This was my Mum's first Christmas at Portelet Lodge so I wasn't sure what to expect. Everyone was in a festive spirit and thoroughly enjoying themselves. The residents had all received Christmas presents delivered with a hug and a kiss from the Manager. I was invited to stay for Christmas dinner
which I was delighted to accept.
The staff are always friendly and welcoming. They treat everyone with love, respect and kindness so I know my Mum is in excellent hands.

I can honestly recommend Portelet Cottage for its friendliness and genuine care for the needs of older residents specifically with dementia. I have witnessed staff genuinely caring for residents, (second to none). Always a welcoming smile and looking very happy in the workplace. Nothing seems too
much bother to them and they carry out their work very professionally. There is total respect and dignity for residents. I could not wish for anything better for my friend than her stay at Portelet Cottage. She is totally secure, cared for, washed, dressed, fed and well looked after. Top marks!!

My mum lived at Portelet Lodge from July until November 2025, after we were no longer able to support her at home. It was a very difficult decision to make for mum to move there, but from the first we really appreciated the calm and caring atmosphere at Portelet Lodge. Mum was always well cared for
and thought that the staff were always good to her. I found my every interaction to be kind and caring. Lovely people.
We only moved mum so that she could be closer to family otherwise she would have stayed.
In terms of how it could be improved, my main comment would be that I thought that there could be more activities going on for people.
Reply from Judite Sousa, Deputy manager at Portelet LodgeThank you for the wonderful review Simone. It was our pleasure to support your Mum during her stay with us. We appreciate all the nice words you sent to us - our Team are very grateful.

Portelet was the home of my Mother for the last year of her life. I visited on may occasions and saw nothing but exemplary care for my mother at the home, staff were welcoming whenever visited. There was provision for activities in the living room, conservatory and garden areas, and always plenty of
staff on hand to assist patients. The offer to donate my mother's piano to the care home was accepted, and it was installed in the home within a fortnight, meaning my mother, who had dementia, could access an instrument that aided her mental well being. It was also a source of comfort for us knowing others could use the piano, and this in trun assisted the staff in their care duties. The stairlift was also crucial to allow patients to move around without as much risk to themselves, and often we offered tea, coffee, cake, crisps, as a courtesy. Great work is being done at this home to make it a sanctuary for vulnerable adults, and it was obvious care staff cared beyond the call of duty there
Reply from Sreeja Sreekumar, Regional Manager at Portelet CottageThank you so much for taking the time to share such a heartfelt review. It was a privilege to care for your mother during her time at Portelet, and we are truly grateful for your kind words.

My mum was welcomed into the home in 2024. I have never been unhappy with her care. The staff has always been friendly. My mum found it hard to fit into a home with lots of residents, where they have to be washed and dressed before breakfast. In this home, being smaller, the staff are happy to fit
into my mum's routine so she is less stressed.

My Father was moved to Portelet Loge, for respite support following the sudden hospital admission of my Mother. Due to his dementia and confusion his behavior was at times unpredictable.
This was a difficult and distressing time for my Father, and us as a family. The care staff were amazing, both in
treating my Father with dignity and respect at all times and reassuring us as a family. They went over and above to ensure his needs were being met. They worked quickly with professionals in Social Care, Community Primary Health Team and the Dementia Service, always advocating on my Father best interest.
My Father settled eventually, becoming friends with carers and spoke fondly of them. When his health deteriated the carers supported us as a family to be able to stay with him 24/7 and we were with him when he passed (RIP)
We will be ever grateful to the carer staff and team at Portelet Lodge for their relentless care and support.

This home has provided a high standard of care for my brother over the past 18months. He has a very complex medical history with signifcant care needs. Due to his medical condition there have been times when he has been destructive to not only his own property but of the home. Yet despite is unpredictable
behaviour they have taken time to know him as a person. They find ways to reduce his anxieties, they play music that helps calm him, they care. They ensure every aspect of his room is safe. Please don't judge this care home on its decor (currently being updated) but by good leadership skills to ensure staff know the importance of giving a holistic approach to caring for individual residents. Residents become like family, they take those that are able out, even to a fast food restaurant if that's what they want to do. They build good relationships with family members and are open to suggestions to improve the overall experience for the residents. As a retired nurse I'm happy to recommend.

My mum has been at Portelet for 9 months and I absolutely can't fault it. My mum is so happy and content there, it is like a home from home. Always spotlessly clean, there is a lovely friendly and calm atmosphere and all the staff are so wonderful, kind, attentive and caring. It is very efficiently
run and communication with us is second to none. My mum really enjoys the food which is very varied and her room is exactly how she wants it and very homely. As a family, we are always made to feel very welcome when visiting and could not wish for anything better. Keep up the good work!

This care home is small and intimate. It is well-run, spotlessly clean, and well-maintained. In all my frequent visits I have found the staff to show the greatest care, respect, and compassion to all the residents. Everyone there seems happy and content and that is especially so for my wife who has
diabetes, dementia, and is nearly blind among other things, yet she is always well dressed in clean clothes and well groomed. I could not be happier for my wife.

My sister came to Portlet Cottage a few months ago. She had been in hospital for a few months and had been very poorly. Since she arrived she has continued to improve physically and mentally. The loving care she has received has made such a difference to her. I haven't seen her so well or so happy in
a long time. I can't thank the lovely manager and her team enough. They really care. The home is clean and tidy and my sister has a lovely comfy room.

My partner has been in Portelet House since January 2023. I cannot fault the care home. All the staff are very dedicated in their work which shows in their everyday routines. Always good communication from all staff to myself and my partner. My partner cannot speak but the staff communicate well with
plenty of jovial banter from all. The house is well-run, very clean and organised. Most of the staff are long-standing and make a very good team at all levels. Communication between staff and visitors is excellent as I see on my daily visits. Any queries I may have are answered quickly and correctly. Being a smallish residence the staff get to know the residents individually and look after them knowing people are individuals not just as a group. I cannot fault any of the staff at Portelet House. Communication is excellent between all parties, I have rated Portelet House as Excellent as I have no qualms about anything they do for my partner and the other residents.

Dad was admitted in April after spending 5 months in hospital and we saw a difference in him within a couple of days. We cannot praise the love and care that he receives from the wonderful staff there. They are always so cheerful, pleasant and polite. If we have any questions about anything they are
always very happy to help and explain anything. We are always informed about anything that Dad needs, whether it's about his medication, next haircut, everything. We are always informed about everything, which puts the family's mind at ease. We cannot praise our new family enough, (that is what it feels like on our visits). Our extended family.
Dad is happy and if Dad is happy we are very happy.
Thank you to all the staff, from management to the carers and everyone in between for all that you do for Dad and the love and care you give him.

Couldn’t be happier with the love and attention shown towards my Mum during this last year of her life that she spent at Portelet Cottage. She passed away on Tuesday 26th peacefully and quietly. Everyone involved with her care always exhibited her dignity and affection to which I will always be thankful

My mother went into Portelet Cottage in August 2018, throughout her stay all staff past and present have always been kind considerate and informative, with anything that cropped up ie if she had been feeling unwell or the doctor had been called and what medication she was on. Whenever I went to see
her either announced or if I dropped in “off the cuff “ she was always dressed and presentable. They had a hairdresser and a chiropodist once a month come in and Mum always liked having her hair done. They have always understood the type of care that a person with dementia needs. When she first went in she was always wanting to go home but she quickly got into the swing of things doing colouring or playing games until she became too unwell. The last two years she has been mostly uncommunicative due to her condition and having to be hand-fed. I would recommend this home to anyone who was looking to put someone into care, they care about.

My husband arrived in November 23 and settled in extremely quickly in the home; I think this was because of the dedicated staff and management team. The staff treat other people living in the home with dignity and dedication. I am glad that my husband is at Portelet Manor because I feel he is looked
after very well and always looks well-presented.
The food is nutritional, well prepared and a good variety, the fees paid for extras like chiropody and hairdresser are very reasonable and to have them on sight is even better.
The Christmas festivities were excellent, with every member of staff joining in with the residents from the management team down to the rest of the staff; it was a joy to be hold, seeing everyone's faces and having a good time.
The staff are all very welcoming, and although the management team are very busy, they always find the time to keep me updated.

I cannot praise the team at Portelet Cottage highly enough, from the manager to the seniors, as well as the daily carers. They have all been incredibly caring, diligent, and compassionate not only to my mum as a resident but also to our family's needs as her health declined. Looking after us on each
and every visit. Whilst my mum was only with the home for a matter of months, they all ensured their ethos of 'caring as if family' stayed true. They made sure that Mum was comfortable and cared for, backed up by regular and responsive contact and planning with a local GP surgery and subsequently a district nurse. Whilst the building may not look plush or state-of-the-art, Mum needed a quiet, comfortable space to leave us on her terms and with dignity. That is what Portelet Cottage delivered for her and us - we will be forever grateful.

Where do I start... from the moment my dad arrived until the day he sadly passed away, the staff at Portelet Cottage were like family to him. He had dementia and got confused and frustrated on several occasions, but the staff always made him feel safe and loved. My sister and I live many miles away,
and it was a great comfort to us both knowing he was getting amazing care. We always got weekly updates via phone calls or email informing us of what kind of week he had had. We can not thank the manager and her wonderful team enough for the care and compassion they showed Dad, and they will be forever remembered by both myself and my sister. Thank you once again, Portlet Cottage, for all your love and support.

Thanks to all the staff for looking after our mum so well. She arrived in quite poor health and the home did a great job getting her back to her old self. My brother and I live overseas, so it was a great comfort to know she was safe and on the mend. She’s only just moved to be closer to a family friend
but I’d like to say the staff were always very friendly and welcoming. Thank you everyone.
