Please mind your loved ones in this home and ensure they are getting adequate attention to cleanliness and hygiene and medical care that they deserve. Sadly I have seen many good staff leave over the last 6 months and now there never seems to be enough staff on duty to cope with the number of residents
in this home. It has been heartbreaking to witness kind staff being overworked and stressed out trying to cope with residents with severe dementia upsetting others as they are all in the same communal room as those with slight dementia.
Over the past 6 months, I have also witnessed the quality of care deteriorate alarmingly whilst more attention has been given to renovating the building.
Staff struggling to multitask by filling out lots of paperwork and files whilst trying to mind residents, not enough cleaners for a residence this size. I have to ask myself are the directors cutting corners to make more money? Where has the "care" to residents and good staff disappeared to?
Reply from Matthew Barbor, Manager at Ashcroft Nursing HomeThe Manager finds your review to be an unfair representation of the Home and a contradiction to the feedback given by your siblings, regarding the care that was delivered to your loved one. The home undertakes a staffing level matrix which is based on our customer's needs and the Home has adequate staffing levels to meet the needs of our customers and this helps us to deliver safe care. The renovations of the building are essential in providing quality care in a safe and well-maintained environment. The renovations do not impact on the quality of care that is delivered at the home and I find these words to be unwarranted. The home regularly seeks feedback from visiting Multidisciplinary professionals, staff, customers and families who have reported positive feedback regarding the quality of care and cleanliness of the environment. Due to confidentiality and data protection, I am open to inviting you to make an appointment to discuss this further and I look forward to speaking to you.

Some staff are excellent, some poor. My mum has a number of issues, advance stage dementia, nursing needs and general old age. The staff/management haven't understood and listened to me and my sister about Mum's diet and her other issues. The room is below standard not completely clean and the furniture
is abysmal. They do not clean my mum as I would like, she has frequently dirty hands, feet from faeces. But Mum seems happy but does need a lot of improvement and staff.
Reply from Matthew Barbor, Manager at Ashcroft Nursing HomeThank you for leaving your comments. Despite having many positive conversations with you and other members of your family regarding your loved one. The home finds your comment “The staff/management haven't understood and listened to me and my sister about Mum's diet and her other issues” unwarranted. The home welcomes input from families to be a part of their loved one's care planning and we endeavour to take on board all the information to help us deliver safe, effective care. You have personally been involved in conversations with the Home and multidisciplinary teams regarding your loved one's care. The Hotel Services staff work very hard and all rooms are cleaned daily.
Due to confidentiality and data protection, I am open to inviting you to make an appointment to discuss this further and I look forward to speaking to you soon.

Fabulous carers and nursing staff, cannot fault the care given to my mum. Management on the other hand not so good, manager not around enough, always outside chatting to workmen. Felt that money should be spent on more carers, always short-staffed and agency workers on-site who do not know my mum. Owner
was very very rude to my mum, unplugging things and moving things around for what he said were health and safety reasons! He needs to take another look. Cleaning was disgraceful, I cleaned my mum's room myself on a weekly basis. Meals were very basic, didn't cater for my mum's disability. I brought in sandwiches from home. I washed most of my mum's clothes and bedding. Maybe not spend money on a massive red hot conservatory but update resident rooms instead, curtains and bedding very dated. I had to buy incontinence pads for my mum as the manager didn't have the right ones. I was asked to buy a harness for the hoist for my mum and we had to buy our own wheelchair as there wasn't one to use.
Reply from Matthew Barbor, Manager at Ashcroft Nursing HomeDear Amanda, the home has a duty of care to ensure that residents, staff and families are protected, and their safety is promoted at all times, especially during times of refurbishment in and around the Home.

In reference to your complaint “Owner was very very rude to my mum unplugging things and moving things around for what he said were health and safety reasons! ” The Manager has instructed all staff to remove any items deemed to be breaching fire safety, infection control or health and safety regulations. The Home has a duty of care to ensure the entire environment is compliant with all regulations and legislation. The health and safety of staff, visitors and customers are paramount. In addition, this type of language is completely unwarranted and therefore in contradiction to the many positive interactions we have had on many occasions. Had you taken the time to raise these concerns directly, this would have given the Manager an opportunity to resolve the issues swiftly.

My father is receiving care and Ashcroft Care (Cleckheaton) has decided that only two people can visit and as he has three daughters, only two can see him, which means I can no longer see my father. This is in complete contravention of present government guidelines (as of 22/8/21). They will not supply
details of their complaints procedure because the nurse on the phone didn’t know what it was, which is illegal under present care home guidelines (CCG). They are the most obstructive people I have ever come across and the place should be shut down. How can any civilised person refuse to let a daughter go see their ill father in respite care as I consider behaviour like this inhuman. The rude and uneducated staff who aren’t aware of the law, their duties, and obligations under that law are so untrained they make it up as they go along. There needs to be a full and thorough investigation into how this place is operated including personal and medical care and full documentation checked!
Reply from Tina Shortall, Registered Manager at Ashcroft Nursing HomeDear Jill
The home has a duty of care to ensure that both residents, staff and families are protected, and their safety is promoted at all times, especially during the Covid19 pandemic. I empathise that the Covid period has been very challenging for all concerned. Our staff have implemented National and Local Government guidelines in the management of the Covid19 pandemic, resulting in positive outcomes for our residents and staff. Your reference in your complaint to “most obstructive people I have ever come across” “place should be shut down” “behaviour like this inhumane” “rude and uneducated staff”. This type of language is completely unwarranted and tantamount to abuse, and therefore in contradiction to the positive feedback, we have received from your siblings involved in your loved one’s care.
Due to confidentiality and data protection, I am open to inviting you to make an appointment to discuss this further and I look forward to speaking to you soon.

Due to Covid restrictions, we were unable to visit Ashcroft prior to Mum's admittance. However, from the moment Mum arrived, her care has been exemplary. Mum has settled in very well, and without exception, every member of the Ashcroft team go out of their way to ensure Mum's care is delivered with
professionalism, kindness and dignity. We only wish Mum had gone straight to Ashcroft when she was discharged from hospital, as since arriving here, her health and strength have improved greatly. We feel this is a direct result of the outstanding care Ashcroft has provided. Thank you all.

It is difficult to put into words how appreciative we all are for the care provided to my mum in the last 18 months of her life. The standard of care provided was exemplary and mum was always treated with dignity and respect. There is a fantastic positive and fun atmosphere when you visit. The staff
are all very caring, friendly, fun and all the residents are clearly happy. Often when I called, one of the staff were sat talking with my mum or doing a crossword or a jigsaw. The conservatory is very bright and airy, a great environment. It is a perfect place to visit and I have enjoyed sitting there with my mum having a chat. The communication from the team was excellent, I could tell always with my thoughts and feelings in mind when they called. Always clear and concise and put things to me in exactly the right way. Something that is really important when it's needed. Much appreciated! I will always recommend Ashcroft when asked. Thank you so much!

My Mother had been in residence at Ashcroft since June 2010 until her death in February 2019. She was quite able in the beginning and the staff respected this, allowing her to be independent as she wished. They coped with her varying 'moods' and adjusted to her needs as she grew older and more
infirm, particular regarding her lack of sight and hearing. I had no worries about her care and safety over the years.

I particularly respected the increased care and sensitivity during the last two weeks of her life and, indeed, at the end - both to her and us.

Thank you, everyone.

My father had spent his life helping others, being able, confident and always a reliable, safe pair of hands, ready to catch anyone who needed it. By the time he reached Ashcroft, he had used so much of his energy dealing with all of the complex issues which accompany an aggressive cancer. The staff
at Ashcroft made us feel welcome as a family, made every effort to identify Dad's needs as specifically as possible and did everything they could to make him comfortable and pain-free in his final days. Housekeeping, care, nursing and management staff were compassionate, friendly and respectful, helping Dad maintain his dignity and composure during his stay. I will be forever grateful for the care shown to my father, mother and my extended family while we were at our most vulnerable. Thank you.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.546)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.546) out of 10 for Ashcroft Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 10 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.796 for Ashcroft Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (92 Excellents x 5) + (19 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 113 Ratings = 4.796
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.75 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ashcroft Nursing Home is based on 10 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 = 3.75
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8, which has been reached with 10 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
