Overall Experience

My mother was a resident at Bridge House Care Home for over five years. Overall a very good care home with a very kind friendly and caring atmosphere, good facilities, activities but expensive. My mother's main issue was the variable quality of food she often complained that meals arrived late with especially the eggs congealed or not hot. On arrival, she clearly stated she did not eat cheese or tomato but after years in residence, she was still offered pizza etc! Because fo the food issues she did not feel she was getting value for money, and quite upset by the high staff turnover.

Reply from Sybill Evans, Director of Nursing at Bridge House Care Home

It was such a pleasure to look after your mum and she is greatly missed by us all! I am very sorry to hear about the food issues - we have addressed this now by cooking and serving them differently and we have a new Head Chef also who is doing amazing catering for the clients. We value the feedback so we can integrate improvements moving forward.

I was looking for a care home with nursing facilities for rest of life care for my friend who has Parkinson's. I found most homes to be very busy and noisy. Bridge House is calm, peaceful and can be likened to a good quality hotel. My friend has been there for one year now and he is very happy and has improved dramatically since he has been there.

My wife has been a resident since August 2017. At first, she took part in all the activities, but as her condition deteriorated she was able to participate less. The care staff, led by an excellent nurse, make every effort to enrich her life. Nothing is too much trouble. The staff are well trained, the facilities well designed. I am treated as well as the residents. The care and compassion are constant.

Dad moved in for a 4 week trial period - his previous assisted living facility being no longer able to provide sufficient care for him.

The move was indeed unsettling for both Dad and us - far more than we had really envisaged but gradually, step by step, with a lot of input and care from everyone at the Bridge, the settling in happened. The staff cannot be faulted for their care and kindness - both to the family and Dad. Eight weeks after moving in, I feel that we are just about there!

Reply from Sybill Evans, Director of Nursing at Bridge House Care Home

It was such a pleasure to get to know you and your dad and being able to nurse him and nurture you as a family at a very difficult time of his life when he was declining in health. We are so privileged in having people like you to trust us in our ability to make a difference. Thank You

Every effort has been made to welcome my husband. We are impressed that its considered important not only to have a comfortable room but to be near residents with whom he is likely to have common interests.

After two weeks of respite "trial", we have asked for my husband's residence is made permanent. No hesitation!

My husband is a dementia patient and, as such, he has times when he can be difficult. He is always treated with great kindness and respect by staff who are always happy and smiling. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they have infinite patience and a wonderful sense of calm. He tells me 'it is a good place'.

When entering Bridge House you feel you are going into a large family home.

My father has recently become a resident at Bridge House Care Home. He originally went in for two weeks respite but very quickly decided this is where he wanted to stay permanently.
He had been struggling with walking in his bungalow and had fallen several times.
At Bridge House, he felt safer with 24-hour care. He loves his room and has filled it with his favourite possessions from home.
He says he feels safer now and he is joining in with activities and has a new lease of life.

He said 'everyone is kind and looking after me so I will stay here'.

A very well-run care home in the middle of Abingdon, which has advantages of being near shops, the town centre etc, yet beside the River Thames. A well-designed and well laid out building.

Good management with attentive, cheerful staff. Good programme of activities. Intriguing blend with a 'club' allowing older non-residents to use facilities (cafe, gym, cinema, salon etc) which brings delightful life to the place. A good business model.

Nice rooms, especially end of the corridor. Good food. Activities most days. Bistro for drinks, light snacks and meeting other people. Very good, friendly staff. Near the park and next to a supermarket. Cannot think of anywhere better.

Bridge House looked after my mother wonderfully well for two and a half years until the end of her life. Bridge House doesn't look like a care home which was why my mother chose it. She could get her hair done in the lovely hair salon then go and have a coffee at the bistro which was her normal routine before moving to Bridge House. And she was able to go out with the driver on trips around Abingdon which gave her an important sense of freedom
The Riverly Club staff, nurses and care staff took the time to get to know her and understand her needs - she didn't always make it easy but they never stopped trying. They grasped what was most important to my mother and kept that at the forefront of her care, especially as her needs changed over time.

Their end of life care was outstanding - both in how they kept my mother comfortable, peaceful and pain-free and how they supported our family. I can't fault them. I feel very fortunate to have had Bridge House looking after my mother.

Well-orchestrated care over the two and half years my relative was living there, which was impressive given how her condition changed during her time at Bridge House. They embraced family involvement and were always open to thinking of new ways to stimulate the care home environment for its residents.

My relative is enjoying making new friends and is really beginning to feel "at home" at Bridge House. The décor and furnishings are well thought out to magic up a pleasing ambience in all areas and the positivity of the staff are conducive to a happy life.

It's a nice place for friends and relatives to visit.

My father has been here for over 2 years.

During this time, his dementia/Parkinson's has deteriorated resulting in his ability to communicate and walk. Despite this, the home has been extremely responsive to meet his needs. They have taken time to learn more about him as a person and encourage his hobbies and interests. All the staff are caring, professional and cheerful. They are well led by the manager.

Overall care and safety is good. Some areas could be improved such as foot and nail care. We pay £5500 a month, surely £20 of that could be used on monthly Chiropodist visits. I have to cut my mother's nails and hair as both need to be paid for and this mounts up each month on top of toiletries etc. Toe nails are not easy to deal with in old age.
