My mother-in-law is treated well. But I think she needs more regular baths, she smells, hair greasy and fingernails always dirty. The home never smells nice and could do with a coat of paint.
Reply from Diane Kerwin, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Barton Brook Care HomeThank you for your review, we value all feedback as this helps us to make improvements where required. The House Manager explained to you your mother-in-law’s nails are kept short by the staff team. The Home Manager visited your mother-in-law on 17 November 2020 and confirmed her nails were lovely and clean. Her hair has grown to shoulder length, it is clean and was tied neatly halfway back in a ponytail. The Home Manager also confirmed your mother-in-law is assisted to bathe two to three times weekly; this is documented in her daily Personal Care Records and your husband is kept fully informed regarding her plan of care. The Home Manager carries out daily walkarounds of the building and confirmed the care home does not smell. Since your last visit, pre-Covid-19 lockdown, the walls had been repainted although it has been identified some walls in the dining area require re-painting due to chairs rubbing against the walls. These areas will be addressed as part of the care home’s ongoing maintenance plan. Once again, thank you for bringing this matter to our attention; we aim to put the wellbeing and safety of our residents at the heart of everything we do.

Since lockdown, Mum's hair has not been cut. I know staff are not allowed but as hair salons are now open and there is a hairdresser on site, I think checking her temperature before visits and giving residents a dry cut would help.
Reply from Diane Kerwin, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Barton Brook Care HomeThank you for your review, we value all feedback as this helps us to make improvements where required. During lockdown, in accordance with Government guidelines, hairdressing was initially deemed as non-essential visiting. However, with robust hairdressing risk assessments in place, the recent changes in Government guidelines are now allowing hairdressing visits. The hairdresser is already booked to visit the care home from 23 November 2020; this was planned in advance with the Home Manager. The hairdresser must follow the Responsible Visitors Code and the Visitors Agreement, which will be completed prior to visiting the home. The House Manager will ensure your Mother is seen by the hairdresser on the day of the planned visit and will keep you fully informed when the visit takes place. Once again, thank you for bringing this matter to our attention; the wellbeing and safety of our residents remain our priority at all times.

Initially, after visiting other care homes we realised that there were no smells in Moss House an indication of overall cleanliness. The residents were not just fixed in a seat for the day but have freedom of movement in pleasant surroundings, even in the garden in suitable weather all in perfect safety.
Every opportunity is taken to stimulate the residents with games, painting etc and special times like Christmas and Birthdays are celebrated. A compassionate staff in these difficult times of Covid-19 have done all in their power to create a homely family atmosphere.

Mum always looks smartly dressed and her hair washed and tidy. She is encouraged to join in group activities and seems to enjoy them. Although I have not been able to see mum due to Covid-19 I know she is safe and kept as well as possible.

My mother-in-law was really struggling at home on her own but since she's moved into Barton Brook, Monton House, she's a lot more settled and a lot less anxious. The staff on Monton House are excellent with her. Very caring and compassionate.

My mum came to Monton House in March 2019 and has been so well cared for with patience, support and dignity. Mum often comments how well looked after she is and enjoys chats and laughs with the staff, who are friendly, polite and professional. Staff communication with us, especially through lockdown
has been brilliant. We have been put at ease with their advice and friendliness and nothing is too much trouble, for which we are extremely grateful. We believe mum is in the best place she could possibly be.

mt mother has been a resident for four months. During this time I have never been inside the home due to COVID-19. It is therefore difficult for me to comment upon certain aspects of Barton Brook. I have seen my mother a few times in the garden and she is always clean and appears to be happy with everything
about the home. The staff I have met during these brief visits are always friendly, caring and knowledgeable about my mum. We phone every day to ask about mother's well-being and are always reassured by kind words of the carers.

Staff are amazing and go the extra mile for you in everything. My mum seems so happy there, and that is a massive part of why she's there. Peace of mind for us as a family to know she's happy. Nothing seems to be a problem, very helpful, easy to talk too. Very happy.

I felt the care my father received was excellent. The staff were caring, attentive and tried everything possible to make my father comfortable and looked after. Although my father sadly passed away, I don't think he could have had better care anywhere else and I am very grateful to all the staff involved.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.293)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.293) out of 10 for Barton Brook Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 33 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 29 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.293 for Barton Brook Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (225 Excellents x 5) + (99 Goods x 4) + (42 Satisfactorys x 3) + (13 Poors x 2) + (14 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 393 Ratings = 4.293
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barton Brook Care Home is based on 29 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 120 registered maximum number of service users is 24, which has been reached with 29 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
