I have been at this care home for two weeks today. I have found it a first class home, where every one is friendly and very helpful. The accommodation is very clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The food is excellent wtih plenty of variety. The whole unit is very clean and safe for us
old people. The rooms are very roomy with all facilities are available. Entertainment is plentiful and includes outings etc. The building is excellent and roomy. The weather is to cold at the minute, but too cold to go out. The grounds are superb, and I am looking forward to going outside. I cannot praise it anymore.

In the present economic circumstances where some people are choosing between heating or eating plus the chaos of Storm Chandra, Colbury House is a haven. The building is heated 24 hrs a day. Hot meals, prepared by a cook and delivered by experienced carers 3 times a day. A laundry provides a very efficient
service. Medical assistance is always available at the touch of a button, plus hot beverages are delivered throughout the day. All in all I think that I and all the other residents are in an enviable position. Thank you very much.

The level of care has been of a consistent high standard with medical needs being quickly addressed and met. Regular access to doctor and nursing staff has been reassuring. No activities have been utilised yet but they are available and dad is constantly encouraged to join in. Overall we are very pleased
that we chose this nursing home.

Please could you pass my heartfelt thanks to every1 involved in Mum's care. Compassion & Dignity towards residents and relatives is clearly central to how how the home is run.

One specific afternoon recently we spent a lovely but rare (because of mums illness) time together doing a bit of "knitting"

and "patchwork," then relaxing with a farming tv series which chuckled at, before I read a short bible reading to her and watched an online videoplatform video of an uplifting hymn. I was reminded of the precious times we used to enjoy crafts together at home.

Equally mums bedroom & clothes are immaculate the food delicious and activates team work so hard to include mum which I know is difficult due to mums frailty and medical needs.

I know mum will have good and difficult days, but the care and compassion ALL your staff show mum (and I) every day means the world to me - a huge thank you to everyone at Hayes for your loving kindness, compassion, support and patience towards my beautiful, lovely mum.

Reply from Andrea Kirkby, Registered Manager at Hays House Nursing HomeThank you so much for your continued support. I truly appreciate your comments and ongoing support you show to the staff and home in general.

My dad came in for two weeks respite, but he deteriorated so fast he died after 4 at the Mellows. It was raining when we arrived and we were kept waiting making dad more anxious. Checking him in was chaotic, the senior nurse had too much to juggle and kept forgetting info she needed from dad. I handed
her a piece of paper of dad's needs, which was just thrown on the desk. Office staff were friendly, and dad liked the entertainment lady. But didn't gel with any of the staff looking after him. He needed help eating, but this wasn't given. He was on end of life but I feel his sudden deterioration was due to the care he received. He really hated his time at the home and it saddens me that his last month of his life was so unhappy.
Reply from Balazs Salamon, Home Manager at The Mellowes Care HomeDear Family member

Firstly, please accept our heartfelt condolences on the loss of your father. We understand how difficult this time must be for you and your family, and we are truly sorry that your experience at The Mellows has left you feeling distressed and disappointed. We are deeply saddened to hear that your father did not feel settled or comfortable during his stay with us, and that you felt his needs were not met as they should have been. This is not the experience we want for any of our residents or their families. It is, however, comforting to hear that your father had some positive interactions with our office team and our activities coordinator. We would very much value the opportunity to speak with you directly, to listen further to your experience and to ensure that your concerns are addressed in full. If you feel able, please contact us at a time that suits you.

My wife was admitted to Hays House in mid February. She had dementia and was reasonably immobile. The staff made very welcome, fussed over her, within a couple of weeks she was laughing with them. They did her hair and makeup. She became very articulate and very happy to the day she died in April. I
cannot thank them enough for their kindness and compassion.

I can not recommend Colbury enough. The staff are so lovely and go out of their way to help and make my grandparents stay as comfortable as possible. The food is brilliant. It is always clean. There is always something going on. They make sure their patients are still treated like humans not just ill
people. The residence are always happy when you go in. Glowing reviews all round!

Excellent care for my mother, carers have got to know her and she loves talking to them. Suggestions for activities would be more craft things for Mum as she loves doing craft and painting, decorating biscuits or small cakes. Mum used to love baking.

It was my mom's birthday (5 October). We asked if they could put some tea and coffee in the little side room by Mom's room. Nothing was too much trouble, we had privacy and we bought cake which we left for the staff to have a piece. They asked if we needed anything else. They were very helpful to us
and to our mom. Thank you all.

My father in law was admitted to Hays House from hospital needing full nursing care and help. On arrival he hated the room he had been allocated and another room was immediately found with a beautiful view and on the ground floor. Sadly he was only a resident for two and half months as was expected
but I was so glad he was there, well cared for with respect and a genuine interest in helping him settle in and remain comfortable. I have to admit he was a character and maybe not always easy to look after but they accepted him and the staff and management were very caring and supportive to both of us. I felt relieved he was in the best place for his needs and he said he felt safe and well cared for. Thank you to all the staff for their caring attitude. There was only one occasion when I felt a member of staff could have managed his needs better and I was able to discuss this with management and was confident the issue would be addressed to benefit all. The house is set in beautiful grounds.

The carers are incredibly kind and patient. They take the time to really learn what each resident needs in order to feel at home and truly nurtured. Residents are given a huge range of opportunities to fulfil their interests and hobbies. We have experienced other care settings and this team really are
in a league of their own. We are truly thankful to all at The Mellowes.

My late wife was a nursing care resident at The Mellowes from January 2023 until she passed away in July 2024. At the time she was admitted following hospital discharge, she was quite poorly and weak and not expected to live very long. She was totally immobile and incontinent having been increasingly
ill for a number of years, From the time she arrived until the time of her passing she was afforded efficient and loving care and attention at all times by all grades of staff. In liaison with local NHS healthcare staff, my wife received treatment making her ever more comfortable and feeling welcome and at home in The Mellowes. I know she enjoyed all the care she was given and nothing was too much trouble.
The staff and management at The Mellowes also welcomed my family, friends and me whenever we visited or made enquiries about my wife. I can only thank them for everything they did for her over the one-and-a-half years she was in their care. Thank you so much!

My experience of The Mellowes Care Home was very good. Care for my father was very good, staff helpful, friendly, kind and considerate. My mother who has dementia visited my father every day. She either sat in his room with him or joined in with any activities and the staff were considerate in including
her. Food was lovely, room kept clean and my father's personal hygiene was well taken care of. Office and reception staff were friendly and helpful at all times.
My parents thoroughly enjoyed the pub night with singers for entertainment.

The staff and carers were all very kind to my dad and always kept him clean and tidy. Both my sister and I knew he was always being cared for.
My only negative is - I received the questionnaire with a letter, and on the letter they used a lady's and not my dad's! That is actually awful when you are
grieving, no attention to detail.
