  • Westgate House Care Centre, Ware
This attractive and professionally managed care home rated Outstanding in ‘Well Led’ by the Care Quality Commission in January 2020, has been supporting the local community of Ware for over fifteen years. Established and purpose-built with a positive reputation, Westgate House Care Centre offers quality nursing, residential, rehabilitation and dementia care in a peaceful but central location.

The long-standing home manager, who has been in post for over five years, leads an effective and stable staff group. This, and exceptional in-house training, ensures a skilled and responsive care team to meet the changing individual needs and expectations of every resident. With a caring and compassionate team, where nothing is too much trouble to help residents settle into their new home, the family ethos and the warm relationships the staff achieve are greatly valued by both residents and visitors.

Westgate House has some highly attractive and charming themed day areas in which to relax or socialise; these include the Garden Café – a firm favourite for those who like to enjoy a coffee and chat with the morning paper, the Cinema room, a Reminiscence room, and Café Pierre. Comfortable bedrooms have their own ensuite toilets and washbasins and the home’s showers and bathrooms are newly refurbished.

There are a number of outdoor spaces including a sensory courtyard for residents to benefit from and a separate garden for spending time with friends and relatives.

The facilities have been designed to enhance resident care and quality of life, to optimise cleanliness and help minimise the spread of any infections; this includes a natural ventilation system, wood effect flooring, hand washing facilities in every room and the use of hand gel dispensers throughout the home.

Everybody is really nice and helpful, they are always keen on helping you even if they are busy or they have other patients assigned. For someone on a wheelchair like me, facilities are really comfortable.

My mother was in Westgate House for 3 weeks.
During this time all members of staff made her feel safe, secure and treated her with dignity at all times.
She received an excellent care package, with an organised routine of physio and exercises in a very professional manner.

I found everyone so helpful while I've been here. Also the therapy group, I found so good at getting me back on my feet. I wish to thank everyone at Westgate for all their care over the time I've been here.
I'll miss everyone.

My 2 weeks at Westgate, first was given advice from 2 friends, having stayed here and there were reports to advice.
The staff have been top class, patient, kind and so helpful.
The food is very good, such choice too. I've added to my weight.
Not having relations, I wish a shop was here but staff
do get few bits I needed. (Thank you)

This relates to my experience of Westgate House in general and not specifically the intermediate care. Overall care, food etc was good. However, suggestions to improve matters: provide some kind of "shop"/trolley to provide necessities for those without family visitors. Make sure water is provided on
a regular basis in rooms and refreshed. Improve the quality of night staff. Have a clearer management of our unit at weekends when residents tend to feel a bit lost and neglected.

Greeted by welcoming staff, bright, modern reception. Our friend was sitting in a bright, cheerful dining room chatting. She showed us her room. Everyone was cheerful and friendly in the corridor. Our friend told us she was extremely pleased with the food and her care, she will be very sad t leave.

I was treated with care and respect and kindness by the nurses, care workers and the physios. There was not anything that was too much trouble. In particular, the physio team were exemplary in getting me to walk with the frame and to extend my mobility and become more independent.

The centre was lovely and clean. Staff were very friendly and helpful. There was always plenty of things going on. Was made very welcome. Some staff went out of their way to help, even down to finding out when my appointment was at the hospital and booking an appointment for me.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.753)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.753) out of 10 for Westgate House Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 76 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 74 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.753 for Westgate House Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (717 Excellents x 5) + (138 Goods x 4) + (36 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 894 Ratings = 4.753
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Westgate House Care Centre is based on 74 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 109 registered maximum number of service users is 21.8, which has been reached with 74 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
