Harbour Care Centre, nestled in the coastal town of Portishead, offers a comprehensive range of personalised care services including residential care, nursing care, and dementia care. The centre provides a supportive and stimulating environment for up to 108 residents. Harbour offers a unique and affordable alternative to Bristol care homes being just a 30 minute drive from the centre of Bristol.

A key feature is the separate specialist dementia care unit, which operates as the Willow suite. This dedicated area is specifically designed to meet the unique and individual needs of residents living with various forms of dementia, providing a secure and comforting space.

The care home is set in a vibrant location, offering views toward the Portishead harbourside, enhancing the sense of community. The property is surrounded by accessible front and rear gardens, providing large outdoor spaces and seating areas for all residents, including those in the dementia community, to relax, enjoy activities, and engage in social interaction.

Additional services encompass permanent and short-term/respite stays, convalescent care, and a robust daily activities programme. Amenities include en-suite rooms, a café, a hair salon, and delicious, chef-prepared meals with flexible dining options. The overall approach is person-centred, focusing on the physical, emotional, and social well-being of every individual.

Harbour has a unique atmosphere which is supported by the continuity of the staff, many of whom live on-site and the senior management team who have worked together for many years. The richness of activities is what sets the home apart, with staff joining in and helping to shape the regular trips to the local pub, the marina and local swimming baths.

My auntie came from another home but she is so much happier and looks much better since she has moved to Haven Lodge. We are so pleased with the home. She was 100 last week and they gave her wonderful party for all the family and made us so welcome.

Great care taken in a loving environment. Levels of dementia vary, my mother-in-law's is relatively average but even the worst are very well looked after. The whole environment is loving, caring and familiar.

I have a lot of experience of various care homes and wards at various hospitals with my husband. Haven Lodge is a very bright, modern, well appointed home, which is following the 'dementia matters' criteria very carefully, some care homes keep the clients in one room to supervise them closely, so they
lose freedom, but in Haven Lodge they walk freely up and down the corridors, which is brilliant exercise for everyone but is much harder work for carers and staff to supervise. New clients are naturally anxious but usually settle in quite quickly. The food is good and well balanced but perhaps more greens needed? Staffing is tight and various but on the whole, everyone does very well, in my opinion, more regular entertainment needed.

Generally the home is good, but lack of staff does mean that at times residents can be kept waiting for a toilet visit or pad change which does make considerable stress. Food is good, but again assistance to eat is sparse because of overstretched staff. The overall behaviour of staff is good and caring
, but agency staff are not as good. The home is clean and well kept. With some reservation I am satisfied with the overall care of my wife.

Staff are generally very caring but due to a shortage of staff most of the time and a high use of agency staff, they appear very overworked.

Cleaning of the rooms could be better and is very variable.

We have had problems finding things that go missing which is a concern when it comes to such

items as spectacles which are important to our mother. All items are labelled.

There is a general problem in communication due to the lack of staff.

Generally this is a very caring home but due to working with the minimum number of staff required - problems are not always resolved efficiently - or communicated to the relatives - ie falls, etc.

Having moved our aunt to Haven Lodge from another care home last December to be nearer her family, we found the home to be excellent, the staff are caring, friendly and interact well with the residents. Aunty seems to have settled in well and is very happy in Haven Lodge. She thoroughly enjoyed her
100th Birthday party which the home put on for her!
Reply from Alan Stewart, Care Manager at Harbour Care CentreThank you for your response to our care for your aunt. We depend on such responses to support the staff providing care. You have provided essential feedback which is appreciated.

Haven Lodge has been home for my wife for 3 years. It meets her every need in a caring, supporting, dignified and personal way. Staff are committed to providing the best care and make up a happy family. Staff and management are very approachable and supportive and sympathetic to our needs.
Reply from Alan Stewart, Care Manager at Harbour Care CentreThank you very much for your kind response and observations on our Care Home. We appreciate feedback, which helps those supporting residents to have a personal and considered approach to their care.

Staffing problems - residents in lounge left unattended for over 15 mins, had to help resident needing toilet to sit back down as she was unsteady, went to find help and had to wait over 5 mins.
My aunt was smelling of faeces when I have arrived and no staff in view to attend, whilst 2 eventually found
and she was being dealt with, I was the only non-resident in the lounge: helping to prevent a fall of lady needing loo.
Generally staff kind and gentle but inadequate number to monitor lounge with several very frail residents. This is a nursing floor and cost reflects this.
Reply from Pat Sheppard, Regional Manager at Harbour Care CentreThank you for taking the time to write a review. We are pleased that you find the staff to be kind, gentle and treat your aunt with dignity. It is unacceptable that you found the lounge area unsupervised for this length of time, and residents in need of support. We monitor staffing levels daily and this is based on the current dependency of the residents. We are currently undertaking a recruitment drive and would welcome any input from relatives in this process. We are also undertaking a review of how and when staff engage with residents, and how residents are supported to take part in meaningful activities. We will also be carrying out observed practice which will include monitoring of support given in lounges. We would welcome the opportunity to share our findings with you.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.435)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.435) out of 10 for Harbour Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 17 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.723 for Harbour Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (155 Excellents x 5) + (38 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 202 Ratings = 4.723
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.712 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Harbour Care Centre is based on 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.925
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 108 registered maximum number of service users is 21.6. 17 Positive Reviews ÷ 21.6 = 0.787
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Wayne

Wayne Price

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2021

Wayne Price is the Manager of Harbour Care Centre in Portishead, near Bristol. Originally from Bedminster in Bristol, he has devoted most of his professional life to caring for the elderly. Price studied nursing at the University of the West of England in Bristol, qualifying around 2007, though his experience caring for others began at age 17 while looking after his mother, who had motor neuron disease.

His early career included working at several local NHS hospitals, starting as a staff nurse at Bristol General Hospital and eventually becoming a clinical services manager there. He also worked at South Bristol Community Hospital and the Bristol Royal Infirmary, focusing on elderly care and stroke rehabilitation.

After a back injury required him to leave 12-hour nursing shifts, he moved into care home management. His first role as a home manager was at Amarine Graves in Bristol. Before joining Harbour, he managed Pawnsme in North Somerset for Haven Care Homes. Price took a six-month break during the COVID-19 lockdown to adopt his three children.

Wayne joined Harbour Care Centre and oversaw a major transformation. When he arrived, the home had only 18 residents and lacked nurses, but under his leadership, nursing services were reinstated, two additional floors were opened, and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating moved from 'needs improvement' to 'good in all areas'. Price prioritizes a management style based on openness and delegation. He defines a good care home as being full of "fun," ensuring residents are "living" and engaging in their community.

Renata Bochnak

Job Title: Deputy Manager Joined: 2021

Renata serves as the Deputy Manager at Harbour Care Centre. She has worked in the UK for almost 20 years and previously worked for another company for 13 years. She joined Harbour three or four years ago, about a year after Manager Wayne Price arrived, having known him from previous work.

Renata highly values the atmosphere at Harbour, she expalins "people here are warm, kind, and always smiling, which makes the home feel like family." She champions the use of consistent staff, she rarely utilises agency workers, as staff live on-site, which ensures quality and continuity within the home. There is little staff turnover, because everyone is happy at Harbour Care Centre and that filters down to the residents who form companionable bonds with staff.

As a nurse, she encourages her team—which includes many carers who are highly qualified nurses from overseas—to communicate openly and advises staff to "just treat our residents how you would like to be treat". She recalls a lady who arrived requiring nursing care and expected to be requiring end-of-life care but began walking (first with a zimmer, then without) after 3–4 months of attention and proper feeding. She promotes social engagement, noting that staff often organise their own activities, and dance and sing along with residents.

Renata finds it deeply rewarding when families express profound appreciation for the compassionate care provided and we are lucky to have her.
