Overall Experience

My mother in law spent her last few weeks in this care home and we feel that she did not get the care an 87-year-old lady should have received. We understand that due to COVID restrictions this would make it harder to see her but when you are told that we would be able to be with her when the time came it made it easier to except but this was not the case and she died on a Sunday afternoon all on her own. This is just not acceptable as we were not given the chance to say goodbye. When we were allowed to go and see her she was clearly left in her own mess as the smell was horrible and they came running to say they were just about to clean her again. This is not acceptable.

Thank you for your feedback. As you are aware, we have looked into why this happened and there had been some confusion over who was the next of kin as another family member had visited the day before. We apologise again, that we did not call you to advise of your Mothers deteriorating condition....

My father-in-law was only with you for a very short time, during which he was in isolation. The staff cared for him, washed, shaved him, ensured he was calm and facetime calls were arranged. The reception was bright and busy, ready for Christmas. Phones were answered quickly and helpfully. Thank you very much to all at Sidcup Care Home.

I came into The Sidcup in August for respite. I like the home. I have a nice room, the food is good and all staff are very caring and friendly. I would like to become a permanent resident here if my wife can join me too.

Overall Experience
From day one she was left all night unattended (not moved, should have been moved every couple of hours).
Day two medication pushed in her mouth without any attention to care.
A male healthcare assistant attempted to assist with washing her, without asking permission.
For two consecutive days told the hoist was not working so unable to assist with the toilet.
On day one they couldn't be bothered to get a second hoist she was told to poo herself, eventually, after lots of emotional distress and tears, the additional hoist was available three hours later.
On day two she was told "I have just sat down and rolled his eyes in frustration".
Lots of distress caused and feeling of helplessness/uncaring attitude.
My mum has cried on numerous occasions and has often told me "this place will kill me mentally before the cancer kills her physically"
Communication and care are below standards. My mum is the youngest person here and lacks mobility.

She has been spoken to very disrespectfully on numerous occasions. Extremely poor care.

Reply from Alison Horridge, Customer Advisor on behalf of the team at The Sidcup Care Home

Thank you for your feedback. These concerns were addressed immediately and fully by the care home, we also acknowledged and apologised for any issues she may have experienced upon admission. We understand your Mum's condition has now greatly improved and we have been able to arrange visits for you...

Review from S B (Cousin of Resident) published on 23 August 2021 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience
My cousin was admitted here from the hospital for end of life care. I was not informed he had arrived. Only two visitors once a week and had to be booked even for end of life. Covid testing through a window then waiting for thirty mins for results without any protection from our unpredictable weather. The carpet smelt of urine on the first visit. His room was shabby, dirty carpet, torn net curtain, walls and paintwork chipped. Constant phone calls from them to ask if he had received the two covid jabs! Even though he was on end of life care and staff and visitors were tested! Managed to arrange for his wife to visit from another care home, there was nowhere for her to sit or seating offered.
Most of the nursing/care staff and reception were friendly, polite and helpful.

I would not recommend it here to friends or relatives.

Review from T F (Husband of Resident) published on 25 June 2021 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

Was told this care home provided excellent end of life care by hospice, so agreed to my husband being transferred there. Issues from the start, some resolved after settling in period. Three daytime staff were excellent but night staff, mostly agency, were not so good, uncaring and slow to respond when the help buzzer was pressed. I appreciate it is a hard job to care for people on end of life care, but it is their choice to work there.

My mother has been a resident in The Sidcup Care Home for 12-years. She is extremely disabled after suffering a massive stroke. The care she has received was always very good, and during the Covid pandemic, excellent. I had my first visit for a year yesterday, and she was very happy and well. Thank you to all the amazing staff at The Sidcup Care Home.

First time I have been into the rooms as my mother was admitted during the lockdown. The staff are all amazing, friendly and caring. However, I was very disappointed with the room. The carpet is threadbare, two drawers in the wardrobe are broken and unusable. The walls could do with a coat of paint. The chair has seen much better days. Altogether, not a welcoming room, not very happy. Very disappointing.

I have been extremely happy with the care and respect that has been shown to my mum and me. Not being able to see my mum from September 2020 has been difficult for me, but FaceTime and calls that the home has set up have been wonderful. I cannot thank all the staff enough.

My mother is very happy at The Sidcup Care Home. She and I are treated with great kindness. Mum was rather confused recently, however, said: "can I stay here". As Mum is receiving palliative care, I am allowed to visit her in her room. Visiting the care home, I can see the distress to staff and residents not being able to see family and friends. The staff are trying to compensate for the loss residents are feeling.

Our mum has very sadly just passed away. It’s such a hard, sad time for us all and it has been particularly hard through covid. We were kept up to date with Mums well being, and thank god were able to see her before she passed and I was actually with her. The staff were so lovely and caring and were there for me at the time as well as looking after Mum for the last 18-months of her life. We popped into the home whenever we wanted before covid and always felt very welcome and involved. I am very pleased we chose the Sidcup for Mum, and we thank you all very much for Mum's care.
