Our mothers end of life care in September 2021 was extremely good and gave our mum dignity and respect in her last days. The staff were attentive, supportive and welcoming ensuring our mothers needs were met.
In addition the support they gave us as a family at this time was compassionate and respectful. General guidance and information of our mothers health was communicated well.

The team leaders, management, activity workers , care workers and reception all played a part in allowing our mums passing to be free of pain and comfortable. Thank you

Friendly staff and nice environment. More help is needed with Mum's personal care and hair washing, cutting her nails etc. The staff may need more training to encourage.

My mum was at Bowes House for 4 years. She was loved by all the staff and was always well cared for. She was treated with respect and dignity as her health declined over the years. (died 24th July). Whilst mum was able, she really enjoyed the activities, particularly the music events. I have no hesitation in recommending Bowes House to those with loved ones who now need assistance.

Throughout the pandemic, the staff at Bowes House have all been brilliant. The staff on Mum's unit treat her with care and respect and all go the extra mile to keep her safe and comfortable. Infection control has been excellent. The Management's new ideas and systems are welcomed and appreciated.

My mother had become extremely anxious, and really needed somebody with her 24 hours a day, something that I couldn't achieve for her. Bowes House seemed to me to be the gold standard for care locally, and in a very short period of time my mother was admitted, but because of the Covid lockdowns she had to isolate herself initially, which was not an ideal start. It took her several weeks to find her feet at Bowes House, but suddenly she was back to her normal self, laughing and smiling in the Skype calls we had. She immersed herself in the many activities and made many friends, staff as well as residents. But then about four weeks later she passed away, peacefully. This was unexpected, but at least I have the comfort that I don't think that I could have done much better for her towards the end of her life, and she really seemed to enjoy those last four weeks.

One other point, I feel that all the staff knew my mother as a person, and they seemed to very much enjoy her for who she was.

My 99-year-old mother, who has vascular dementia, has been a resident at Bowes House for over four years. My mother continues to receive excellent care from a wonderful team. All the staff deserve the highest praise. My mother is always treated with dignity and is always kept clean and presentable.

The CEO and management team also deserve praise, especially in these very difficult times, for keeping us well informed and facilitating visits at the earliest opportunity. The new manager’s introduction of monthly relatives Zoom meetings is welcomed. Varied daily activities have continued to be provided by the lifestyle team and the weekly video calls with our relatives have been very helpful.

After doing some research and speaking with friends who had the experience of Bowes House, our family decided to choose the nursing home for our father. He needed palliative care after he spent six weeks in hospital. I can’t thank the staff enough for their care for dad and support for our mother and myself in allowing us to visit him the weekend before his passing and to allow us both to be with him when he sadly passed away after a short two-week stay.

The sad thing is that he was too ill to appreciate his surroundings. During the difficult times we are all experiencing, the staff were amazing and couldn’t have done more to keep us informed of dad’s condition and always helpful when we called. I have to thank in particular the staff on duty during the late afternoon, evening and night of dad’s passing, so professional and caring, I couldn’t imagine a better place for dad to spend his last days. It will be lovely to visit as a family to thank all the staff when things improve.

My Nan was admitted into Bowes House in the winter, during the pandemic as she could sadly, no longer live alone, due to her deterioration. The care and compassion that has been shown to my Nan by the care and management team has been amazing. They have provided weekly facetime calls, to enable us to still interact during these strange times and she is interacting with the activities and is not alone. We know Nan is being looked after by the very caring staff. The buildings and facilities are well maintained and most of all, clean. The staff are so helpful and very supportive, not only to my Nan but also to us, as a family.

My father stayed at Bowes House for a few weeks in October 2020 until he passed away. The staff provided care, compassion and flexibility for him in his last few weeks. They kept us informed of important updates, consulted us about important decisions to do with his health and medication, whilst also providing suitable advice. I could always find someone to give me information when I rang up to find out how my Father was doing. I particularly wanted to thank a staff worker for his expertise, sensitivity, and understanding. He was prepared to have a frank conversation with my father and his wife about his condition, which was valuable preparation for the end of life. I also wanted to thank the staff worker who was on duty when my father passed away, he was attentive to my father. Thank you.

I live in a retirement complex quite close to Bowes House and have visited in the past as a member of a local church group, and for various open house events in the past. I have always been impressed with the facility. Imagine my surprise when on Valentine's Day I had a knock on the door and was given a beautifully packaged heart-shaped biscuit donated by Bowes House. It was such a simple, yet profound gesture and the biscuit was absolutely delicious. It says a lot for the manager and staff that they could look beyond their own residents and reach out to the local community. A very big thank you

My aunt has been in Bowes House for nearly a year. I was worried that the residence we had chosen would be suitable for my Aaunt’s needs. A year on I am very pleased with the choice we made. I can’t speak highly enough of the attention, care and support everyone at Bowes has shown and continues to do so especially during this pandemic. Well done Bowes House. Strength and honour as they say.

The staff and management at Bowes House continue to be a great support to us as a family at this most difficult time. We are unable to be with our loved one and give them a much-needed hug, but we know that the staff are their "stand-in-family" for us, which is an enormous comfort. Thank you to you all.

My mum was a resident in Bowes House from May 19 until she passed away in October this year. She had always said she didn't want to go in a care home, so the decision to move her to Bowes House was not an easy one. With the amazing support and care she received she was settled and happy within 2 weeks, she spent the last months of her life with fulfilled days and happiness.

The buildings and facilities are very well maintained and above all clean. But most importantly for us, she was looked after by the kindest most caring staff, we could not have been happier with the love and kindness they gave mum. This became even more important when Covid hit and they became her family. I would not have any hesitation to recommend this care home and the lovely team that work there, some I know have been there a long time which speaks for its self. If you are looking for a care home you could not do better than Bowes House.

Bowes House staff looked after our mum with the greatest care and love until her death last month. I cannot thank them enough for enriching her life and making her so happy. They were with her at the end as we couldn't be because of Covid but we knew she was in kind and loving hands. Thank you is hardly enough and I would thoroughly recommend this lovely place.

The staff at Bowes House have worked hard during the period of lockdown to keep relatives in touch with residents. It has been a lifeline for me to be able to have video calls with my mum twice a week so that we can see each other. Generally, the staff have done an excellent job in keeping residents safe and well cared for during really difficult times for everyone.

Finlin MartinJob Title:Home Manager

I am a highly experienced Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife, qualified in India in 1993, with over three decades of diverse clinical and leadership experience across India, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom.

In 2015, a deeply personal experience - caring for my mother during her battle with cancer - became a turning point in my career. Following her passing, I chose to transition from hospital-based care into the nursing home sector, wanting to improve the quality of life for older people. Over the past 11 years, I have worked as a Home Manager and Peripatetic Manager across groups of nursing homes, specialising in complex care including brain injuries, learning disabilities, and dementia.

I remain deeply passionate about elderly care, taking pride in providing personalised support. Each day, I value having meaningful engagement with residents, especially those without regular visitors, and I believe in maintaining dignity, compassion, and respect in every interaction.
