, making it not very welcoming. Staff all helpful and caring.

Reply from Angus Matthew, Head of Marketing at Harbour Care Centre

Thanks for your feedback. We are close to redecorating the ground floor and reception. Work should start soon on this. We have also had one of our receptionists leave and have struggled to replace her with a suitable candidate but we are interviewing people now.

My father stayed at Harbour care home for respite, for 2 weeks. But because he was so much happier there I decided to keep him there. It has been so nice to see him happy again.

Reply from Angus Matthew, Head of Marketing at Harbour Care Centre

That is wonderful to hear. People staying at Harbour for respite tend to come back to us again and again. For some people it is the perfect lifestyle choice for them. Many eventualy make the move permanent having made friends and got familiar with all our carers and nurses.

Dad has been here for almost 2 years. The care he has received has been excellent. The staff are kind and considerate and have always been there when he has needed them. It is a well-managed nursing home. The rooms are great, and the community spaces are bright, clean, light and airy. Overall, an excellent nursing home.

Dad has been a resident since 2023. The care he has received has been exceptional and has greatly contributed to his continued health. All staff are approachable, caring and available to chat when family members visit. Although Dad has limited communication, his reactions when staff interact with him are clearly ones of pleasure and appreciation. As a family, we are all grateful for the fabulous care taken of Dad. Activities provided daily for the residents are varied, engaging and fun. Dad especially loves it when the rabbits come to visit!

My dad has been a resident here for just over 2 years. He has always been happy, and the staff are always kind and friendly.

His fluctuating needs are always met with compassionate care, and he is always treated with dignity and respect. It is really nice to see friendly faces as his health has deteriorated, and it is good to know that he can stay in the same room regardless of his needs. He is much happier having continuity in his care, as am I. It is a lovely home with lots of lovely staff.

Good to see the manager's door is always open and acknowledges you as you enter, along with the reception staff. I feel that it has been light on staffing in the mornings, getting everybody washed and dressed on occasion. Garden areas are excellent, and meals and outside activities are fantastic and well organised.

Reply from Angus Matthew, Head of Marketing at Harbour Care Centre

Thanks Malcolm. Yes our manager's door is indeed always open so he can greet each and every visitor. Our garden has been turned around last year with children's swings and a slide, with additional garden furniture added and of course our beloved bunnies who call our front garden home. Its now a vibrant place when the weather allows. We get out into it at every available opportunity.

Review from Ken B (Partner of Resident) published on 20 March 2025 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

My partner spent the last few weeks of her life at Harbour Care being looked after with gentle respect. She had suffered from Dementia for quite a while, and because of additional medical problems that arose, she had spent periods in Hospital and two other Care Homes in the previous 8 months. No other facility had been able to make myself and her family confident that she was getting the best available care. Every member of staff that we met at Harbour Care, nursing, housekeeping and even the maintenance team were caring kind and considerate, not just to my partner but to us all, her visitors. It was a sad and difficult time for us, but we can look back on it with confidence that my she was made as comfortable as possible by people who knew how to do it and did it with compassion. Thankyou.

Mum has been in Harbour Care Centre since Jan 24. She has settled in really well, helped by bringing her own bed, bedding and personal items. The staff have been kind and helpful on all occasions, meeting mum's needs as her dementia worsens. There is entertainment and activities daily and where possible they are outside the home. All the family who visit mum have been impressed with the care and activities.

My grandmother has been a resident on the dementia wing for a little over 3 months and was very agitated when she first arrived.
The first few weeks were a challenge but all of the staff were all very professional, caring and engaged with the residents very positively. I have been amazed that they have been able to get her to settle to the degree she has.
When you first discover the cost of care it seems like (and is) a lot of money but I can see now why this is the case.

Since arriving, she is in better health and happier than I have seen her in some time. Thank you to all of the team at Harbour Care.

Dad has been at Harbour Care Centres since August. It has been very difficult for us as a family to witness his progression of Alzheimer's. However, dad seems to have settled into Harbour Care really well and is content. The staff are all lovely and do a really good job of supervising dad. Whenever we visit, we are made to feel welcome and always offered a tea or coffee. Dad's room is always clean and tidy. The communal lounge looks lovely with all the Christmas decorations. We are really pleased with the care that dad is receiving.

My husband has been in Harbour Care Portishead home since September 2023 with Alzheimer's. I cannot praise the staff and management team enough for their care and understanding of his individual `diverse needs`. The hands-on staff are tuned in to his needs, and having been there in his room when he needs changing/settling there is a lot of happy banter and distraction to settle him.
Special thanks to one member of staff in particular - you sort him out!

Amazing Care Home.

Wayne Price
Wayne PriceJob Title:Home ManagerJoined: 2021

Wayne Price is the Manager of Harbour Care Centre in Portishead, near Bristol. Originally from Bedminster in Bristol, he has devoted most of his professional life to caring for the elderly. Price studied nursing at the University of the West of England in Bristol, qualifying around 2007, though his experience caring for others began at age 17 while looking after his mother, who had motor neuron disease.

His early career included working at several local NHS hospitals, starting as a staff nurse at Bristol General Hospital and eventually becoming a clinical services manager there. He also worked at South Bristol Community Hospital and the Bristol Royal Infirmary, focusing on elderly care and stroke rehabilitation.

After a back injury required him to leave 12-hour nursing shifts, he moved into care home management. His first role as a home manager was at Amarine Graves in Bristol. Before joining Harbour, he managed Pawnsme in North Somerset for Haven Care Homes. Price took a six-month break during the COVID-19 lockdown to adopt his three children.

Wayne joined Harbour Care Centre and oversaw a major transformation. When he arrived, the home had only 18 residents and lacked nurses, but under his leadership, nursing services were reinstated, two additional floors were opened, and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating moved from 'needs improvement' to 'good in all areas'. Price prioritizes a management style based on openness and delegation. He defines a good care home as being full of "fun," ensuring residents are "living" and engaging in their community.

Renata Bochnak
Renata BochnakJob Title:Deputy ManagerJoined: 2021

Renata serves as the Deputy Manager at Harbour Care Centre. She has worked in the UK for almost 20 years and previously worked for another company for 13 years. She joined Harbour three or four years ago, about a year after Manager Wayne Price arrived, having known him from previous work.

Renata highly values the atmosphere at Harbour, she expalins "people here are warm, kind, and always smiling, which makes the home feel like family." She champions the use of consistent staff, she rarely utilises agency workers, as staff live on-site, which ensures quality and continuity within the home. There is little staff turnover, because everyone is happy at Harbour Care Centre and that filters down to the residents who form companionable bonds with staff.

As a nurse, she encourages her team—which includes many carers who are highly qualified nurses from overseas—to communicate openly and advises staff to "just treat our residents how you would like to be treat". She recalls a lady who arrived requiring nursing care and expected to be requiring end-of-life care but began walking (first with a zimmer, then without) after 3–4 months of attention and proper feeding. She promotes social engagement, noting that staff often organise their own activities, and dance and sing along with residents.

Renata finds it deeply rewarding when families express profound appreciation for the compassionate care provided and we are lucky to have her.
