My father-in-law has improved since he arrived at Bowes House. Good food. Good care. Friendly staff and atmosphere. Comfortable room. On reflection, an ideal care/nursing home.

My husband has been a resident of Bowes House since February 2022. I am very happy with the care and consideration he has been given. He has settled well and has made a lot of friends amongst the staff.

Exceptional - the care shown by the nurses, the standard of the facilities and the daily schedules have been brilliant and taken the worry out of looking after my mother in her final years.

I cannot express my thanks enough to the staff on Barley. They looked after my husband right to the end. It helped me come to terms with my loss. We were married for over 62 years and I took care of him and loved him deeply for all that time and the staff on Barley took over from me and I can't thank them enough.

Mum is settled into a routine. She is joining in with activities and enjoys her food. The staff keep me informed of progress on a daily basis when I ring Mum every day. I feel happy that after six months, she is finally enjoying life again, with company around her.

My mother stayed at Bowes House for two weeks respite in November. She was initially unsure about staying, however, soon changed her mind after a couple of days and loved her stay. The staff were excellent and made her feel at home and included in all activities. She became more energetic and social whilst staying.

I initially contacted Bowes House, when we were in crisis with my father. From the very first telephone call, right through to when my father sadly passes away, every single member of staff we came into contact with was professional, compassionate and caring. We could not have wished for a more peaceful end for my father. Thank you to all the staff, you are a very special group of people.

I do not have one bad word to say about Bowes House. I have worked in the care system and I wish that all homes were like here. The building is clean, bright and doesn't smell of over-boiled cabbage. All the food is fresh and cooked in their own kitchen, the residents have a choice of two mains and two desserts every mealtime. It has a cafe where residents and their friends and family can all enjoy a cuppa together, even a bar. There's activities during the day if a resident wants to join in. Today I saw a man come to sing live and some ladies were up and dancing, it's a very happy environment. The rooms are comfortable and warm, ensuite/wet rooms and cosy. The staff go above and beyond to make your loved ones feel like nothing is too much to ask for. The few members of staff that I was personally involved with, from management to cleaning, felt like family (I will miss them). I wish I could give it more stars, very highly recommended.

My mother was transferred to Bowes House after a long period in the hospital, it made such a difference to be able to visit her in such a lovely environment and so reassuring to know she had the privacy and quiet of her own room having been on a ward for so long.
All the staff I came into contact with were lovely, and caring, and treated mum with empathy and respect.

You made a very difficult time as comfortable as it could have been.

I was visiting a friend at the care home, which I have done many times and was lucky enough on the latest occasion to arrive while activities were on and was able to see the amazing work the staff do. All so friendly, going the extra mile to ensure all residents have a good time and are well looked after. Well done to all the staff.

All my dealings with the arrangements for her stay were dealt with promptly and efficiently with the utmost professionalism. This was our first experience of a care home and I would not hesitate to go back to Bowes House if it was needed. Thank you.

My mother is very happy at Bowes House. Although her memory is fading, she is always pleased to have visitors and is very positive about her new home. The staff went above and beyond the call of duty to allow us to visit (from New Zealand), at the end of lockdown. We had a private place to meet with masks, other ppe and sanitiser after lateral flow and temperature checks. Everyone is kind and friendly and I can't commend the facility highly enough.

Having spent a number of weeks recovering after an operation. I only can say that it has been a great experience. All the staff are wonderful and caring. I have gained my strength and confidence and made many new friends. The food is excellent, the activities are really enjoyable, and I've enjoyed the time having coffee with family in the cafe. Thank you, everyone, in the Barley Unit; you are all wonderful!

The Bowes House has been a godsend for my mum. The staff are the most understanding people I have ever come across. They obviously adore their jobs. Their attention to detail is amazing. The upkeep of the home is above and beyond. I feel very happy having Mum here, as I live 600 miles away. I know she is in good hands.

I have noticed a great improvement since the new manager arrived. Today is my mum's 94th birthday. The staff have made this such a special day for her. She's has decorations and a cake, and will have a decorated table at lunchtime. She said that she is very spoilt. This is an example of the care that the home gives to each resident and to the families of the residents. I would not hesitate to recommend Bowes House.

Finlin MartinJob Title:Home Manager

I am a highly experienced Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife, qualified in India in 1993, with over three decades of diverse clinical and leadership experience across India, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom.

In 2015, a deeply personal experience - caring for my mother during her battle with cancer - became a turning point in my career. Following her passing, I chose to transition from hospital-based care into the nursing home sector, wanting to improve the quality of life for older people. Over the past 11 years, I have worked as a Home Manager and Peripatetic Manager across groups of nursing homes, specialising in complex care including brain injuries, learning disabilities, and dementia.

I remain deeply passionate about elderly care, taking pride in providing personalised support. Each day, I value having meaningful engagement with residents, especially those without regular visitors, and I believe in maintaining dignity, compassion, and respect in every interaction.
