My mother has settled well into Ocean Living since she moved here. The staff have taken the time to get to know her and understand her needs and what she likes. She is happy living here and she knows that her opinions and contributions to life here are respected and acknowledged. She enjoys the food and has made friends amongst the residents. I am grateful for the care and compassion shown to her by the staff.

Ocean Living is a care home, which really does care for all it's residents, their health and well being is paramount, each person in their care is important to all the staff, Teri the manager maintains a standard of care, which can be discribed as 'over and above' that when, looking after her residents and her staff, the latter are kind and caring, respecting the residents needs at all times.

Review of Hawthorn Court from Stephanie M (Sister of Resident) published on 12 May 2026 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

The quality of care is outstanding. Residents are treated with kindness and patience. There are regular celebrations which relatives are welcomed to take part in. The food is excellent. Managers and carers are fully aware of individual needs including medical conditions and carry out advice from medical and other specialists. I always feel welcome there. I can raise concerns with all staff and know they will address them. The Manager and Deputy Manager are always approachable and make time to talk face to face as well as by phone or email. High standards are consistent across the entire team. They strive to make the home comfortable and enjoyable. I was particularly grateful for the understanding and support given to us when we were in the process of adjusting to a loved relative needing residential care. I am confident that my relative is safe and happy in Hawthorn Court.

Awful place!! Mam was always distressed or medicated, sometimes to the point she couldn't open her eyes let alone walk or talk. Hair was left unwashed for weeks. She was rarely in her own clothes, one time I visited we were let in and the carer walked off leaving us, didn't talk to us or tell us where she was. We couldn't find her downstairs so went upstairs and found her half naked lying on her bed crying! There wasn't a single pair of trousers in her wardrobe for me to dress her and only one pair of knickers and when asked staff said they were in the laundry! Bedroom furniture was broken and crammed with bedding. Residents are left watching tv, never saw any sign of engagement/activities. Management never introduced themselves, took 3 months to ask for contact details and were never available to discuss our concerns. We have since moved her , she's happy and well looked after and hasn't been given medication to sedate her at all which makes me question if she ever needed it??

Reply from Teri Edwards, Home Manager at Hawthorn Court

Review of Hawthorn Court from Jean M (Sister-in-law of Resident) published on 22 April 2026 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

Every time we visited she was either distressed, sleeping or zoned out on medication to the point where she couldn't communicate, stand and had wet herself. We know she had challenging behaviorial issues but should have been dealt with appropriately. Her room was always untidy with bedding crammed into broken drawers and wardrobe. She didn't have many clothes at first until we brought some in for her with her name on,they went missing instead she was given items that were too small and stained, when asked always told they were in the laundry. When questioned staff about things very negative about everything. Management never introduced themselves or enquired who we were tried to ring but never available or didn't answer phone. One time she had had her lunch in her room on a child's small plastic plate why we don't know. Her hair hadn't been washed for weeks we washed and cut it ourselves in her room told staff we had done it. We have now moved her to another home.

Mum has been a resident at Ocean Living for over 18 months. We had cared for her at home as long as we could while having to work full time. Mum's dementia deteriorated and we made the difficult decision to find a care home. Ocean Living is a small home and we feel this makes all the difference. All the staff know all the residents. The staff are always helpful, caring and very chatty with Mum, making her feel 'at home'. They are very welcoming whenever we visit. Mum has been on several trips out which she enjoys at the time but her condition means she can't recall them later. Having visited other care homes we are certain that Ocean Living and their staff was the best decision for care we could have made.

From the first visit I paid to this residence, I was treated with the utmost respect and friendliness from all the staff without exception. After meeting the senior staff, I understood why. To be living in a home positioned overlooking the sea and cared for in such a caring way is, I would say, exceptional.

Gazing through my bedroom windows, I realise I've been very fortunate to have found such a lovely place.

My mother has been a resident here for 18 months and the team are fantastic. After a few initial concerns that were rectified quickly, we are very happy with the level of care that my mother is receiving.
The manager particularly goes above and beyond in all areas and is one of the most caring and empathetic people I've ever met. We have total peace of mind that my mother is being cared for and, just as importantly, respected, by all of the team at Hawthorn Court.
The home is flexible on visiting, and during inevitable outbreaks of Covid the safeguarding that's in place installs confidence that the welfare of the residents is of the utmost importance.

Whether it's on the phone or when visiting, there is always someone on hand to speak to or ask questions.

We are very happy with the care my Dad receives at Hawthorn Court, he’s been residing there for 12 months now due to Alzheimer’s.

It’s a small care home so it feels homely and intimate. My dad is very well looked after by all the staff there. They are vigilant when my dad is poorly and keep us informed if there are any concerns. We feel confident he is safe and we are welcome at any time there to see my dad.

Wanted to thank you for looking after my wife’s mother.
She passed away on the 4th of September this year and could not have received better care during her stay there.
The staff could not have been more helpful and caring to both my mother-in-law and our family.

All the staff were great but one member of staff, in particular, guided us through this most difficult time and we shall be forever grateful.

Review of Ocean Living from Nicol W (Brother of Resident) published on 17 June 2022 Submitted via Website

My sister was the youngest resident at Ocean Living, (aged 70), and lived there for quite a few years. She fell at the home and was taken to hospital with three broken toes. She was in the hospital for about five weeks as she had developed complications, which resulted in her passing away on May 28, 2022. The only time Ocean Living have contacted us was to ask us to come and clear her room, not how she was. This was even before she passed away. The home (although told), has not been in touch to offer condolences or sympathy. I do not blame the staff, but I blame the manager as he has shown no 'Duty of Care' as my sister was still a resident. All the manager was concerned about was if the home would be paid for that month as after a few weeks the payments would stop.
I find their attitude disgusting, for a home that is supposed to care for the elderly as their only concern is money-related.

Would I recommend Ocean Living, certainly not.

Reply from Craig Thorburn, Manager at Ocean Living

From the first meeting with the Manager, she listened and understood our father’s needs and empathised. The family felt they could ask anything and she gave us so much of her time. There was flexibility on the selection of a room. We received advice on setting up the room and excellent service from the maintenance man. He was so willing and helpful. The staff welcomed our father and all his children. He was well cared for and the staff were sensitive to his privacy and independence. He enjoyed all the meals and was allowed to choose his seat both in the Dining Room and the Lounge. Excellent communication was maintained with the family, especially with the challenges of Covid. The family were pleased with how quickly our father settled. There was flexibility on visits and we were made to feel comfortable with him. When our father’s health deteriorated, the staff gave their all, managing his care; taking advice from doctors and paramedics; constantly keeping the family informed.
