It felt like home from home, except for having to have an escort but, I understand why this is necessary. The food was good and there was plenty of it. Staff were very helpful but didn't fuss over me which I liked.

My husband is reluctant to have respite breaks in care but he is not well enough to care for himself. He had not stayed at The Harbour Care Home before. He was given a choice of rooms prior to the stay, he met the chef and some of the staff and talked with the Manager about his planned stay.
He was
not walking and was reluctant to drink. His stay was for less than a week and on his return home, he was able to walk with his frame really well around our home and was drinking much more, his skin less dry. The carers had worked with him to improve his walking distance. He enjoyed his stay and found the staff very helpful and friendly. He is happy to return for further respite and I have peace of mind that he is being well cared for.

My grandmother was placed in Haven Lodge under an emergency situation in May due to her carers arranged by the local council not turning up.
I made the phone call asking for help and by the next afternoon a home visit/assessment had taken place and she was in the home and comfortable.
The staff are
excellent, it was clear from day one that this is not just a job to them and they knew all of the families names and could not have been more welcome or in tune with the resident's needs.
The bedrooms can be decorated and styled as needed/preferred by the resident.
The food is fresh and home-cooked every meal.
The home was sparkling clean.
Always something going on to keep the residents involved and active.
All in all a great home but a special thank you to the staff who did all they could to help not just my grandma but all members of the family in what was a stressful time for all.

I was apprehensive about going into respite care (necessary as my wife was having surgery on her leg) as, since my stroke, I cannot walk and my speech is limited to a few words - on a good day! However, all the staff - managers/cleaners/care staff etc were all very welcoming and friendly. My room was
lovely and I was very well looked after for my two-week stay. The food was excellent. Hopefully, I shall not have to go into care again (there's no place like home)! But if it was necessary, I would choose to return to Harbour Residential Care.

My mum stayed for a week of respite care. We were greeted very warmly and my mum was extremely well looked after and very very happy during her week there. The manager who quite easily integrates himself with staff and residents- and all the staff were incredible. NOTHING was too much trouble and
they went out of their way to make sure all her needs were met without any fuss and always with a smile. We liked the setup - the dining room and lounge felt homely and cups of tea were always being made and offered. The gardens are really pleasant and the new BBQ area is fabulous. The grandchildren chose a room for mum - individually decorated bedrooms gave them a lot of choices and they enjoyed making the decision for her. I cannot thank the manager and all of the other dedicated, committed and always smiling staff for all they did for mum.

My father passed away 3 weeks ago.
We wanted to thank all the staff as a whole for providing him with such love, care and respect whilst he was alive. However, more importantly, we must thank them for the way in which he was supported during his last few weeks. The staff were constantly monitoring
him, making sure he wasn't in pain or distressed. He departed this world with dignity for which we cannot praise or thank the staff concerned enough.

My father has Parkinson's disease and a degree of dementia. He stayed for 2 respite periods.
The staff were kind, welcoming and engaging. As far as possible, Dad had one of two specified carers looking after him, enabling bonds to form.
On his birthday, the catering team baked a huge cake for Dad
and the other residents. It was 'Person-centered', i.e. designed with him in mind. When I later thanked the manager for this, he immediately stated that the thanks were due to his catering staff and even introduced them to me so that I could thank them personally.
Likewise, when I praised the 2 carers, the manager called them over, making sure that they got this positive feedback.
Finally, when Dad came out after the second stay, his condition had notably improved. His dexterity, conversation and cognition were much improved. This was noted not only by all family members.
I never see Dad smile as much as when he is staying at Harbour Residential, the staff and manager are excellent.

My Mum has been staying at Harbour Residential Care Centre for respite care. We visited the home earlier in the year and she enjoyed the day very much.
On arrival, we were welcomed by staff who were very friendly and accommodating. The room was well decorated, extremely clean, comfortable, a good size
and pleasant. The laundry service was outstanding, all Mum's clothing had been washed and ironed ready to put away. The staff were kind, helpful and very patient. I felt Mum was well cared for throughout her stay. The Manager was lovely, a real asset to the home. He had taken time out of his day to find out about Mum which really impressed me.
Overall, I thought the home had a comfortable, relaxed environment. The rooms were lovely and staff friendly, kind and committed to providing excellent care.

I have only recently placed my brother in this care home. Right from the very first day the management and staff have been brilliant. Prior to a short spell in hospital, he was in another care home locally. There is no comparison between the two homes. This one is brilliant. The warm welcome we received
and although he has only been a resident for a comparatively short time it is obvious to me that the manager and staff know what they are doing and what is needed for the care of elderly people who need care and assistance in their later life

Dad has been in this home since June 2018, he has always been really well cared for, in every way. He regularly tells me he is very happy and feels loved. The staff are always kind and patient even when Dad has been a bit difficult. He was very poorly in October but due to the attention he received
here, he has recovered and is now doing well, eating and drinking normally again, we didn't expect him to live so are amazed at his progress. We would not want to move Dad anywhere else. While Dad was ill, the district nurses were called in and any treatment needed was provided. He was encouraged to eat and when this wasn't enough he was given fortified drinks, I am sure the love and care he had during this time helped his recovery. The new decorations look wonderful and really brighten the home. There is always a welcome for visiting family, and we are kept informed of all that happens with Dad. Overall the best place for Dad and while he is happy loved and cared for we are happy too.

My father in law has been a resident in Harbour Residential Care centre since June 2018. We feel that the care and attention he receives from all members of staff cannot be faulted. He is treated with respect and dignity; his needs are fully me, with the staff constantly working hard to ensure that
he is comfortable and relaxed. Every effort has been made to find ways to encourage him with his mobility and his eating - during a challenging time in his life.
The staff always involve us with any worries or changes that occur. They are all pro-active, polite, friendly..and clearly, enjoy their role in enabling those with dementia. The centre is clearly being well managed, creating a comfortable and relaxed environment, for all.


We feel happy and confident that my father in law is in safe and caring hands - for this, we are extremely grateful. We would fully recommend Habour Care Centre to anyone faced with the decision to have to place a loved one into residential care.

I am happy to say that I am impressed by Haven Lodge staff and management. The care is exemplary there - my mother soon familiarized herself with staff and surroundings. I honestly cannot think of a better place for anyone's parent. The food is well prepared and hot meals are well received and very
tasty. Residents are never left hungry. Access to tea and refreshments is all day, for residents and their family/visitors. The rooms are beautiful and kept incredibly clean. Staff have always been approachable and happy to see you - it is always a pleasure to visit at Haven Lodge. The residents are interacted with regularly and you can see that the staff are caring and enjoy what they do. My mother warmed to the staff pretty quickly and I cannot praise this care home enough. Superb.

My wife changed from dementia to severe dementia over the 9 1/2 years she was at Haven Lodge. We were always very well looked after. Carers were kind and attentive and often went the second mile. I cannot rate Haven Lodge too highly. We are sorry to have to move now in order to find nursing care.

Having researched other care homes in the area, we felt that Haven Lodge had more to offer. There was a happy, calm atmosphere, where everyone dealt with us in a friendly manner, the Manager and admin staff are very approachable, very friendly and polite; more importantly, the Manager engaged directly
with my father when she went to assess him. Everything was explained to us all and we had no hesitation in believing it was the best choice. The nursing and care staff are caring and respectful. They have a difficult and challenging job to do, and the Haven Lodge staff perform their roles well. We are very happy and grateful for the way in which my father is being cared for, at a time that is, for us as well as my father, extremely sad and upsetting as his health deteriorates. Haven Lodge is well run, providing activities for the residents and the meals and the quantity of, are very good. We have absolutely no hesitation recommending Haven Lodge to anyone who has a relative in need of care.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2021

Wayne Price is the Manager of Harbour Care Centre in Portishead, near Bristol. Originally from Bedminster in Bristol, he has devoted most of his professional life to caring for the elderly. Price studied nursing at the University of the West of England in Bristol, qualifying around 2007, though his experience caring for others began at age 17 while looking after his mother, who had motor neuron disease.


His early career included working at several local NHS hospitals, starting as a staff nurse at Bristol General Hospital and eventually becoming a clinical services manager there. He also worked at South Bristol Community Hospital and the Bristol Royal Infirmary, focusing on elderly care and stroke rehabilitation.


After a back injury required him to leave 12-hour nursing shifts, he moved into care home management. His first role as a home manager was at Amarine Graves in Bristol. Before joining Harbour, he managed Pawnsme in North Somerset for Haven Care Homes. Price took a six-month break during the COVID-19 lockdown to adopt his three children.


Wayne joined Harbour Care Centre and oversaw a major transformation. When he arrived, the home had only 18 residents and lacked nurses, but under his leadership, nursing services were reinstated, two additional floors were opened, and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating moved from 'needs improvement' to 'good in all areas'. Price prioritizes a management style based on openness and delegation. He defines a good care home as being full of "fun," ensuring residents are "living" and engaging in their community.

Renata serves as the Deputy Manager at Harbour Care Centre. She has worked in the UK for almost 20 years and previously worked for another company for 13 years. She joined Harbour three or four years ago, about a year after Manager Wayne Price arrived, having known him from previous work.


Renata highly values the atmosphere at Harbour, she expalins "people here are warm, kind, and always smiling, which makes the home feel like family." She champions the use of consistent staff, she rarely utilises agency workers, as staff live on-site, which ensures quality and continuity within the home. There is little staff turnover, because everyone is happy at Harbour Care Centre and that filters down to the residents who form companionable bonds with staff.


As a nurse, she encourages her team—which includes many carers who are highly qualified nurses from overseas—to communicate openly and advises staff to "just treat our residents how you would like to be treat". She recalls a lady who arrived requiring nursing care and expected to be requiring end-of-life care but began walking (first with a zimmer, then without) after 3–4 months of attention and proper feeding. She promotes social engagement, noting that staff often organise their own activities, and dance and sing along with residents.


Renata finds it deeply rewarding when families express profound appreciation for the compassionate care provided and we are lucky to have her.
