New floor opened up with residential and nursing beds available.
Wayne Price is the Manager of Harbour Care Centre in Portishead, near Bristol. Originally from Bedminster in Bristol, he has devoted most of his professional life to caring for the elderly. Price studied nursing at the University of the West of England in Bristol, qualifying around 2007, though his experience caring for others began at age 17 while looking after his mother, who had motor neuron disease.
His early career included working at several local NHS hospitals, starting as a staff nurse at Bristol General Hospital and eventually becoming a clinical services manager there. He also worked at South Bristol Community Hospital and the Bristol Royal Infirmary, focusing on elderly care and stroke rehabilitation.
After a back injury required him to leave 12-hour nursing shifts, he moved into care home management. His first role as a home manager was at Amarine Graves in Bristol. Before joining Harbour, he managed Pawnsme in North Somerset for Haven Care Homes. Price took a six-month break during the COVID-19 lockdown to adopt his three children.
Wayne joined Harbour Care Centre and oversaw a major transformation. When he arrived, the home had only 18 residents and lacked nurses, but under his leadership, nursing services were reinstated, two additional floors were opened, and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating moved from 'needs improvement' to 'good in all areas'. Price prioritizes a management style based on openness and delegation. He defines a good care home as being full of "fun," ensuring residents are "living" and engaging in their community.
Renata serves as the Deputy Manager at Harbour Care Centre. She has worked in the UK for almost 20 years and previously worked for another company for 13 years. She joined Harbour three or four years ago, about a year after Manager Wayne Price arrived, having known him from previous work.
Renata highly values the atmosphere at Harbour, she expalins "people here are warm, kind, and always smiling, which makes the home feel like family." She champions the use of consistent staff, she rarely utilises agency workers, as staff live on-site, which ensures quality and continuity within the home. There is little staff turnover, because everyone is happy at Harbour Care Centre and that filters down to the residents who form companionable bonds with staff.
As a nurse, she encourages her team—which includes many carers who are highly qualified nurses from overseas—to communicate openly and advises staff to "just treat our residents how you would like to be treat". She recalls a lady who arrived requiring nursing care and expected to be requiring end-of-life care but began walking (first with a zimmer, then without) after 3–4 months of attention and proper feeding. She promotes social engagement, noting that staff often organise their own activities, and dance and sing along with residents.
Renata finds it deeply rewarding when families express profound appreciation for the compassionate care provided and we are lucky to have her.
