Oak Lodge Care Home is a stylish, purpose-built home situated in the peaceful residential area of Bitterne. Here, they welcome those living with dementia in need of nursing or palliative care.

The nurses are here to help residents live the way they want to, which is made easier by having a home that's been designed with dementia residents in mind. There are lots of social lounges, secure gardens and a tranquil sensory area outside.

My Mother arrived at Oak Lodge a few months ago after a lengthy stay in hospital. We had all been very concerned about her well-being whilst living independently, especially with her advancing dementia and had thought that staying at Oak Lodge for a respite after hospital would be a welcome break for
her. My Mother has found change very upsetting over the years but settled into Oak Lodge surprisingly quickly. We were so pleased for her when the decision was made that she should not return to her home and Oak Lodge accepted her as a permanent resident; we have not seen my Mother so contented, animated and actively participating in activities for many years. We feel that her life now is so much richer and rewarding; she is without a doubt in a happy place and that is down to the amazing care and compassion shown every day by all of the wonderful staff. We are all most grateful to them for bringing so much joy to her life where for so long there has been none.

My mother has been a resident for 6 months since being taken directly from hospital after a nasty fall and onset of dementia. She was most upset not to be returning to her beloved home. However, she has not been as happy as she is now for many many years. She loves it. She loves the food, the staff,
the facilities, etc. Oak Lodge is a beautiful place, the staff are so much fun yet professional whilst observing the need for privacy and dignity. Their approach to cleanliness is second to none. I couldn't wish anywhere better for my mother. Her family are comforted by the care she is receiving and her constant laughter.

My mum has been a resident at Oak Lodge for quite some time now and the standard of care is excellent. Apart from being very clean and pleasant at the home, the staff are always friendly and helpful. I always know my mum is safe and well looked after by the staff. They keep me updated on any changes
as well and the events coordinator regularly send me photos of my mum participating in activities.

Oak Lodge Care Home has cared for my mum now for the past year. She has dementia and is also an amputee and they have been amazing throughout the pandemic making sure mum has been kept safe. Not only are they like a second family to mum but they have also taken the time to help us as a family to come
to terms with placing mum in their care. Nothing has been too much trouble, they are always on the end of the phone if we have any queries. We can only express how happy we are mum is under their care and for anyone considering the home for their loved one, I wouldn’t hesitate; they are great.

The manager and all his staff go that extra mile when they can and are always polite and helpful. Mum needed a haircut badly and the hairdresser they usually have needed to satisfy paperwork before she could come back into the home, so one of the staff who was a qualified hairdresser cut mum's hair
for us and did a wonderful job. They always keep us up to date with mum's health and you can always ring to speak to someone. They always keep the residents occupied with lots of activities.

Ever since my mother has been with the home, I have always found the staff and management at the home friendly and caring and even through this time of the COVID pandemic. I have had no qualms with the way the staff and management have presented themselves during this very stressful time for them and
the residents. I have always been happy with the way they have looked after my mother and when I have seen her, I can see she has been treated and looked after very well and it has been nice to know she is being treated and loved in that way. I can not say enough about all the staff. I have said it before and I will keep saying, they are all heroes!

Dad was placed here after continuous falls at home due to his dementia. He has been here since November 2020. The care staff are friendly and caring, always ready and willing to help both the residents and their families. The entertainment team keep things interesting for the residents, especially in
these times of uncertainty. The Manager and administration staff are always willing to help should there be any problems or questions that you may have.

My aunt passed away in January at the care home. During her 3 years at the home, she was well looked after in every way possible. I couldn't have asked for her to have had better care in her last few years. The staff are an absolute credit to Oak Lodge. Nothing was too much trouble for them. They helped
me keep in touch with her during the tough times brought about by covid. They deserve a big pat on the back. From the reception, the carers, cleaners and entertainment team, right through to everyone that does a magnificent job in keeping the residents well looked after. She really enjoyed taking part in the various activities and it was lovely to see. The day my aunt passed away was obviously very sad, but everyone was helpful and supportive. The manager and his team have supported me through the days since my aunt passed away. Oak Lodge will always be a very special place for me and my family. Thank you to them all.

Because of coronavirus, I haven't seen Mum since 04/03/2020. I know that the carers are working tirelessly to look after all the residents. My suggestion is that, instead of serving the dinners on a normal diner plate, which to someone with dementia looks like a mountain to climb and invariably they
won't touch any of it, serve it on side plate with smaller portions. Cut down on the food wastage. Don't cook gammon that they can't chew!

In general, the care home is good. However, I feel there is room for improvement in the following areas - Staff levels - these always seem to be insufficient.
Logbook - Handwriting not legible, information and records inconsistent and often missing, (method outdated).
Recommend an electronic computer-based
system be implemented for residents' logbook/care records.
Residents clothing items not returned/lost when cleaned, sometimes other residents' clothing items returned to the wrong room.

I have found that all the staff treat the resident with dignity and kindness and nothing is too much for them. They also treated me well when I was able to visit my mother-in-law.

My mother is bedridden and is looked after very well by the care assistants. During the Covid lockdown, the care home has not allowed relatives to visit but has provided tablets for Facetime to keep in touch. They have isolated so well that no virus has broken out in the home.

As the family cannot visit my husband at the moment, it is difficult to say what the home is doing at the moment. We can now talk to my husband on a mobile and I do phone every day to find out how he is. He seems happy but misses visits. It must be very difficult for the staff at the moment and to keep
the home bug free.

My husband has received excellent care. Although he has dementia, they chat to him (better than I can!) and I feel glad that somebody cares about him now I am no longer able to. They have all been very friendly when I am able to visit.

Oak Lodge offers high standards of care with a professional staff and their attitude towards residents is caring and respectful.
My Mother was discharged from hospital in October 2019 to Oak Lodge following a series of strokes and suffering with dementia.
Due to the current pandemic, we are not able
to visit but receive regular updates from Oak Lodge.
I am very glad to report that there have been no issues with their supply of PPE and at the time of writing the home is virus-free.
Prior to the current situation, we were allowed to visit at any time and always made welcome by all members of staff.
My levels of stress and worry about my Mother have significantly reduced compared to when we were caring for her in her own home with help from carers (who were excellent) four times a day.
We would recommend Oak Lodge who although BUPA can accept local authority funded patients.
We know Mum is in a safe place and it is very reassuring for us. A big thank you to all at Oak Lodge.

My father had to go into this care home from being in hospital for respite care. It has been a difficult time due to the COVID-19 lockdown situation. We have been unable to see him. What I have been told over the phone has been very informative and he has been cared for well. I cannot say anything more
than this as I have not seen anything physically.
Only issue is being able to speak to him on the telephone. Myself and my mum have had various degrees of difficulty getting through. I understand that the staff will be busy but it’s not easy in the situation we are all in, especially for my mum as she is separated from her husband, is not used to video calling and gets frustrated quickly when she can’t get through via conventional methods for her.

Job Title: General Manager

I am the General Manager at Oak Lodge. I have been in this role for four years but have been working in care for more than eleven.


I started out as a support worker for adults with learning disabilities. I then moved into home management and four years ago I moved from learning disabilities into the elderly care sector.


Before working in care I had various careers including Live Music Venue management in Camden town and plant mechanics.


In my spare time I like to challenge myself physically and have completed the London classic twice and I am now in training for Iron Man 2021.


I love working in a care environment as I feel privileged to be able to support our residents to continue to live safe happy lives with a good dose of fun thrown in for good measure!

I joined the team in 2016 - I previously spent over 20 years’ working for the Department of Work and Pensions and after taking voluntary redundancy I thought my experience would be a good fit for this role.


I enjoy supporting our residents and their loved ones and answering any questions they have, working as part of a great team who care for our residents and the endless supply of home-made cakes and biscuits!


I live locally and I am married with one son and I enjoy films, quizzing and gaming with my son.
